Many of you who were looking forward to Doom 3 and have now seen the HL2 E3 footage will probably have forgotten about Doom altogether. Esspecially now knowing that the soundtrack will not be composed by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and that there will be no multiplayer.

However, a huge number of you still haven't seen the 600mb, 25 minute E3 presentation showing off the wonder that is Half-Life 2. If the reason is your cap, GameArena have just mirrored the file here:
http://games.telstra.com/gamearena/resources/files/?action=details&id=6489

If there are other reasons, that's no excuse, download that movie! It's also availible on FilePlanet.
If any of you want to grab it at DGA21, be sure to waddle up to me and ask for access to my FTP as it will be shared during the entire event.

Don't get me wrong. I want to play both.

But seriously: Doom III doesn't have multiplayer? So what? Everybody thought Quake 3 would flop: "What? No single-player mode? Madness!". John Carmack is a hit-parade, a rocket scientist and a programming God. ie, it takes Valve a team of well over 100 people to beat id with about 10 (of whom Carmack is about three or four).

HL2 will rock. But perspective is required. :)

Don't get me wrong, I'll still be buying and loving Doom 3, but it has become clear which game will reign superior. Valve might as well save packaging costs and release it straight away with the "Game of the Year Edition" box.

As for how many people and how long it takes to create these games, why does the consumer really care? It's the end result that we're interested in, I'm not going to play Doom 3 more than Half-Life 2 because it took less man power to develop.

In todays gaming generation, multiplayer is a very important component of any FPS (first person shooter). A game like Doom 3 could be the best single player game ever created, but long-term success depends on the multiplayer aspects of the game. A single player game such as Doom 3 won't have a lot of replay value, considering that almost all sequences are scripted... things will happen the same way, every time.

Valve have managed to produce something that has the potential to be different every time you play it, and also build dreams with the effort they are putting into the multiplayer component of their product. The Source engine is every MOD developers dream engine. While Half-Life 2 may only be a temporary ecstasy, like the original, its multiplayer and MOD community support will carry it for years to come.

I think Doom III will be a novelty to play (read: scare factor), but once HL2 hits the shelves, I bet everyone will be saying Doom? Oh yeah, played that - it's now collecting dust.

I guess the only saving grace is that Doom3 will be out before HL2.

Post 5

No it wont? Half-Life 2 is set for release on September 30th, Doom 3 had a release date of October and has just been pushed back further.

John Carmack isnt trying to build the best game ever, or game of the year.

He is trying to build the Engine of the year, unfortunatly for him the HL-2 engine looks might tasty right now.

Id makes most of their money off selling game engines: Jedi Kinght 2, RTCW, Medal of Honour, SoF2, all of these games are powered by the quake 3 engine.

He is trying to build an amazing engine for other people to take advantage of.

However it pains me to say it tho, the HL2 engine looks..... amazingly good atm, but not as atmospheric..... However I think the HL2 engine will be able to do atmospheric very well. Just it hasnt been tried properly yet..

I think I am just gonna have to buy both, and play lotsa games that use both engines :P

btw does anyone know if the HL2 engine can do diffuse lighting? I think thats one of the Doom3 engines biggest selling features. If it can do this, then thats one thing that Id will have over Valve

Post 7

It'll be interesting to see a "Battle of Engines" in the next year or two.

As our resident Engrish Master pointed out, id makes oodles from licensing.

Indeed HL2 looks like a case of the Apprentice challenging the Master - Valve created Half-Life after licensing the Quake 2 engine.

However, while I can see HL2 doing a lot of business on the back of the mods community, I don't see why people won't still turn to Carmack first. I mean the Unreal engine, in later incarnations, was substantially more moddable than the Quake 2 and 3 engines, and UT23K continues in that trend. Yet people still license Quake code.

Why?

Because nobody, bar nobody, has ever squeezed so much eye-candy out of any given piece of hardware. Carmack does it again and again, leaving everybody else to catch up.

Now in an industry where screenshots are more important than reviews, it matters to a potential licensee that for US$500,000 they will get better screenshots from the D3 engine than from the HL2 engine, and sod the mods.

As it is Valve may not need to license the engine out that much at all.

Good luck to both of them. Personally I expect that HL2 will be the better single-player game, but I also expect that Doom III code will turn up in more games in future.

i wonder if HL2 will be as good as its predecessor.

Dont get me wrong I have seen the hype I have watched the movies, it looks f*king awesome.. however

Warcraft 3 was gold before it was released. I drooled over this game for a good year crying every night when it was delayed again and again. It showed new techniques for RTS, revolutionary micro management tactics the works.

It got old fast, i play it occasionally and I still think it is a fantastic game but it doesn't even come close to the expectations I arose for it.

I predict HL2 will be the game of the centuary for about 3 months, then people will fall back into their simple lives of counterstrike. I relise everyone pants in anticipation but you have to understand.
People want realism with simplicity. Which is why Starcraft was better then Warcraft 3.

wtf is with me posting as a guest...

The character detail and lighting looks a heap better in Doom3 then hl2. Although the environments may not because they have a more sci fi or fake feel to them which i think is what they were trying to create where hl2 while tyring to keep the sci fi feel is trying to have a more realistic landscape. So until the games are actually played i don't think you can compare the graphics detail of the 2 games as in somes ways each one is better then the other. I bet if the were to use the amount of textures of hl2 using the doom 3 engine they would look about the same maybe better. Also until other games are made with each engine will you really can't compare them as the way the gameplay works and type and feel of game the developer is trying to create will affect a lot in how they make the level designs which is why from the movies hl2 looks better. And the the way doom 3 uses the same lighting on its characters as the rest of the level looks much better from the movies then hl2.

