Ok... I know someone might think this is stupid... or just because i posted it its stupid i dont know and i dont care , but i want to know what YOU people's thoughts are on life?

Be honest, if you love life, its the best thing tell me, exactly what you think..

If you hate it and want to die... Tell me, be honest please... I'm not going to think your an idiot or fool or wannabe anything.... if you dont like it, say so dont be embarrised.

I personally dont like life much, I have cut myself recently because i've been bored or even because i was in a happy mood, wierd yeah ok, but i dont care sometimes i like it.

But I love life for only one reason. My Lovely Girlfriend, I love her to death and she is honestly the only reason atm why i like life, If i wasnt with her there would be no reason for me to like life, apart from CS.

I dont care if you think im wierd you can tell me or keep it to yourself.

I'm only after peoples thoughts on life, thanks :)

Hmm... apparently I'm heaps philosophical, and so I see life heaps different to what other people see it. I personally, mostly love life. It certainly gets to me, but I find it hard to stay angry at someone, or sad at all. I can't be sad. I am just always too happy :)

Life it's self is an issue, as society drifts away from being religious, people are being to find that to them it have no purpose as they lose their “got to be good or else God will smite me” type of thinking, so my reply is more of a “what it the purpose of life” issue.

Are we here to reproduce and continue our species and that is it, or is there a higher purpose? This issue with is that the “higher purpose” sends the issue spiraling back towards religion.

Here is a thought for what we are here for, that ties us into a higher purpose (of sorts) and reproduction the continuation of our species.

Humans are here to create “An infinite mass of Humanity”.

One day in the distant future Humanity will have nailed down space travel and Colonization of other planets and will slowly but surely speared across the universe until the Calculate able weight of all humans in existence reaches an infinite number, henceforth reaching “An infinite mass of Humanity”.

There are issues with this higher cause, being that the length of time that will be needed to achieve this means that it’s not a cause you could really put your life towards and among other things our inherently war like nature mixed with greed and religion , which stops even the small population of the Earth from living together.

But this may well be the real destiny of Humanity.

What is the fundamental human goal? In the end, all concsious actions everyone are governed by happiness. The calculation of gain versus cost in terms of overall happiness, whatever form that may be, based on available knowledge. We're not always right mind you :P

This is an evolutionary mechanism created to guide our decisions.

So ultimately we try to get the most amount of happiness possible within our limited timeframe. The best way to do this is in essence the same as game theory (Created by John Nash, watch A Beautiful Mind ^_^):
In a game with multiple participants, the best overall outcome is achieved not by each participant doing what's best for themselves but by each participant doing what's best for themselves AND what's best for everyone else. This has been mathematically proven btw :P But it's really simple, cooperation and compassion are fundamental keys to achieving happiness.

This is my philosophy for the importance of morals while negating the need for religious belief.

Now that said, happiness is not limitless while sadness and depression essentially is. There are built in mechanisms within our brains that block the release of endorphins over a long time frame etc. This stops us from say, if you really like chocolate, the first few bars or so may seem orgasmic but after awhile the chocolate begins to lose it's appeal, not counting you getting full or anything.

So humans are always facing an uphill battle as it's really easy to get sad but really hard to get happy and stay happy for long periods of time.

Anyway, back to the original question. When I'm happy I feel as if I can see all the grand cosmic beauty of existance, with all the possibilities out there, ready for me to try out. When I'm sad I see nothing. No way out, my cosmic insignificance and all the problems in my life and the problems with the world building over me.

So life can be wonderful when you're happy and totally worthless when you're sad, even if you're in the exact same position.

The problem is people take life too seriously, which is why alot of people are grumpy old farts! As was said "Lighten Up" gotta joke around more take things in a more positive manner.

As Monty Python says "Always look on the bright side of life ..... *whistle*"

I went through the depressive stage when I was younger. I wasn't foolish enough to end my life though as I knew things had to get better at some point. And finally everything turned out for the best.

