q3 and cs yes.
BF 42 seperate machine.
And system needs to be the best that you can get. Athlon XP 2200 DDR ram etc etc etc..

Im not sure what you would need to run a Q3 server but for CS you won't need much more than say a celeron 700 with say about 512 MB SDRAM.
Around version 1.0 time a friend ran a 20 or so player server on something like a cele 500 and probably less ram, so considering CS seems to be bloatware it would suit that you would need a slightly better system. Afterall your only running it as a console server, unless you want to play at the same time, then you'll want a better comp

I ran CS 1.5 on a PIII 450 320mb ram no probs. Course, it ran it on a very stripped down version of Linux. But it ran sweet.

'sif one of these wouldn't make a schweet gameserver Sun LX50

Yep it'd run multiple servers easy :)
Anyways, Knight you need crap all for a game server based on HL but i'd guess BF1942 would require a rather high end comp and i have no idea for Q3

We used to run a dedicated server for around 20 people CS Beta 7 on a Pentium 166. Now CS is more fucked up (no not better) it needs something slightly better
BF it depends on if or how many bots you want. If bots then get somthing hardcore, if not then anything around 1GHz will do (except a C3 :D ).
Are you planning on playing on this server at the same time or will it be completely dedicated?

bf1942 requirements
very hungry game that
Threw you the obvious
And you flew with it on your back
A name in your recollection
Down among a million, say:
Difficult enough to feel a little bit
Disappointed, passed over.
When I've looked right through,
To see you naked and oblivious
and you don't see me
Well I threw you the obvious,
Just to see if there's more behind the
Eyes of a fallen angel,
Eyes of a tragedy.
Here I am expecting just a little bit
Too much from the wounded
But I see,
See through it all,
See through,
And see you.
So I threw you the obvious
Do you see what occurs behind the
Eyes of a fallen angel
Eyes of a tragedy
Well, oh well..
Apparently nothing.
Apparently nothing at all

will be completely dedicated
Post 10
Yep, then it shouldnt need much for CS, but Q3 will probably need a bit more than CS and BF will need a completely seperate comp thats on par with a really hardcore gaming comp but you wont need an uber graphics card though cos it wouldnt be required for serving :)
Post 11
Yeah a GF2MX or Voodoo4 will do for either a server or game machine. It just depends on the CPU depending on which you plan to do.
Post 12
Let alone an onboard video card would be fine.
Post 13
Hell a Trident 1MB card would probably do
Post 14
Or how about NOT.
Post 15
do you need a video card that runs BF to run a dedicated?
Post 16
The lan server I am in the process of setting up is designed for 32 player CS, T1&2, UT2k3 and bf1942.
1800+
512 ram
SCSI HD
DEC net card
TNT2 video card.
And thats it.
I found running 32 players @ Evo 1 was maxing out a 1100 cpu. Like it was hitting high 90's in CPU usage.
Also the more players the higher the cpu usage, its almost logarithmic in its usage.
bf1942 if HUNGRY for network usage and ram, cpu, U damn well name it.. It wants it all..
Edit: Timmy.. No dedicated servers run from command prompt ( think DOS ).
So if it can display white text on black, thats all it needs.
Post 17
The only reason you need a video card is to get past bios....

Yes, but some people get scared about the idea of using telnet/ssh and a command prompt to start the server.
You're a pansy if you fear a command prompt, but that doesn't stop many, many people from fearing it.

did it occur to you that some ppl just dont know how?
nothing to be scared off.
as for bf1942, a pentium 3 1.2 gig with 512 meg does well. thats what the bm-server runs.
Post 20
The more CPU and RAM you have the better it will run,
if you want to host CS + BF + Q3 + UT2K3 = lots of it.
DGA server has a XP 2100 with 1gb DDR RAM, and it was chugging a bit with 30 people on BF and CS server full 20 people, and some leeching (so i took off file and print sharing) then it ran fine.
Post 21
the bm-server could have taken some of that load if it wasnt for a bad ram stick.... *furious at the ram gods*
Post 22
lol you looking at running a server farm for your wireless AP?
id contribute for something like that, but truthfully, bf1942, while a good game, isnt worth the hassle over mohaa imo. buggy, demanding....
Post 23
ive had 12 ppl playing bf1942 on my p3500 server and it did not miss a beat. the only thing i noticed is that cpu usage was at 100% all the time, even when no one was playing. america's army was using 0% when no one was playing, i think the battle field server needs some tweaking

*cough* Natural Selection *cough*
Uses more CPU than a 32 player BF1942 server. I think the turrets scanning kill the CPU.