Therefore i don't think you can compare graphics quality based on 2 games which have been made to look differently.

The Half-Life engine was built on the original Quake engine, it had perhaps 10 lines of code from the Quake 2 source, implementing a number of a small fixes.

In what way is any of the Warcraft series realism mixed with simplicity? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the games plots, nor the games graphics engines were designed to be even slightly realistic in those games. :)

But more to the point, I doubt anyone will be falling back to Counter-Strike when CS2, TF2 and DOD2 arrive on shelves. Counter-Strike is already decending into its slow and painful fate.

Post 12

Screw eye candy - doesnt do shit for me. Give me gameplay anyday... Based on that HL2 will blow D3 out of the water ( realistically ;) )

Gameplay > Eyecandy

Post 15

If Doom 3 is "Actually" scary then the graphics will only help if used right make the game better. Sometimes graphics and gameplay can help each other a lot. And if its scary then hopefully it should be a good single player experience.

Hopefully both games should have good gameplay and as they are different each one should have a different experience. Although from the movies i have seen hl2 does show a lot more actual gameplay happening and not just cameras panning around a boring room. If Doom 3 is only graphics then it will probably last a lot less then unreal 2003

Post 16

I have faith that both games will do what the makers are aiming to do with them.

"I want to believe"

Post 17

personally i think someone will create their own multiplayer or mod if u like of doom 3. it sucks that its not coming out that way. because for a game to last it must have multiplay and gameplay value. HL2 looks good as well. cant wait for that.

but would you buy a shitty looking game with shitty grapics and no one has heard of it. coz its got good game play? its good have that pazzaz of havin good looks 8)

Post 18

but it doesn't have to have looks that will blow you away in order to win you over with Gameplay, does it?

in terms of graphics i'm a texture junkie so HL2 is up much higher on my list of good graphics than D3...

will probably end up getting my brother to waste (cough ;)) his money on D3 so i can buy HL2 :D hehehe

Post 19

Would i buy a game that has better gameplay, than that of a game that looks prettier? hell yes.

Look at Counter-strike.
Its gritty, its jaggy, the graphics (in comparison to newer games) are quite frankly shit house. But 1000's upon 1000's of people still play it. Why?
Caus of the gameplay factor.

For a game to be successful, it MUST be enjoyable.
For any single player game, death comes swiftly. If you have a multiplayer aspect, then guess what, the game is gonna be a success (given that the MP side of the game is good also).

Many new games are "CS Killers" before they hit the shelves, but fact is they fail to deliver and quickly turn to dust like a Vampire whos just been impaled on a jagged piece of wood. This is because the designers/producers whatever, have focused on eye candy and not gameplay.

Now from what i have seen with HL2 (watched all the movies), they have successfully combined atmosphere, graphics and gameplay. Original HL was famous for its ambience and atmosphere. Valve and Sierra know this. It only makes sense for them to try and emulate and improve upon that fact with thier latest release, HL2.

They also know, that if CS2 can be anywhere near as successfull as original CS, they are going to be laughing all the way to the bank.

I am look forward to HL2.
Doom what?

Desert Combat Mod for Battlefield 1942 thank you.

Post 22

1000's of people still play it cause its the only game of that type that their system can run.

Post 23

I only really still play it because there's a large community for it and most other people still play it :D Though I don't play it that often anymore..

Post 24

same i only play cs when there no other game running at lans. Although i do still play ns online.

Post 25

As if Half-life has even half the history or nostalgia value that DooM 3 will have.

It will be different from its predecessors, but trust Carmack to be true to the original, improving on it where it should be improved.

DooM would've been the first game I ever really played, and it was where I got my first taste of multi-player, this followed by Quake is part of the reason I am the geek I am today.

For me, DooM 3 will be special because of that - and I suspect it will hold this place for others who were gaming back then. It is DooM, and Half-life isn't.

Post 26

Understood Aravi, but that won't make it a better game.

That same feeling you have, will be the same for many others with Half-Life 2, who started their gaming "careers" with the original HL. Like-wise, that feeling won't make it a better game. Perhaps a more memorable one, drawing the nostalgic tear, but that won't win over the reviewers in the long run, nor the community... Regardless of the history, they're going to need to be good games, or it will perhaps put a stain on the entire legacy.

Absolutely no argument there.
DC is fun for sure and has a bigger following than the original game.
Which further proves my point
They did get a nice mix of eye candy and gameplay. Something which HL2 will do even better :)

Btw, id have shown off a multiplayer demo of Doom 3 a few weeks (or months? I can't remember. Quakecon or something I think) ago so Doom 3 is definitely gonna have multiplayer, even if it's not the focus on the game. In a recent interview, one of the guys, I can't remember his name said that although there were a max of four people in the demo, and probably in the base game, the max player count can be changed for mods.

Post 29

Yep, multiplayer has been given the green light once more, 4 player DM was boasted at Quakecon.

Post 30

Thank god for that :D

But even if it didn't, look at GTA VC, it didn't even have multiplayer in mind when it was made and someone else has made a multiplayer client for it. It can be done either way, but it's definately better that ID are doing it themselves :D