You just need to find a job or area of study that you really enjoy doing / learning about. I know many people take a dislike to school and is one thing everyone must suffer through. But take it easy cruise through and life gets better at the end of the tunnel.

on a side note: I have a friend whos the happiest and most generous person I know, and yet he cuts himself with a knife all the time, whenever he's bored. Even in maths he once got out a lighter and heat the blade of his knife up for about 10 seconds then cut a gash in the side of his arm, I was like "what the fuck" because the way he acted around people you'd think it was the last thing he'd do, but he comes to school with slashes along his arm from when he cut himself the night before :shock:

I say we wipe the fucking board like we all did as children and demand to play something else. Leading to a problem really...alternatives to life...hmmmm, not really all that much on offer at the moment. I don't think my saving for cryogenic freezing is going to get me more than a couple of hours of frozen slumber. We (I'm 19) are the first generation to be weened on postmodernism. Life is meaningless. We are no longer machinations of a greater machine leading to the appearance of a godlike figure. We are not a new generation looking forward to urban life and social interations. We are bored, apathetic and meaningless. While I hate postmoderism with a passion, most it's tenaments are very relevant to culture and society today - just expressed badly in some artistic endevors.
That of course wont apply in all cases, and I'm very very jealous of you hopeful (albeit ignorant :wink:) peoples who can cruise through all of the angsty crap.

Is being dead really such a bad thing if you believe you are incapable of experiencing something...um...I'll call it "real". personally, i love my life. occasionally i get depressed, or angry at myself (it's rare that i get mad at others, believe it or not :)), but generally i take things as they come. i'm learning to scuba dive at the end of the year, and i want to learn how to kite surf. on top of this i want to travel, because i feel that there's more to the world than what's fed to me through the media, and through the diluted opinions of others.

I still hate life nothing has changed. But one thing i love.... besides my g/f one thing i love doing when my g/f isnt here.... is gfx work in Photoshop and image ready i find it fun, i'm not all that good at it, i know basics, i get Harb ot help me a fair bit... but i still enjoy it, i've figured a few things out recently, but as much fun as it is... i still hate life :D

I love many people, i like doing things... doesnt mean i still can't hate life.

meh, that question could be asked 3 times in a day, and often, most people will feel differently about life each time.... you'll hate it cos its 6am and you hvae to wake up, you'll love it because its home time and your seeing your g/f or movie, or whatever afterwards, then you'll be at home by yourself and hate it.

having said this, i hardaly like life. i dont like people they get on my nerves usually, and you cant avoid people in life, so i deal with it, just makes it all a bit more painful. of corse, every now and then its not so bad, its more that im content than happy....i havent run singing thru the streets since i was 16.... but thats what drugs are for, to help you float blissfully through life.... oh and the cutting yourself up thing.... yeah well your not the only on who does that, it is sometimes a cause for concern, if your worried about it, talk to someone or go see a psychologist or something.

It is when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are many things
about yourself that you didn't know and may not like.
You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two,

friends that you thought you were so close to aren't exactly the

Life's what you make of it.. if you can't be bothered to make the effort then life is going to be pretty boring isn't it. Yes most of us realise life sucks but you have to get over it.. I don't particularly like it either.. infact quite often I can't wait until the day I die because I find this all so pointless.. but what's REALLY pointless is mulling over the same shit over and over and over and over.. you just have to get out there and have a go.. have the experience... and at least TRY to enjoy yourself... give it a chance :) You might find you can make do.. cope.. or even begin to like life among the living.

there's a comment in a movie or a book or something about those last few minutes of life after your body has died but your brain is still going steady. something like 9 minutes i believe. the author compares that time to dream time and the speed of thought. how we can have an intense, narrative dream and wake up a minute later.

you can think of nothing. imagine being drunk. very very drunk. so drunk that you're comatose and passed out. people are writing rude things on your forehead and you're completely oblivious to it. better still, remember back to being in that state. pretty fucking difficult yes?

has anyone else come to the conclusion that we (the angsty ones) are here because we don't like to think about what us not being here would do to the people around us? also that there's still that little glimmer of hope from pandora's box?

