It's called jailbreak. It's the first thing I did to my work iphone. I feel a lot cleaner using it now.
Yeah, I've kind of been avoiding it coz everyone I know who has done it gets weird bugs and things screwing up from time to time. But jailbreaking techniques have probably improved since I last checked.
having had the opportunity to help someone with their ipad today, fuck apple.
I don't give a shit what it offers once jailbroken, the need to do things through itunes and having it say, "well if you want to do anything we'll have to erase all your shit". I understand you can tick a box somewhere and that turns this off, but you have to do this on one specific computer, before you know that you need to do it.
apple can suck it. I will still recommend it to people who need to be coddled, but I wouldn't touch it myself unless it was free, and I don't mean work "free", where I have to use it but not jailbreak it, and not do anything fraudilicious.
This is opposed to an android tablet I also got to help with today, where you plug it in and have full access to the internal/external storage (external usb port). The closed box bullshit that Papple force on people is utterly frustrating.
I'm hearing a fair bit on whirlpool about mixed success purchasing outright from JB HI-FI for $650, and have a copy of the receipt that has been used for some of the successful purchases.
Heading to Adelaide next week so I might try my success where I have some chance of going in to more than one store.
Ok, so the casino fairies donated me $500 to the phone cause and JB hifi did me $670 with no effort at all so I'm typing this on my shiny new sensation. Love it so far, but I haven't had it long.
Thanks to all who replied, I'm sure I'll be bugging you all again soon with app questions.
