Need help optimising Cs 1.6

Ok people, basically what are the tweaks that people know to get 1.6 running smoother/faster.

ATM, I play on a ping of around 60, with anywhere beteen 45 and 120 FPS, and it feels really laggy. The response time from the mouse to the screen is just not acceptable.

What variables should i be setting to what (this is for a cabler)? I've got my rate set to 25000, but I don't know what else to optimise.

suggestions welcome.

thanks,
-D.

First of all: Don't be running Direct 3D :D

Run OpenGL.

Post 3

for starters, you cant have a rate of 25000, it is to damn high... :D
so me thinks you have a rate of 2500. with the rate, if you alow to much info to come through, it may get laggy, not so much with cable or adsl, but i still find it does a little, but on the same hand if you have your rate to low, it seems laggy as well, as its not letting enough info through to run smoothly. I may be wronge with this so if i am let me know. But i like to run with a rate of about 4500/5000 i dont like to go any higher or lower than this...

Post 4

Ok, i'll try running OpenGL (got it on direct 3d atm). and yes, my rate is 25 000 (twenty five thousand), i'll experiment with lower rates...

anything else?

Post 5

i also need to know if there are any other tweaks

Post 6

I used to have this problem something chronic while running in Direct3D

add this to your d3d.cfg file:
gl_d3dflip 1

that should fix any input lag

Post 7

would that work with all graphics cards?

ie radeons?

Post 8

This is actually straight out of the half-life readme.txt.

Quote:
Direct3D Input seems lagged.
If your input seems to lag behind the visual display on occasion, add this line to your d3d.cfg file:

gl_d3dflip 1

If your having problems with the game lagging behind the mouse inputs, then it definitly won't hurt to try. I wouldn't think its hardware specific...

Post 9

running OpenGL seemed to fix most of my lag probs, allthough the FPS is slightly lower (sitting steady on 60).

I'll try your suggestions for D3D.

Quick question. where is the d3d.cfg file, or where should it go, i searched and could not find?

cheers,
-D.

I have the retail version, and the file should be sitting in here: C:\Sierra\Counter-Strike\valve\hw

If your running the non-retail version - well it's there somewhere.

Hmm I just realised you're running 1.6 - maybe it's different for 1.6?

interesting that a search didn't turn it up

Post 11

how can u get up to 120 fps? cs only goes up to 100 :P

good rates for cable are about

cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 30
rate 9999

the higher ur rates the higher ur ping but on cable it doesn't really make much difference
i use 41/41/10000

OpenGL is best

try changing ur res to 800 x 600

other than that u wont' get much better fps without upgrading ur CPU / video card

Post 12

800x600

*screams and runs away never to see a 800x600 res ever again*

seriously, if uve got a 17' monitor or larger (which is what most gamers have, and if they dont they should go and buy one right now) you have to be running games at a higer res then that or it is but ugly. i run most of my games at 1280x1042 this is on a GF4Ti4200. on CS i get constant 60fps (dunno on 1.6 but i dont notice any change), ET with full detail everythings smooth, BF with medium-high detail alls smooth aside from when i rain down rockets from a choper in DC, those particle effects hit me sumthing nasty.

seriously though, 800x600 is just to low, it is butt ugly on alot of games aswell(ie BF, try running it on 800x600 for 5 mins then change back to a higher res, very noticable).

Post 13

Yeah, CS doesn't do more than 100fps, and most servers don't allow rates more than about 6000-6500 so there's not much point in making it 25,000.

I'm on Optus cable using the following settings:
rate 5500
cl_rate 6000
cl_updaterate 15
cl_cmdrate 15

Using these setting I usually get a ping of between 30 and 5 :D

Post 14

dude!

if you want it smooth...

cl_cmdrate 51
cl_updaterate 51
rate 15000

and if u wanna be a bastard...

cl_cmdrate 101
cl_updaterate 101
rate 25000
ex_interp 0.05

and yes all servers let you go up to 25000

Post 15

that's pretty much what i had exo (the bastard settings :P ). Allthough changing it to OpenGL has made a HUGE difference. Only running at 60 FPs, but it's constant, none of this jumping around which is sweet.

Mungus, maybe read the title of the thread next time....

And yes, the FPS was going above 100, don't ask me how, I don't know.

I have been playing on 800 * 600 though, so I'll try upping that a bit see what it does to my game play. Wouldn't all those heads get way smaller though?? make it harder to get HS (allthough 1.6 is HS city!)

640*480 with 4xAA on the Voodoo looks sweet.
GFFX at 8xS, 12 or 16xAA also made me wet myself.

Post 17

800x600 isn't too bad, i know rec plays at that or at 640x480 in CS (or did.. i think)
