if neone knows or has ne idea where to get Quality gear from would be helpful.

im lookin for a

E36 5 or 6 speed gearbox (Qshift or not)
Twin turbo's or Super charger
Light body kit

all the other xtra's are acounted 4.

this is the next step from a Fairlane :D

Post 2

Hmm this may be a challenge, excuse me for asking but where do you live? That'll help for places :P

But assuming you want bmw parts (mainly gearbox) id say ya best bet would be to go to a wrecker or a bmw dealer (junk yard) for the gearbox.

The twin turbo honestly no idea, theres a mil places to start, all depends on what you want and how big you want it.

The body kit, any fibre glass place should be able to do this kind of work.

Go through the Yellow Pages, its great for things like this, you'll find businesses youd never thought :P

Post 3

A Place like Supercheap auto or even a BMW dealer might be able to tell you where to go for that sort of stuff

Post 4

Hope u got the $ for insurance, you will need it. :)

definitely

Post 6

there's this one wicked place you can take it.. they'll do all these mods and everything.. but it's pretty pricey.. i've got a pic

it's called a trade-in at your local holden dealer.

Post 7

try posting on www.boostcruising.com , they'll b able to tell u for sure and they usually reply really fast

Post 8

go the bodykit and get the six speed gearbox (supposed to be much quicker changes (smoother) than the 5'er).

Forget about the supercharger and the turbo... i can't remember if the 36's have an inline six or an inline four but either way TWIN turbo's are useless and even a turbo won't do much. (got to think about it like this: will the other components stand the forced air the turbo is pumping through, the heat generated by that etc will the turbo last very long and is it really worth the risk of the thing: 1. blowing up or 2. costing the earth in Insurance)

not to mention, there really isn't that much room under the hood for a supercharger, iirc.

Post 9

I think hes like me and isn't bothered about the potential damage to the engine somewhere down the track. Basically if you buy good stuff and do it properly the first time, it WILL last.

OK, the BMW is a 2 litre inline 4, 16 valve. In this instance, I'd go the turbo way as opposed to the supercharger.

The reason for this is because a supercharger needs to take some engine power to make the extra power as the drive belt is driven off the crankshaft. In the case of a 4 cylinder, they don't have very high torque levels, so it would probably be a bit sluggish off the mark trying to drive the engine AND the blower.

With the turbos, they are driven off the exhaust so they don't need engine power and will allow the engine to rev a bit more freely down low. One problem with this, however, is that they take a while to spool up and so don't provide boost down low like a supercharger. A smaller turbo will fix this problem but too small and it won't supply enough boost up high. Basically you need to balance it out.

Ideally, ud run twin turbos, one small one and one larger turbo. The smaller turbo would spool up very quick, and supply boost down low, as that turbo ran out of puff up in the higher rev range, a bypass valve would shut off exhaust to gasses to the samller one, and open it to the other, allowing the larger turbo to spool up in time to supply top end boost.

Also, you want to look at some camshafts as well as they are THE mopst important part in making power, as well as good valve gear. Valve bounce = piston damage = bad.

Neway, hope that makes sense. :?

Post 10

Arent all the 3 series inline 4's??

Post 11

yes they are
edit: or I could be wrong :P

Not some of the new ones, alla i.e 320Ci, 325Ci, 330Ci

Post 13

hes in adelaide if anyone was wondering :)

get an FTO!

Post 14

not all are inline 4's. there are inline 6's also - M3 and the others that Text book mentioned.

FTO's are alright... not really worth it imho (they handle like a go kart but they don't provide the whole 'kick in the back feeling' i was expecting...)

Wrathlon is correct. But it will be costly if you go down this road. You will also have to pass roadworthy etc. (they might not like those twin turbo's... without added safety features of course ;))

Post 15

If u upgrade ur engine, ur gonna need to upgrade ur brakes as well. Also, with emissions, u should be fine with a turbo as turbo engines generally have lower emissions than supercharged engines

Post 16

It comes down to this.

BMW aren't keen power people when it comes to Super Chargers and Turbo systems. They haven't really had much to do with them in the past even though they have played with them.

Remember as well, that a Turbo engine and an NA engine have a few differences. It's not a simple matter of plugging a couple of turbo's on and away you go.

