Hmm I'd like some sort of definiton of the word 'Nerd'.

Sure, I'm a big fan of gaming, computers, etc. I spend a fair amout of time on the comp, but I don't consider myself a nerd.

I have a life: i.e. - a job, uni, a car, couple circles of friends, regular parties - as I'm sure tons of GU people do.

Yet I'm labeled a nerd because my hobby is computers? I think that sucks.

but anyway, why is being a nerd a bad thing? i got told once that i geek is higher than a nerd in the social class of things.... that even geeks pick on nerds... i think labels are stupid, espcially in a community like this where everyone is so different... there is a common interest, maybe its just the one, so you shouldnt group people like that.

I don't consider myself a dork, a nerd, a geek or a gamer but then again I don't consider myself a super hot stud with friends hanging off my finger tips. I'm just your average person who gets B's and the occasional A and likes to play ONE game on the internet being Counter-Strike.

Its a tricky one to work out. As every male i have ever met, plays some form of computer games. Be it playstation, Cs, or whatever. I think that it is the compedative aspect of males that drive us. We like to compete and we like to try and win. So its only natural to incorprate some form of competition into after hour activities. Personally i like to play cricket alot, but i cant play that after hours. I like to play pool, but you cant go everynight, so Cs or any other computer games, fills in that slot. It provides one with entertainment, and lanning although considered to be nerdy, is actually more socialable than playing at home by yourself. I dont know i cant really answer this question... I just cant put my fingure on it. =(

Well that doesnt seem to have any point but ah well =)

for sum reason if u play games on computer u r labled nerd/geek/whatever the fuck people want to call you. but if u own a PS2 and a shitload of games, ur not a nerd/geek/whatever the fuck people want to call you. as disturbed pointed out, most males play computer games, but the majority of them are on there shitty little consoles which do not have the multiplayer abilitys of a computer, therefore i find not as addictive.

personally id say that gaming (especially in a community like this is very socical), u get to know people, become mates etc just as people do when they go out. only thing is that instead of looking at their faces ur blowing it to gibs or saying "you take the point".

I dont think I'm either as playing computer games is a hobbie. Just like people like going clubbing or playing soccer we dont put them in a group for doing something they love so why should we get put in a group for doing something we love.

I mean i still also do other thing such as hang out drink and all that I have a hot gf who also loves learning about games and wants to play them and people dont think she is a nerd cause she looks like a model.
So why should we be put in a certin group when were just like everyone else doing things were interested in.

Other than as a joke, I have never had anyone specifically call me a nerd. I met most of my friends before I used computers lots. Even so, I spend 12 hours minimum online each day (not always at the computer) and tell my friends I play games. I am one to much rather go out with my friends, then play CS with my friends, but that's not nerdy. I always considered a nerd/geek just those people in school, in which weren't so popular with people. I don't know how they ended up like that, I never really judged by looks, but they were the people who gave you THE most useless information if ever you tried to talk to them, and you left feeling stupider, and you would go tell your friends and have a good laugh at them, and then rip them off about it for a while...

When I'm with my friends, I never talk about my online gaming experiences, well, I do sometimes, in the event of being told something funny by someone online, or something funny happening, or if I can relate something back. I try to teach them a few things about computers like image file extensions, and basically how to be COMFORTABLE with a computer, but I don't start talking about BIOS and POST and stuff.
