Well, I can't justify the cost of ADSL just yet, and I have to do something coz we have one fone line jammed with phone calls and me trying to get on the net!

I figured another line would be the only option, but when I rang telstra they were pushing ISDN as an option - saying that it works out cheaper than a new line.

Trouble is, I don't trust Telstra to tell the whole truth, A new line is $209 to install and atm I'm trying to track down some ISDN prices - I went to whirlpool.net and in one of the forums it mentioned that download speeds are shithouse at 128 kbps and it costs 30c per call and that is time limited to an hour.

It is sounding more like a shitty deal all the time, but $80 per month for adsl, who can afford that?

bloody hell. Has anyone got any experience of ISDN?

My example..

I have a isdn dov modem.

It cost $99 for the isdn instal, which gives U 2 lines.

Hook up the dov card thru IPCOP ( U can look everything up on google later )

Most ISPs run dov as a dial up plan..

I have $24.95 a month, permanent connection, no DL costs/caps..

So I can DL truckloads, no cap..

Its 64K/64K So that caps out at about 9K a sec DL

And I get a ping of 40 on internode ( for example ).

So to recap, $25 a month, all-U-can-eat, with a 40 ping.
And node isnt my ISP btw either. My ISp doesnt have any active servers ATM,, but to them Id get a LAN ping..

Also with the 2 phone numbers, if U are on the net, and a call comes in to either of em, it will switch the connection to the net, to the other line.. So if U have it on line B, and someone rings it, the modem will switch the data to line A, and the phone rings..

I used to DL a avi a month, and guarantee it, I would run out of gigs..

This way, I worked it out, I could DL a avi a DAY !!

Yeah but you live in Adelaide, Internode is based in Adelaide. What is someone in darwin going to be looking at? Much different at all or is it very similar to say my adsl from darwin to adelaide compared to adelaide to adelaide? If so in that case ISDN will be pretty sweet for Darwin users as ping difference isnt all that much :wink:

And is not that a bit illegal.

I am sure telstra did not set up your isdn for what you are now using it for.

Well on Sabaki, I get a 60 ping, but it creeps up to almost 100 when the servers full.. So Im guessing its not the actual ISDN creaping up, just the server is giving me a smaller slice of its bandwidth ( lower rate )..

Are there ANY Darwin based CS servers anymore ? If so post a IP and I will give it a shot..

Just did a tracert to octa4.net.au

From my place 101ms to mail.octa4.net.au which is a hell of a lot better than dialup for the same cost. It routed via melb on the way up, so I cant really judge the hop time from darwin to say sabaki ( in Syd ). But I could guestimate U would see around 80ms as a pingtime to there..

Just pinging sabaki from my place is 74ms with the server full atm. And node is pinging 34ms atm too.

So long as U dont want to DL anything real fast ( DSL speed ) its the bomb really...

But I get no line lag at all.. The only time I see lag on a server is when most others see it as well..

The bottom line is that adsl and isdn are both purely digital in nature, so the ping times should be similar..

The main latency with analog is the connection from your modem to the exchange..

Actually Lataf it is quite legal..

Most isdn modems can do dov, and the traverse one is australian made for the telstra system..

It meerely takes advantage of the fact telstra atm dont have timed voice calls..

U have to have a dov compatable equipment at your ISP.. Do U think for even a second that ISPs are gonna allow illegal connections ??

i rang telstra and they quoted me "90 for the whole shebang - they didnt tell me I could buy my own modem - so I assume that the connection is $99 and they are including their own modems in the "90 deal.

What's a dov modem and dov card? where would I buy those?

They quoted me double the $24.95 and some more. They said it would cost me $49 for the isdn - 2 x the line rental + a $5 price hike.

Also they said there is are 2 ports for the voice lines and another port for the data which can be utilised for the internet but is timed at 30c per minute for one channel and 60c for two per hour.

How come your prices are heaps less? Are Telstra trying to pull a fast one as usual?

The ISDN may end up being "90 install, they may have inflated the price, but that does come with a isnd modem.. But U dont actally use it as such, as U connect to a S-bus connector on the isdn controller ( called a NT-1 ) to get around it :)

BUT U get cheaper local calls, AND caller ID as well on both lines..

So its still a good deal..

Ignore the 30c a minute shite, that is aplicable ONLY to using standard isdn.. U arent gonna do that, so dont even worry about it..

FUTA...an isdn phone line, in my opinion, isn't really a wise idea in darwin, especially with telstra. Darwin phone lines in most areas are pretty bad, and if you happen to live in an area where you already get faults in your line, the isdn line will pick them up a lot more easily.
We had a line for awhile, and we had to get telstra here at least once a week to fix it due to cut outs...
but yeah, that's part of my story :P

Thanx everyone, especially Sly Fox - I looked into it long and hard and finally decided on an Internode dsl account.

The isdn looked ok for a while, but for almost the same cost adsl is available - now I just have to work on my flatties to contribute :o

Anyone know if ya can get billion modems off the shelf in Darwin?

Just to clear some things up.

1st - DOV is only cost effective if the call is a local call. Local call on ISDN = within 25km - doesn't work on a 0198 or just ANY 89xxxxxx number. Distance is very importantant otherwise you will definately get charged for timed calls.

2nd - DOV is only good on a HomeHighway line, ISDN Business Highway don't have untimed local calls.

3rd - Your ISP must support DOV on their end. Be very careful that the bearer type is voice and not DATA. Many people have found out the hard (expensive) way. It is unlikely your ISP will cover the telstra call charges if they have their end misconfigured.

4th - If you can get ADSL- probably not worth getting ISDN and also could complicate it when you eventually decide to move to ADSL.

5th - I've had no ISDN problems - the idea of ISDN is that it is digital all the way to your house. I have uptimes of months and months so for your gaming needs I don't think you will have too many issues.

I have a DOV link to another site which also has a DOV router. No ISP.

Is very helpfull, I called telstra about my broadband options and they said due to paired gain on my line, my only option was isdn, but when they said it costs $ per hour I thought, bugger that...

At the moment I have AAPT as my local and international phone provider. If I was to get dual isdn lines installed would I be able to contuinue to use AAPT or would I have to swap to telscum?

So bassically to sum it up can you get dual isdn lines and stay with a company other than telstra so you can continue to get low international and locally call rates?

Anyway, have foundout a few things...their retail price of "79 + ($9.50 Freight) Includes a free in-line filter, unfortunately they do not include this with the resellers modems, they charge an extra "3 with the unit.

So unfortunatley there is no real margin between resellers price and thier retail in the long run. ("72 delivered with inline filter)

So for this order only, I'll offer to pass on the modem at resellers cost, on the provisior that when u get your adsl connected, you could provide me with a review on the modem (Then I can call it a demo stock for the accountant) And If I am quick, I can order b4 the easter weekend and hopefully have it here on wednesday

Yes I'm in Darwin. Have about 3 or 4 Billions in stock. Will personally deliver to darwin/palmerston area - but can't match lower prices. Can also supply filters - have about half a dozen in stock. Onsite installation (if required) is extra.