To turbo an engine (in this case) you'll need to lower the compression ratio to a modest level of at least 9, or probably the usual 8.5. This can be achieved by adding a new head gasket, however, you'll find that the internals aren't really setup for it, so you'll also be looking at new pistons (probably forged), new conrods, and bearings and seals. By now after this, getting all these internals and changes done will be up around the 6-7 for just the mods. We haven't even added the turbo/SC yet.

Now add onto the fact that you'll need to upgrade the clutch, and that'll probably have to be a custom jig because so few people would really be looking for much more performance out of these cars, unless they're universal clutches in BMW's (I doubt it). That's upto another 2K there (more likely around 1500).

Now that you've done these you'll need to put your turbo/sc on. The bonus of a SC is that you won't need to play with your exaust manifold, but for more power a SC will/might cost you more.
Eitherway a system like either will cost you minimum 2500 for a good job.
You'd be lucky if you got 3500 though for that sort of thing.
Then you'll need to upgrade your injectors to deal with it... Don't know the cost of these unfortunately but expect a bit more, as well as your fuel pump likely.

After all this, you'd be pretty lucky for the standard ECU to be running nicely, so you'll need a piggy back system or something of that kind to keep it running.

Once you've done this... Well, yeah, you're looking at big costs anyway, and it doesn't add there.

You'll at least want to think about upgrading the brakes due to the new weight of all the parts on front and suspension too probably.

You'll need to upgrade rims with the new brakes to they fit as well. All up you're looking at at least 4000 for that, unless you get something like other manufacturer brakes, 2nd hand brakes etc.

And btw. These are only some of the things that you'll need to worry about. It's just the way it is. Then it's a matter of keeping the car road legal at the same time.

The problem is that when doing a turbo upgrade on one of these cars you could probably get another 50-60HP maybe up to 100hp out of them without too much risk standard by bolting on, but that's limitted to that until you upgrade the engine. Otherwise you run the risk of wearing it out way before it's time.

And the gear box... Chances are you'll need to custom jig that up to your car.
My personal recommendation is to attach a Getrag gearbox, but once you do that, your Diff will need changing too, or you could end up having a top speed of 150 and dodgy gear ratios.

Oh yeah, a second hand getrag will set you back at least 3500. A brand new one will set you back at least 7000.

There's the matter of the clutch as well by the way, if it be a push or a pull type. ^_~

Not worth it in the end. You want a quick car for the price of that BMW? Japanese car is probably the easiest way to go.

Post 17

... and chances are it'll end up around a tree.

Post 18

My rec is to get this car if you're serious and do it VIP style. Big fat deep dish rims, slammed, lots of camber, flares and very smooth with a kick ass sound system.
And paint it black.
You'll spend less.

Post 19

ill stick with my commo :)

Post 20

wow, seems like a lot of effort for not much reward, imho.

Hitokiri seems to know what he is talking about, and with all those figures he's spitting out you'll be up for a small fortune.

For a 92' model + all the extras you'd be better off investing into something with all of them already on there?
Just ask cow, he'll tell you to get a ghey supra or something :)

But good luck if you do get the BMW :)

Post 21

Get a Cressida (Chaser) dump a V6 turbo or V8 in it for about "0-11000 all up and you'd be done, the V8's even more fuel efficient than the V6 as its a newer design. Thats basically what im planning on doing with my Cressy, just dump a Crown V8 and a 5 speed-auto transmission in it and thats it, more power and more fuel efficency and it could drag off pretty much anything

Although you could then go and rice it with some body work, but its an awesome car and with the stock look you wouldn't get pulled over as much.

Post 22

i'm looking for a 1.6L 8 or 16 Valve Suzuki Vitara engine for my Sierra.. :)

Post 23

Quote from hawkeye:

HEY! Supra's are okay. Besides as of today I got NOS... Seriously. ^_~ It's NOS injector cleaner, and the engine idles nicer now.

But just to make another statement... If you REALLY want to, and there are people out there in similar boats, then go for it. Nobody's stopping you, and it's less crazy then making a camry rearwheel drive with a v8.

But then, to get into modding cars, you have to be at least a BIT crazy. ^o^

Post 24

lol camry, sif call a cressida a camry. It may look similar but a cressida is one of the few decent rear wheel drive cars ever made. not to mention its effectively a Lexus

Post 25

Didn't call a cressida a camry. ^_^'

Just said, converting a BMW that much is less crazy then converting a camry to rear wheel drive with a V8.