Korny, dude, in all honesty I think you should probably seek some help about your prob, I mean you sound fairly depressed about it dude, I know this isn't the place to say this but I think you need it.

If you want to vent your frustration or anger just yell at me over icq and not on the forums hey :D I'm always here to listen to people with probs.

I realise some attention is needed to feel a bit better but maybe take a look in the mirror and talk to yourself about whats going on in life, and take a practical and mature approach to sort it out :)

Life is a completly shit and will be probably for the next god knows how many years, but try enjoy yaself eh? :wink:

dad said no hes got school. mum already said i could. So i stormed out yelling "Why can't you let mum make any fucking desicions for once!"

AND then when i got home from school, school called home because my IT teacher is a bitch that has something against me, and now i can't do shit this weekend so no DGA i dont know if i can see my g/f but i told mum and dad, i am going to see her weather you let me or not !!! grrrr

Wow great thread, ill spend the last part of the hour adding to this debate.

I think since i became a teenager, i began to feel a certain way about the world. I think this came from realising several harsh realities, breaking free of the fairytales and makebelieve that envelopes childhood. It was about this time i began to actually start to question. Question religion, existance and the meaning of life. Now, childhood has a place. It is a great time everyone should have priviledge to, its a time of innocence and naivity. But like childhood, this naivity cannot and should not last forever. For me at least, this breakthrough occured because my parents split when i was 8, i learnt in grade 6 i was not the invincible all powerful center of the universe, i was too antisocial - which bit me on the bum in later years, learnt santa and easter bunny werent real, etc.

So ive spent the rest of my teenage years trying to answer these questions of myself, what do i want out of life? is life a gift? Does the human condition prevent us from ever being happy? What is the meaning of life?

I believe there is no god or afterlife. I could rant on about the scientific theorums, which would be very like me, however ill just plain state i believe this. Because it is a stage for debate, some people are so sure, they are ready to die for their beliefs. This is a conclusion i reached for myself. But im not out to change anyone elses opinion, youve got to decide for yourself. You'll either believe in afterlife, no afterlife, or not really care. However i recon the only thing worse than beliving in an afterlife is not caring, is passing through life not even stopping to question what it all means.

I have come to accept that happiness is a relative, temporary state. Take two examples: A poor child come rich man, A priviledged child come servo. This priviledged kid has grown up with expectations, of things being handed to them. What this does is provides a benchmark for the rest of their life. A well off person would be much more unhappy as a servo than a poor person (I dont mean any offence to any servo's out there). Now, the poor child that becomes a rich man, should theoretically be happier than a priviledged kid gone executive. This is all because of the expectations and benchmark one has. Ok, i know a lot of you already have their mouse' on the reply button to point out im only talking about money here. True. Im a firm believer that money does not bring you happiness, but it works to relieve you of whats nessicary in life (food, clothing housing). Mind you thats an entire other debate, the purpose of money, and i cant be fucked diverging at the moment, my point proceeds. This principle of happiness being relative can of course apply to relationships and other important things. It just so happens i had possibly the best girl for me in my first relationship, and it buggered over because i didnt handle it properly, i was only learning :D. By recognising that the system of feeling happy is all relative, im prepared for what follows. I have little appreciation for the 'accumulation of wealth' because it isnt important. I know happiness is going to come through experiences, not money.

I think life is good. Life is an opportunity. It is a chance. A chance at what? Whatever you want it to be. If you want to be a chainsaw murderer, thats your choice. If you want to live to be constantly happy, you're probably kidding youself.

