Computer RPG - not console.
Mine was Might and Magic 1 on the Apple IIe.
4 of us used to gather round after school and 'own' one of the 6 chars in the party.
Do you think it affected what type of RPG's you now prefer?
Or what type of chars you play in those games?
i think it was diablo 1
Diablo has really been the only rpg i have played :) (not including consoles) i know there is better but meh :P
Castle of the Winds 1 and 2 were my first ones from memory. Diablo was like a more graphical version of them.

I think i got them on floppy to although i doupt they will work seeing as these days if i buy a new floppy disk it works once and thats it.

I think mine was one of the Ultima's. So I bought the whole series.

a game i cant remember the name too. but it was on my very first computer i used. go the 486 :) thats right...a whole 33mhz cpu speed. woah.
im pretty sure it was king's quest the original :)
First (and memorable) RPG's, in rough order of date-of-playing:
[i]Eye of the Beholder I[/i] Cannot be highly recommended enough... Flawlessly done in all aspects, DnD based. Absolute CLASSIC. More <some?> RP would be nice however. This game, second to Wing Commander I, is my most played game.
[i]Eye of the Beholder II[/i] Best of the series; actual RP in this one, an absolute gem. Uses modded EOB I engine. Can transfer your party from EOB I, a big plus.
[i]Eye of the Beholder III[/i] A serious letdown for EOB fans, but it definately has it's good points. Excelent RP, souped up graphics, 'All Attack' feature to save your wrist... Too bad pretty much everything else sucked. Can transfer your party from EOB II.
[i]Ultima VI - The False Prophet[/i] Highly recommended... VERY LONG. Flawless, except that the story is very very very difficult to figure out and it's so easy to get distracted on the way. Plus is really buggy.
[i]Ultima I -> VII[/i] All good, in various degrees.
Like, a lot of stuff here I don't really remember.
[i]Amulets and Armour[/i] Think a fantasy shoot-'em-up, with a complicated but awesome rune-based magic system using a modified Doom engine. Awesome fun.
[i]King's Quest VII[/i] Although many people believe this to be a "Chick's Game", with all female main characters and a very feminate story, I think it is the best of all the King's Quest series. It is highly recommended, and officially abandonware/freeware (was free, full version on the cover CD of one copy of PC-Gamer; April 1999 I believe? ... damn that's sad that I remember. Anyway, onwards!)
[i]Final Fantasy VII[i] One hell of a game. Ranked in my top five games of all time. Extremely highly recommended, very long and detailed. This game was the first game which got me so attached to a fantasy character that I actually cried at one point (players of this game will know who, and what, I am talking about- please don't wreck it for everyone else!). Minor flaw in that it's rather easy to get stuck and gameplay is rather linear with minor deviations to complete non-necessary and trivial quests.
[i]Fallout[/i] If you havn't played either of the Fallout RPG series, you are missing out. That simple.
[i]Fallout II[/i] Even better then the original, IMHO, although some will disagree. Again, if you havn't played this, you are seriously missing out on one of the best modern RPG's ever made. Minor annoying tick; the Out Of Character stuff gets a bit tedious after the ten thousandth time around, but once you've played it that much you don't really care about that stuff.
[i]Baldur's Gate[/i] IMHO, the best D&D game ever bought to PC, suppassed only by it's sequel. This, along with the Fallout series, is one of the staple RPG's you must experience. One of the top five best RPG games of all time.
[i]Icewind Dale[/i] This game, while a serious letdown after the stunning Baldur's Gate, sports the best "Bad Guy(?) Voice" I have ever experienced in a role playing game. Her voice is absolutely creepy.
[b][i]Baldur's Gate II[/i] This game is the best RPG I have ever played... I put in bold to emphasise it. Absolutely flawless in every aspect, sublime. It is serious, funny, sad, romantic all at once... an epic. Nothing bad can be said about it. As of writing, this game is without equal or parallel. If there's one game I must recommend you do play to completion, it is Baldur's Gate II. You will NOT be disappointed. One of my top three best modern games of all time, and definately the number one RPG.[/b]
[i]Neverwinter Nights[i] I was sadly disappointed by Neverwinter Nights. Still, the third edition rules and the ability to make your own campaigns are awesome, and it has a very loyal fanbase... which does not include me. Still, it does have some really sweet points, and is worth a try.
All of the above games, excluding Neverwinter Nights and perhaps Baldur's Gate II, can be picked up for $20 or less at most good gaming stores. I believe SiS proclaimed Eye Of The Beholder I, II and III to be abandonware a few years ago, so you can generally download them from any good (legitimate) abandonware website. Ultima Series, too, can be found about the place... particularly pre-VII versions. [url]www.the-underdogs.org[/url] is a good source. I highly suggest you get them all, you will not be disappointed.

We dont need a rundown on the RPG history, good chances are many of us have played more than you. Keep on track please bud.
Come to think of it, if you count games like Kings Quest and Space Quest as RPG's then those two along with Leisure Suit Larry would be the first ones I played.
Yeah well they ARE roleplaying, doesnt have to be SCI-FI. :)

probably would have either been eye of the beholder or kings quest, way too long ago to remember :P
I love the kings quest series though, used to have all of them till the disks died, so we got the cd version and they died..can anyone say cursed? :P

Actually come to think of it, I think the first rpg I actually owned was Shadowgate. I think that's it's name... where you click what you wanna do. I finished it a few years later.

would have to be eye of the beholder. my first foray into rpgs. had no idea about it at first, then got sucked into dnd(though never did play pen and paper)
also...does anyone remember megatraveller 2? that was also one of my first. lots of intersolar system trading and lots of futuristic zapping action.

What about real RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons...the old school paper games that you sat around in groups and ended up killing each other because everyone was chaotic neutral.
If not that then Betrayal at Krondor after Eye of the Beholder.

I had a Computer, well it kidda was one, think it was like 16K thing (if that)
It had a text based RPG game.
You get a Text Message like "You standing on top of a hill next to you crashed spaceship, there are exits to the North and South and a Cave to the East"
Then you type a request like "Go East"
And it goes "You are in a cave, it has a ice floor, there are exits to the West and East" etc etc etc
No idea what it was called, but before it I was a RPG virgin, I hadn't even heard of D&D then.

I played a games like that, no idea what it was called but this one had still images (albeit very lame pixely ones), god did that game have some lastability 8)

I only got Baldur's Gate 2 last Christmas, loved it. I wanted to play it on lan... but everyone else gave up really fast. It might have had something to do with me fireballing them all, killing everyone when we hadn't saved at all... (it was an accident!).

The Hobit on the 286. Text based with pretty monocrome scenery shots. But first none text was either kings quest 1 or space quest 1. can't quite remember.
