Dual Processor Motherboard

I'm interested in purchasing a dual processor motherboard; socket 478. Must support celerons in both slots, fit in standard case, and be reasonably priced (not over $400). Anyone know of any good ones?

Also you won't get one that supports celeron's, only celeron to support dual processor was the mendichino core

May i ask why you would like to get Dual Processor?

1 good CPU is better than 2 average cpu in SOOOOOOOOOOO many ways :)

True, 2 CPUs won't achieve the same performance as 1 CPU with twice the power.

It'll provide no real benefit in apps that can't take advantage of it (although the OS may be able to run different apps on different threads).

But, CPU intensive applications that know how to use multiple processors will benefit from having multiple processors (and while a 3GHz P4 costs over "100, two 2.4GHz P4s cost in total about $720 and will provide more performance in these situations).

Really a question of "can what I want to run take advantage of multiple CPUs".

It would be worth having two CPU's for lans, cos then you can run a dedicated server for a game using one CPU and then join the game using the other CPU. But since dual CPU's only work for Pentiums and not Celerons it doesn't matter :)

You can always go dual socket A. Durons will work in a dual configuration.

Two CPUs at speed X can be faster than a single CPU at speed 2X depending on what you're doing. For one app, even a multithreaded one you will probably see a benifit in favour of the single CPU but it won't be significant. For multiple applications you actually might see the dual out-perform a single CPU. Keep in mind there is a performance hit every time you have to switch context. If the single CPU is constantly and rapidly switching back and forth between the OS and each of the apps it might actually get less work done in the same space of time that the dual setup did - especially if you can manually define CPU affinity for the multiple processes.

Its a matter of finding the right tool for the situation.

Every one of you missed the important thing here! Although Martok said you can't run Smellerons in SMP, there was one thing overlooked. DUAL SOCKET 478 (P4) MOTHERBOARDs SIMPLY DON'T EXIST! :shock:

You'll be suprised what dual PIII 1.4Ghz Tualatin can do. I have a Linux box running with this configuration, and for running CS, BF1942 servers etc, it easily out performs my P4 2.4Ghz. Sure, OS overhead doesn't help in XP - and games won't benefit (although I hear rumours Qauke3 supports dual CPUs). It comes down to what you want to do.

For SMP aware programs, say the DNETC client, I can process roughly 3,732,448 keys/sec on the P4. The Linux box pumps out about 6,342,637 keys/sec.

On non SMP aware programs, say the SETI client, the P4 knocks out a unit every 4 hours. The dual does the same.

Oh, and get the CPUs with the 512k cache :)

I agree the Pentium III-S with 512 is sweet. At 1.4GHz it puts out 31.2 watts of heat 8) to put that into perspective the Pentium 4 3.06GHz is 80 watts.
You can find them in 1.13, 1.266 and 1.4GHz. There is also a 256kb L2 cache non-smp model that are available in 1.13 and 1.2GHz. I have a Celeron Tualatin 1.3GHz which has a fsb of 100, no hardware data prefetch (unlike the Pentium) and I am surprised at what that little thing can do.

The only problem with these CPUs is you have to be careful of the mobo your going to use. The VIA mobos speek for themselves and the i815 is limited to 512mb. Thats fine for some, but some head room would be nice. BX is really good for the Celerons and only for the Pentiums if your using a PCI vidcard. The i820 and i840 are the best for these CPUs. For those who don't know they are RDram boards. Its still a little expansive, but RDrams performance jumps quite a lot with more L2 cache and they officially support 133fsb, have 4xAGP and a higher data transfer from the southbridge to northbridge and northbridge to CPU. And besides Slot 1 is so easy to work with.
