i got a few more n00b questions
whats a filter and what it do?
is it nessary
and this
i have a phone lline in my dinning room where our gateway (dads pc) is connected to oz dialup and than its pluged into my 10/100 switch than cables go to my room brothers and so on
so what would be the best thing for me to do when i get dsl get a modem router?
if so what one
cause i know the netcom only has one cat5 port and thats no good to me :P
Yeah ya need a filter for the line adsl is connected to. It splits up the singles so you can use your phone/internet(adsl) on the same line.
Get a Billion adsl modem, I haven't heard anything bad about em yet. Their routers, so ya can share ya net over your home lan.

Filters - You need these. They separate the DSL signal along the telephone line. Which if you didn't have you would get great interference when you pick up the telephone while the DSL modem is plugged in.
Yep get the Billion modems. See the OCAU review for an idea of what it can do and features. Other than being it being Telstra certified too. Get if from Maitec

how big is a filter and where do i phisically plug it ?
Filters are about the size of a match box. You don't need one unless you want to run a phone off the same line. You will plug the cable from the wall into the filter and then the phone into the other end of the filter.

No filter for the modem. That'll be just mean the DSL Modem won't be even able to talk out to the world.
Unless it's a normal dialup modem in that case yeah it'd need a filter.

The filter works by removing the high frequencies ADSL signal from the line before they reach the phone. If you put a filter on the line before the ADSL modem your modem won't be able to hear its carrier signal so it won't work :)
Most wall-mount phones can come off the wall.. failing that, you can get Telstra to install a filter in the distribution frame on the side of your house but it might cost you. Or if you are feeling brave you could always climb up into your roof, find the cable, cut it and terminate it then whack a filter in there ;)

Mind you typically this being the cheapest and fastest option available. However if you screw up there isnt' any insurance on your health after your parents find out.
