Post 17

drevil i am going to assume that you are wrong on this account sorry i did a little research and the only information i could come up with is that reptile experts actually sugest feeding caputed snaked frozen or injured feed suck as mice, rats so they do not injure the captured snake..

Post 22

Yeah... whatever you say....
*eyes go bounce bounce bounce*
ehh..

Post 23

Hands up anyone who knows of Grahame Gow - NT's foremost snake expert - he breeds mice and rats to feed his snakes, and does so publically, so I doubt its illegal. I'd find information backing this up, but quite frankly I can't be bothered :P if your *that* interested in being proven right/wrong/whatever, go ask him.

Post 24

Sper0, I'll have to put you in touch with my brother, his mice are breeding like, well, mice, and he could set you up with a steady stream of fresh snake food indefinately....

Post 25

ppffft its no fun watching a mini snake eating a mini mouse.

my dads snakes are a couple meters long and they eat full grown huge ass rats. its so funky watching them! its like "wholy shit, thems some wide mouths!!"

and he feds the snakes live rats.... the sankes *do* need entertainment y'know! :P

and the girl snake has babies in her tummy so she needs lots of food and exersise too....

so who wants a snake?! :P

Not only that, snakes generally won't eat dead prey. You could, I guess, jiggle around the corpse of a mouse on a thread to get its interest, but mostly they'll only attack and eat something that's actually alive. Most pure predatory animals are like that.

Gotta be careful with rats, though. A guy I knew got his carpet python killed by a rat, when he dropped the rat in and walked off to do something else. Guess sometimes even the hunter becomes the hunted :P

Darkwolf.

Post 27

It takes a special digestive system to eat carrion, or special preparation of the food.

Post 28

yeah when the snakes were babys one of the mice gashed it while it was fighting for dear life... the snake ultimatley won, but the mouse got its bit... i think it still has that scar.

fuck that i would be too scared of getting my finger or arm bite off

Post 30

wimp!

... um, yeah i wouldnt stick my hand in the cage either..... my dads are pythons so they bite but dont poison.

Post 31

im training my snake to bite on sight

little pain never hurt anyone.

Post 32

At least not much.

Post 33

Quote from Lilu:

umm. yeah.. how much? what sort are they ? where n how much for a tank? permits?

Post 34

yeah I'm interested as well, for a mate.

Snakes generally DO eat dead mice. Some stores recommend you feed CERTAIN breeds of snakes dead mice as live ones can actually hurt the snake while they are trying to eat it. My mates snake is fed once a week 1 frozen rat (defrosted) and they just dangle it in front of it's face with tongs and it normally goes the sucker

Post 35

well i know my dad paid $500 each for his. thats with licences and all that.... licences are pretty pricey i think.....

um.. okay so i dont know all the details........ i'll talk to my dad and post propper stuff later, woo, okay done.

Pain doesn't harm you, it just lets you know you're being harmed.

Consider too the size diference, unless the snake has nowhere to go, it won't bite you - it certainly can't eat you, so why waste time and effort antagonising something that, from its perspective, might look at a snake as lunch :P

Post 39

WoW what a retarded thread...

Firstly it ISN'T illegal to feed live animals to other live animals in Oz.
It is illegal in the states.

But it IS extremely cruel.

It is actually very cruel in this case, to both the snake and the mouse.
THe snake has no opportunity to actually be a predator and the mouse has nowhere to run.

Snakes DO fret if there aren't hungry and a mouse is running around them, it stresses them out

And well picture yourself as a mouse running around an enclosed space-tank with a snake there too.

I've had carpet pythons for nearly 5 years before I gave them away, Diamond was over 2 metres long at the end.

Snakes DO eat frozen or dead rats, you do have to wave them around a bit to attract the snake but it makes no difference to the snake.
In fact it's better as someone pointed out above because it reduces risk of injury to the snake.

Snakes CANNOT be trained to bite people :) Not specifically anyway.

Snakes are great pets, not too cuddly but their uniqueness makes them interesting.
It actually pisses me off that people have snakes and have NO idea how to care for them.

Like I said earlier feeding them live animals is cruel, unnecessary and the sort of thing 10 year old boys do.

Grow up to whoever thinks this kind of thing is 'cool'
I hope you karmically come back as a mouse one day.

Post 40

As an addition the only time I would consider feeding live animals to a snake would be if both animals lived in a room or a very large tank.

So it would take the snake several days to find or hunt the mouse to eat it.

Remember snakes aren't like cats.
Snakes derive no pleasure at all from killing or hunting, it's merely food for them, they honestly don't care whether it's alive or dead, if it smells like food and attracts them they will eat it.

Post 41

Are snakes or mice even self-aware?

Post 42

In what sense Aravi??

They are aware in some respects but do not refer to their world in the narrative like we do.

But then again they are creatures of the natural world, something humans left a long time ago.

*shrug* Diamond 'seemed' intelligent at times but whether that was just pattern awareness from years with me etc i'm still not sure.

I'm sure Spero's snake 'reacts' different to her than other people, but whether that's an indication of an awareness of an individual or a smell/vibration that the snake now equates with food I never worked out.

Mice can be incredibly intelligent believe it or not, they can learn tricks, respond to stimuli, recognise verbal and visual input .

More than most humans I reckon :) :)

Post 43

By self-aware I simply mean knowing that I exist.

Compare with a computer, which (unless I'm mistaken) does not know that it exists.

Post 44

That's a much more complicated question.

They DO have a sense of individuality , how much tho I don't know - never actually being a mouse that I could remember :)

I would have to say Yes but I couldn't prove it, just my view on the matter.

Lately i've become to belive that the actual act of 'playing' with other members of your species indicates a good level of awareness.
It indicates that an animal is aware of others of its species and assumes they are the same as it and will do thae same sort of things.

Birds, cats, dogs, mice hell even some types of shrimp actually play with each other.

Aha but Computers play with each other....don't they?? :)

Post 45

Quote from Aravi D'teron:

Snakes are very self aware - when Lilu's father's female snake got pregnant, she would become very agitated whenever the male got too close to her. That's a fairly strong indication that not only was she aware of her condition, but also aware of what he might do to the young. Its likely an instinctive action, but it still shows a great deal of awareness, as well as a certain degree of intelligence.

Post 46

Heh, some humans are more aware of themselves than others. So with animals its more a sliding scale.

Post 47

Snakes eat mice in the wild.

The mouse was put in the cage it ran, sure the mouse had no chance but who gives a shit .. not me. It was a stupid little baby mouse bred especially for death. Cruel parhaps but then eating meat can also be classed as cruel. DO the cows have a chance to run before they are slaughtered to our mindless needs. No they dont, so why should a mouse be different.

Unless your a mouse lover?

Plus my snake loves its mice and will eat several a day if i let it. But i dont i feed it once a week and its never refused a meal yet.

Did you just contradict yourself or am i seeing things?

Seriously, the mouse suffers little pain at all its dead in a few seconds. Its a creation of the circle of life. Just because the mouse was doomed from the start means nothing. Whats the difference between freezin a mouse and killing it and let the snake kill it?

Post 48

the diference is the snake isn't injured if the mouse gets in a lucky hit.

*shrug* me personally, I don't think feeding live mice to a snake is wrong, but feeding the snake in its own cage is risky, the scent of the mouse will be in the cage the whole time, so theres a chance the snake will strike at anything that moves in the cage - ie a hand or something.

Lilu's father takes them out and puts them in a plastic box to feed them - it also saves on having to clean out his snake cages :P
