[Attachment 8445]It has been almost 12 years since StarCraft, and the Blizzard hype machine has been in full swing since the announcement of its sequel, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, at BlizzCon all those years ago. Well the Hyperion has finally landed, and we've spent the last week hammering away at the single player campaign.

Forgoing sleep - and the glory of multiplayer combat - I played through the campaign from start to finish, and then (heroically) went back for more, exploring all the optional and alternative content. Does it live up to the hype? Has the long, long wait been worth it? In short, yes. Yes it has.

I am a child of the 8-bit era, and have long held the belief that graphics do not make a game. SC2 has taught me just how wrong I was.

<div style="color:white; font-size:24px; text-align:left; float:left; width:250px; padding:20px;line-height:1.2;"><cufon2>"Does it live up to the hype? Has the long, long wait been worth it? In short, yes. Yes it has. "</cufon2></div> While the actual game play graphics are not exactly ground breaking, the creative use of lighting, and the wonderfully rich background imagery all come together to make a very well rounded experience that adds just the right amount of atmosphere - without requiring a water cooled super computer to play it.

But the game play graphics are only part of the picture where the campaign is concerned. The campaign is made by cut scenes and the campaign management interface, which is an explorable environment loosely in the style of old point-and-click adventures.

The cut scenes are everything I have come to expect from Blizzard, and more. While most of the cut scenes are shot using the 3D engine of the campaign management environment, they are so polished that they rank among the best I have seen in the last few years.

[Attachment 7297]And then there are the pre-rendered cut scenes. Few and far between, but truly stunning. For a great example of the cinematics - without spoilers - check out the Ghosts of the Past trailer, which is a mash up of many of the in game cut scenes, both pre-rendered and otherwise.

Like the original, StarCraft 2 is a very well balanced RTS, with every unit having a counter, and both strong defensive and offensive play. But let's be honest, if you have played an RTS in the last 10 years, you pretty much know what you are in for - particularly if you played the original.

So rather than focus on the core elements of the game play, I am instead going to focus on those that add to the playability of the campaign.

Many RTS campaigns are quite dry. You build up your army and base until you are powerful enough to destroy your enemy's base. Sometimes you get the odd covert mission thrown in, but it's nothing special. SC2 tries to mix it up a bit, and (frankly) to my surprise succeeds in make each mission feel different to the last. Rather than just grinding through the missions to unlock the cinematics - like I find myself doing in most RTS campaigns - I actually found myself enjoying the challenges each mission presented.

To add a bit more spice and re-playability to the campaign, there are three interesting side features:

Unlockable Units: Through out the campaign you will have a choice of missions available to play. Each mission will generally unlock a new unit. This introduces a bit of choice and strategy at the campaign level: should I do this mission without that unit? Or should I unlock that unit first?

Mercenaries & Unit Upgrades: Each mission will also earn you credits that you can spend on unit upgrades and even on mercenaries - limited use, extremely powerful units. You will not earn enough credits during the campaign to buy every upgrade, so once again it adds some choice at the campaign level.

Technology Research: During most missions there will be optional objectives that if completed will grant you research points. There are two types of research points, Protoss and Zerg, that correspond to two tech trees. Every 5 points you earn on a tree you will be able to choose one of two upgrades. Do you want to unlock the Planetary Fortress or the ability to build flame throwing turrets? Once again - well you get the picture - choice, choice, choice!

I could rant for hours about how wonderful I found the story, the cinematics, and what awesome work Blizzard has done in all the right places - instead I will try keep it simple.

[Attachment 7298]The cinematics are very well done, and a satisfying reward to completing a mission. The story is enhanced by excellent characters, wonderful voice acting, and a nice mix of humor, drama, and outright corniness.

I found the missions themselves pleasantly challenging. They took me right to the edge of swearing and keyboard smashing, but didn't push me over.

I did have issues with the patcher flooding my poor little cheap modem to death, but that was the only serious bug I ran in to. The actual game play was very polished, and apart from a few Battle.Net hiccups effecting the achievements system, I ran in to no unnecessary frustrations once I was in the game and playing.

It falls no shorter than being one of the greatest RTS games of all time.</div></div>

i found the ending cinematic a bit meh to be honest. it was pretty and wrapped a few points up, and yes im aware of the other installments to come, i just felt it needed a bit more to it than a single point to it, that said i loved the game and it pretty much consumed my life till the end of it. one last thing there were i think 2 missions in there near identicle to some in the original.

my 2 cents

Post 3

The final cinematic is probably my only gripe with the game. Not because it was bad, just because "damn you Blizzard for making me wait for the next chapter!"

Are game reviews going to be a regular feature of the site now?

It was easy to put the multiplayer down for a bit since I got into the beta through the gamestop preorder. If you have the game and have not played the campaign, you really should tear into it. It's extremely well done, very challenging on the hard and brutal levels (I'm not looking forward to hitting All In again on brutal), and the production values and story were A-plus all around. The achievements add a new level of spice to the game, and really help to showcase certain strategies or unit strengths that you must apply if you are to succeed.

To give you an idea of the achievements, I've completed the campaign on hard, and especially early on, I did my best to hit the achievements that I could, though some of the 'achieve x on normal' are rather difficult on the hard setting. Even doing that, I'm only at a 51% completion rate for the game (normal completion achievements are covered from higher difficulty levels as in most games), and I'm 6 missions in to Brutal, managing to hit a couple achievements I've missed already. Simply playing through the missions themselves provides for a varied and entertaining experience, but working towards the achievements really adds an additional layer to the game, as do the choices you have to make at a few key points.

