Old instruments nothing, the shuttle just had 100 various components recently upgraded, has been overhauled three times and the shuttle has always upgraded and refitted - age make no difference
About 30 secs ago the news said apparrently some insulation hose or something, broke off and hit the left wing during acent.
Then they burnt up on the way down....not good :shock:

This is a moment in history, ladies and gentlemen. Just as Challenger proved to be the first 'should we?' for space travel, this is going to be another one. Fortunately, Bush has said that space travel will go on... but NASA has lost two of it's five space shuttles; that's going to put a damper on things.
The only good thing I can see about this accident is that, out of the ashes of the Space Shuttles, may rise something truely amazing. A completely reusable shuttle, which does not require any disposable externalities. Reliable, cheap, and environmentally friendly.
The Space Shuttles are old. True, they underwent the strictest of all maintainance, but the airframes and all were old. Above all else, the technology is old. It's time for something new, more reliable, cheaper and easier.
After all, it's what the Astronaughts would have wanted.

Somewhere along the lines that spider's silk is one of the strongest fibres in the world. Only problem just happens to be that the spiders spin their webs up so damn well you can't really utilise the webs.

I'd say its all about seeing how versitle it could be. They have already worked out they can make bullet-proof vests from it, but they need so much spider web that its too mipractical atm. They are however looking into synthetic production of it. That may be what they are attempting to work out in space

Like Martok said, to try and synthesise the material. With any space mission weight is a lot of trouble. Spider's silk is incredibly light yet goddamn strong.

All seven were on board....
I think the people at (Monash?) as they said on the today show or seven sunrise, i forgot which one, were watching how the spiders construct their webs in 0 grav so as to determine new construction methods for future space stations or space constructions (i think)
THe spiders were also sent up because they needed to investigate how they reacted to their enviroment; apparently when the US sends a mission to mars, they will have a fully functional green house, the green house needs plants and insects, and predetors. The spiders are being considered to be that predetor.

They new that something hit the wing when it went up. It was a educated guess that the space craft was ok.
They were very bloody wrong.
Someone is going to get into a shitload of trouble.
They said they had nobody trained onboard to do a eva to inspect the damage.
NASA will learn from this disaster and come back from it stronger and wiser.
Some boffin from NASA said that the space craft was only half way through it designed lifespan. Jesus talk about value for thier money getting over 40 years out of shuttle,
Most people do not even own cars over 10years old now days. They can upgrade the thing as many times as they like it is still going to be a old design, after flying the things for so long one would think that NASA should get the funding to replace the old workhorses with something a little more modern.
It does not make sense the international space station is dependant on shuttle flights, they should have put some of that money into a new designed shuttle before they got to carried away with it. No space shuttle = no more international space station.
Typical capatilst american government to tight to spend the money on a new shuttle but a willing to spend millions of dollars on cruise missles to send into baghdad to blow up some poor bastards falafel stand.

The reason why this is worse, is because of its nature. The astronauts managed to fly into space, do their work, then on their way home, they died. the fact also is, that these people were on live TV, and are respected and admired for what they do.

They do a lot of experiments out there, granted the experiments they do up there are all pretty much ground-breaking as they do all of them in a nearly zero gravity environment. Which obviously can't be done here on earth save for the secret US military installations with anti-gravity technology derived from alien spacecrafts like the one they saw from a shuttle in the last 10 years or so.
