I wanna see if I can set up Red Hat 8.0 on my winXP box, wanna duel boot it, then set up wineX, my net connection, icq, msn, the works, get my games running, mainly Half life, i'll keep XP for my other games, if I need a hand dude can I call on you?

but yeha if u have it all set up by the weekend i wouldnt mind having a look at how the games run on it and shit

well i installed suse, then mandrake on my laptop yesterday cos i got bored.
both times, they couldnt work out what modem i had. Both times they couldnt work out what pcmcia card i had.
Both times they totally fucked up when i changed the mouse around, at least mandrake made the wheel work.
Unplug a usb device, and plug it back in, and it didnt detect. It also couldnt detect my digital camera.

Well seeing people here turning to Linux, and other people i know telling me all about it, i think i might give it a try.
I'm currently running windows XP, and it seems you can dual boot?
I've got a few questions:
1) seems i can download Linux no? If so, which ones would u recommend a new person like me, where from? Oh and how big are the files, keeping in mind i'm on 56k
2) to install it, do i need to reinstall XP, and install linux first off?
3) Is it user friendly? What i mean by this, can i use my microsoft office, winamp, CS and the like in Linux, and can i access my files off my HDD in it?

Well, I've always been a Mandrake user, and I must say I find Mandrake 9 to be quite nice. SuSE 8.1, although I haven't used it myself has received some rave reviews regarding its user friendliness.
RedHat is considered to be a server distro, although they to are working towards ease of use.
Users of Debian will talk about the powerful apt-get package management system and tell you how it is far superior to RPM. It may be tougher to use than some of the other distros (unsure on this) but has a strong community surrounding it, so help would be easy to get on the mailing lists.
All comes down to personal preference
BTW: WolfSpirit is down in Canberra, I beleive he has a set of Mandrake 9 CDs.

You'd need a free partition to install Linux onto, but that is all

MS Office could be made to run with Wine (CodeWeavers Crossover Office does this), although IMO OpenOffice is a better tool (www.openoffice.org).
XMMS is almost identical to Winamp, Noatun supports the use of a Winamp interface (also able to use K-Jofol and Kaiman skins)
Half-life and mods run well under Wine and WineX (WineX is needed for online play though, otherwise VAC will think you're cheating)
Linux will be able to access, read and write to all FAT/FAT32 formatted partitions. NTFS support is also there (if compiled into your kernel) although write support is currently experimental should only be touched by the kernel developers)
