Ok I'm not and Intel or AMD lover, I just like knowing what is coming out whether it is shit or not. The AMD ClawHammer which is going to be called 'Athlon' (XP or a new name?) has been pushed backward acording to AMD. It was originally going to be relesed for the forth quarter, but is now coming out in quarter one of 2003 so it's not that far off. :)
Apple will soon release their new G5 which will be around the 1GHz range and go to aroung 2GHz later. I won't buy one, but it's still interesting.
Intel is making a 0.09 micron P3 probably for the laptop market, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. I think they realised that their customers were buying either P3 or Athlon CPUs instead of P4 or Xeon. Can you blame them when duel P3s rape duel Xeons? (not to mention price :oops: ) The P4 will reach 3.06GHz before years end and have hyperthreading. This is suposed to maintain competition with AMD until the Prescott arrives around midyear, which will also be built on the m478 package but will use a new 'Springdale' chipset (pictured below). I think the Prescott will need a mobo upgrade, however Intel have a habbit of telling people that as a Tualatin runs on a BX and a P4 m478 will run on a 423 (with the right adaptors :wink: ) The Prescott will be built on a 0.09 micron porcess and is said to have a much larger L1 cache around 16kb or 32kb L1 and possibly 1M to 4M of L2 compared to the current 8kb L1 and 512kb L2. It is suposed to be the sucessor to Pentium 4, that may mean it might be called Pentium 5 or possibly a totally different name, I heard a rumor they would after Pentium 4, but that's possibly because the P4 isn't really that impressive. Got to remember though just about every CPU varies in performance for differenent tasks. So you have to choose the right CPU for the right purpose. Celerons/Durons budget desktop machines, Apples G's for desktop publishing, Xeons server apps and P3's for err power user stations, etc
I'm going to wait til those new processors come out and see how they fair with all the different tasks before I go out and get one. Although living in a studio unit with the PC on 24/7, Intel though expensive has been very tempting with their low heat & low noise. I want a good night sleep. Hell I wonder if AMD sometimes have ever spent a dollar on thermal technologies, soon they're going to be bordering on the edge of rapid Si decay temperatures.
Also as I'm sure we all know, AMD and Apple proved that Clock speed isn't everything anymore.

I'm looking at a Pentium III because I underclocked my XP1900 from 1600 to 1200 (100/200fsb) and didn't notice shit all difference. It would be nice to have a CPU that comes with a HS that is more that the CPU really needs. Why the fuck did I sell my P3's :x noooo
I only wish that statement about p4's not needing a heatsink was true P4's come shipped with a heatsink/fan that looks like it belongs on an ahlton, and in my cpu's overclocked state it still hits around 55 degree's under full load Oh well, at least its still cooler than my old celeron. That thing used to hit over 75
OMG what did you do to that poor Celeron?!? It is true, P4 has a throttling system, it may take several minutes to get into word with no HS on a P4, but it will continue to run. Didn't you ever see that Toms Hardware film on it?
Apart from overclocking it from 800 to 1050 and installing it into a poorly designed case with almost no airflow, i didnt do anything. 130Mhz FSB Celeron, oooo yea
I have PC150, used them for my P3 1GHz @ 7.5*151 (1.13GHz). It's guaranteed to do 150MHz @ cas 3, but everyone said it would do 160MHz. I got into windows @ 7.5*160 (1.2GHz) 8)