Playing for two months in the beta, I've definitely gotten a taste for the competitive play, but the campaign was so enjoyable, that immediately upon finishing it, I started back in on brutal. The one complaint I have is a somewhat minor one related to story. There is some urgency suggested once you complete a set of missions, but if you should follow through with that urgency, you could potentially (I didn't try, so I'm not sure) lock yourself out of some missions on the first playthrough. Even without that, it's a bit jarring as characters go from focusing urgency on one separate thread, even to the point of dissension in the ranks, to jumping to the other. The story isn't 100% cohesive because of that, but that is really the games only flaw. And if you don't get to the Breakout mission and crack a smile...well, you must not have ever played Warcraft 3.

The Campaign is amazing was worth the wait to be honest, just the way they did the in-game story was great and really helped my mate understand what was happening in the StarCraft universe. The last missions on the Planet Char homeworld of the Zerg from the Brood Wars has some great action packed missions, where it felt like you where stuck on the planet and had nothing that could help you, you just had to stick it out and keep pushing forward.

After completing the missions i am still not bored with the Campaign as i am focusing on the Achievements to build up those personal points and bragging rights ^_^.
Well done blizzard i say, will be hitting multiplayer alot more often and to see how high a League i can make it too.

I love the fact that even during the install process you're being explained the back-story with images and a simple narrative. It's perfect for newcomers, of which there are millions, looking at the sales figures.

I do think the next two chapters will be 12 and 24 months away respectively, though.

Yes i agree with you rec, with the release of the expansion packs i used to play World of Warcraft since Beta so about 5years play (hangs head in shame) and if i have learned anything from the way Blizzard are with expansion packs they usually wait a whole year before releasing another one, unless they have already had the expansion story already on the white boards during the creation of Starcraft 2 witch i doubt because they said it them selves that SCII took them a long time to create due to the Lengthy story line they wanted to implement into the game to get players glued to there screens.

I am hopeful though but for now enjoy the game that is out now smash those achievements and hopefully one of you guys will Taste the Pro League in Multiplayer.

Post 10

that just suggests to me that the game content took a long time to develop to match the storyline. I'd be really surprised if they didnt already have the vast majority of the protoss and zerg storys locked down.

I am glad they gave it a 9.5 out 10. Makes my 98 out of 100 seem less fanboish...

I have to say, the ending of the campaign is absolutely fucking lame ass. i really enjoyed the campain, but seriously the ending was terrible. more than terrible on blizzards standards. it could have been so awesome too. really dissapointed. so my advice is play right up untill the finish the last mission and quit straight away.

Post 16

lol it wasnt THAT bad.. except that Jim wasted the bullet meant for Mengsk ;P

Post 18

way to spoil it lothar!

Post 19

My bad... Is that better now?

Post 20

[hide="lol"]are you telling me the whole build up for the artifact, the massive amount of energy that was going to realeased and literally obliterate an entire planets worth of zerg, and it was a few in game explosions and thats it. like are you kidding me? and then the obvious betrayal and by one of the only entertaining characters(cept maybe tosh and zeratul) in the storyline, and he walks into the sunset after saving her. when in the first game she was beyond saving. her dna was actually spliced the zerg DNA making her a hybrid. but no a magic artifact saves the day. they are pulling a wow and changing shit to suit their new vision. and it stinks. not to mention the fact that she was the main villain[/hide] sigh

Post 21

[hide=yup]
yeah i would've liked more/better cutscenes - but i have no issue with her shit being undone - figured if she stayed the main badguy throughout it would start to get a bit same-old same-old - re: superman movies and lex luthor.

also, how awesome is Tosh - did anyone pick the cute ghost over the brooding awesome scifi voodoo man? =) [/hide]

Post 22

[hide=mhmm]You can go back through the missions and do both the ghost and the spectre sides of things. Loved it.

Then again re keregan I have not played the original campaings (or mearly cant remember them) but it would suck to be her regardless.[/hide]

I was looking at your profile herry and nice achievements dude on the campaign.

Does anyone know where some of the cut scenes went in the game.. in the previews and trailer there are short clips of zeratul fighting someone (kerrigan prolly) a banshee flying in an industrial area, a Hydralisk getting a plasma burts thru its chest and then an army of marines in what looks like a nuclear wasteland... but none of those you see in the actual game, could they be clips from larger cinematics that are to appear in the next two expansions? hmmm anywho! if someone knows or has an opinion, help a brother out.. add me on SCII, names' HellRazor.

Post 27

I watched the trailer again just now, and the only part I didn't recognise from in game was the banshee flying through a city/industrial area.

All the rest are from the game, though it can be a little misleading, as the trailer has post production on it, so they might not be full on cut scenes in game, just part of the mission hub cut scenes (the marines in the nuclear wasteland you describe are part of the mission hub cut scenes on Char).

Zeratul fighting Kerrigan is definitely a full on cut scene in the game. At some point Zeratul will appear and give you a device which ends up in your lab. If you click on this device you get that cut scene, and some missions.

The reason you might not have seen some of the others is that some are the result of choices. There are at least 3 choice missions in the game, and at least 2 of these result in an alternative cut scene depending on the choice (a mission hub level cut scene). You can go back and replay all the cut scenes and choices when you finish.
