its almost too hot to touch
is this normal? if not then wtf, because i jsut got a new one... same card, but new one...any suggestions?

Yeah if it's working don't f*cking fix it.
Although I'm yet to find a GPU that runs as hot as my Voodoo3 3k did when it had afterburners to full.

The thing never crashed or ground to a hault though.

Ohhh, my tnt2 pro used to run so hot :D, and occasionally the screen would go whacked multi coloured crazy mofo textures... that was such a cool card :D.