Post 26

But no one mention converting a camry, plus it would be impossible to convert a camry to rear wheel drive and have it pass engineering/safety tests

Post 27

What? The Cressida's are all rear-wheel drive, they never made a front driver. All the Toyota enthusiasts bag the crap out of Avalon's.
Don't mention the "A" word on www.toyotacressida.com or you'll cop an earfull

[Image: http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/Content/Webphotos/888/AM/AM132-888-01.jpg]

I admit the car does have conservative styling, the daskboard is typically Toyota bland and 99% of people who bought them were grandpas, but look at the build quality, the power of its DOHC 3L in-line six (or VVT-i V8 ), the quality Lexus transmition (which is still in use in Lexus' today) and you'll notice what the car is like underneeth.
When you consider it's; well built, powerful, economic, features list, build quality, quietness and has cheap insurance how can you go wrong? It's not for everyone, but it's a damm fine car none the less.

Post 28

I mentioned the camry in passing. ~_~ Besides, I'm a huge Toyota fan, and I wouldn't compare a camry to a cresida anyway.

Post 30

ok.... well im not lookin to go insain... just make it a nice-er Beamer to drive.

I see NO mods, nor is a standard "Crumpledoor" very safe on a European Standard! they are Light on the steering an as this fourm has seen DANGEROUS with young drivers (Does this mean u?), simply new Holdens are shit, plastic, crap to drive, n why would u trade-in such a Luxurious Vehicle? for a gocart with a large body kit? oh... cause u wanna join the commodore club....???

The E36's have 6cly's (timing chain) as the E30's mostly have the 4's with a timing belt (bad news for a turbo)
smiddy: hes in adelaide if anyone was wondering
Hmmm good guess.... id like to know where u got that info, id say your informies would be still wondering, cause if u remember the post about the accident then u would have come to the conclusion that im in Darwin..... good try none the less

yeah the insurance is a large issue, but worth it....!!!

one thing, im not tyin to make a 8sec car, just nice at the right time. almost like a couch with wheels.... oh n cruise control :)
BurkynYurkyn: ... and chances are it'll end up around a tree.
nope... not happenin.... not that stupid, there's a time and a place. lets hope with that attitude we wont see your commo in such a position.
Flammable: ill stick with my commo
lol... another lost soul....

cool.... cool....well thanks for the info Hitokiri Kensuke, but yeah will see what happens... just all in the makin atm, but want to get that Beamer, hmmmm if only i could find somethin close too that in a Coupe that would be nice....

but realy.... why would u even touch a commo when there are the XR6's n 8's??

But i say EURO!! ne day, jap cars can be quick, loud n good lookin, but death traps too... as i was just in a pretty bad smash i like the safety aspect, cause its not always u, its other drivers u have to worry about mostly..... (as i see everyday when i look at my left arm n stomach, and all the fun hospital visits that follow)

I just rekon if ya gonna kill ur self in a car do it on your OWN....

ne way... will see how this all pans out, maybe can be done maybe not.... may find somethin else  will keep the fourm updated..

Post 31

BMW's are real cars ;)

Post 32

just one small thing!

i don't own a commonwhore.. never would.

Post 33

commonwhores and falcoons, steer clear from them. And dont flame saying XY's etc are good for 2 reasons:

a) I go for holden
b) It's cheating when almost every car they ever made has been called the same thing

Post 34

my uncle has a new BMW... very nice.. won't let me drive it :(

Post 35

Timing belts and timing chains are a subject that we probably should't look at. Both have their possitives, both have their negatives. Generally speaking though. Neither is 'weaker' or 'stronger' then the other.

For example, SR20 is chain driven and can handle up to 750HP at the wheels. (as far as it's been tested).

a 3S-GTE is belt driven and can handle the same power.

what model?

like the M3 and the M5 myself ;)

Post 37

i'll have to find out.. it's a 2002/2003 plate.. but i don't know what model..

Post 38

I should just say. Apparently there's an MR2 running a 3S-GTE with 900PS in Malaysia. (about 900 Horse power at the fly wheel). Go the 'yota!