Personally, i see a lot good in the world as ive said. But ive had the gift/curse of being relativly priviledged. Now, those of you who go "Rich prick" or "oh you poor bugger", you obviously havent followed my arguement thus far. What i want to do, what i want my life achievement to be, is to travel and experience. I cannot wait to go to uni. Im going to have a great time meeting new people and learning about the world. When i get out there and backpack, i will experience the world for how it really is. The human trauma, the wastelands of poverty, the utter despair of the human condition, the oppression of third world countries; all in an attempt to establish a true perspective, a proper tier of expectation for the world. I embrace the world with an open mind, a fragile heart, and an empty soul.

Then as OD said, there are the little things in life. The most forfilling thing is creating something new. Breaking the same old cycle of post modernism. I hate it, everything is ripped off from something else. Society is looking for answers in all the wrong places, the past. The only way forward...is forward. Whatever i end up doing as a job, its going to be creative, thinking and proactive.

I would describe myself as a sceptical optimist. Im a sensual person, a romantic, a poet, an analyst, an idealist, a socialist, a pig, in a cage, on antibiotics (radiohead lyrics). There are a heap of ways to describe something, but in the end its just a load of opinions and ideas. Quote:

one reason i heard from a friend at school was: "I fear death because life is so fucking great". Generally, that's what most of my friends have to say if they believe that. The other friends don't fear death because their belief is similar to what you have stated - there is not point.

Anyway, Korny. i dealt with a whole hunk of depression on my own. goddamn it feels good to be over that stage in my life. :)

however, for some people, talking to professionals is definately the way to go...

Thanks for all your imput people, its a great read, I just finished yelling at my Homegroup/IT teacher because she made shit up and told my dad that shit. and i told her to ring him and apologise... it pissed me off that much, and if i can't see my g/f this weekend í'm gonna cut sick at my dad and at the teacher...

Its stupid, shes stupid, no one can understand her and she says thigns that pisses people off without knowing it. I want her to die.

if anyone wants to talk to someone, i have aaallllll the resources, numbers and such for places to go.... websites, mental health places, free, not free, you name it.... or, you can wander around town and look for this lil book that the DCC puts out called 'feeling blue' or something like that.... which has all the info you'd need i guess. there is a youth one put out by them too.... im pretty sure the lastest edition has a red cover.

Depression is such a hardcore thing, alot of people cant see the ned of the tunnel and feel like its going to go forever. some people are on meds, some just deal with it, but no matter what, you need help sometimes. just venting, like folks are doing here is actually a huge thing in healing and getting over it. so gold stars for you all who do that! yay! .... for those who dont, or cant, or dont feel like they are being listened to, seeing a psychologist is good because your right there and can see they are listening.... or you could call crisis line, im not doing it just yet, but i know people in my corse who do, and they are really friendly and helpful people who can lead you in the right direction too.... oh they have face to face councilling too, i dont think many people realise that....

I think that most of you, are pretty damn stupid, and your views on things are definitely fucked up, although I believe because of some of your ages (I'm 21), that is the cause.

You expect too much, too soon out of life.

When I was younger (say 14-16) I wanted to grow up, I wanted to be allowed to do whatever I want, whenever I want, and answer to nobody for my actions but myself.

Now I have my wish, no one can tell me anything to do, I do whatever I like, and have no one to answer to but myself, but it hasn't come without a price.

I no longer have the comfort of just going home, and not getting up the next day if I don't feel like it because I have responsibilities. Sure I could act upon some of my responsibilities in a better and more mature way but sometimes I just don't care.

You all expect to much so soon out of life, I think of how knowledgeable I was when I first started high school, then I think of how I am now, and I simply cannot wait until I am older, like 40 at least. If my knowledge continues to increase then I think it will be simply amazing.

You only get out of life what you put in, how do you expect to get any satisfaction out of the small things in life, when you don't put in the time and effort required to get the necesites (sp?) done.

Everything you do in life is a choice, whether that choice is made out of need or want, it is still a choice and you have to live with the consequences. You can choose to let every obstacle get you down, make you depressed and feeling like shit, or you can use those obstacles, accept them for what happened, realised how you could prevent/improve the obstacle, and use it to lead you on with life to something better.
