Suggestion for upcoming DGA Events

I think that the DGA needs some sort of whiteboard or something for broadcasting what non DGA hosted games are being played by who on what IP's. I reckon if this happened we could get even more game variety going at DGA events. There have been a couple of times I have wanted to play massive diablo parties, but its not really ethical and efficient to ask EVERYBODY if they want to play if you know what I'm saying. Other times I have wanted to play some of the older titles that people might want to play as well and again the same sort of thing. Its not until after the DGA on these forums that I find out I missed out on some game I wanted to play so badly.

Theres only so much fun you can have with a few of your friends in a game. Strangers add unpredictability and fun. Please don't flame me...

another thing is i loved that bloody projector thing
it was very informative
telling us the number count and other things
we coudl have server ips and shit being posted on ther maybe
but anyway i woudl liek to see that more often

Post 3

i did have the whiteboard there.. nobody seemed to want to use it.

if there's too much info on the projector it takes forever to get back to the server ip... etc.

Post 4

Perhaps we'll try to have the projector hooked up to a laptop or one of the DGA servers permenantly that we'll update throughout the LAN with new information.

Something else I've been wanting to organise for quite some time is a simple PA system (a stereo with mic would do) for important announcements.

Post 5

....Such as "Ladies and gentlemen, rec has entered/left the building"......

you know i love you rec.

Post 6

there was also an irc server running all evo, which is as good a place as any to hang out when you're not playing a game, and looking for other people who are also bored.

Post 7

Milenko has the right idea, someone remind me again why he's not an admin? ;)

Post 8

PA??? Isn't that what EOS is for???

Post 9

Only when he's drunk, which makes keeping him on standby quite expensive after 24-72 hours. ;)

Post 10

Nah man, Lord Eater is maintanance free.
He looks after himself in that dept. :P

But seeing him stand upon two of those plastic chairs after a few healthy brews, made me worried. I think i heard one of em groan :P

Post 11

Evo the projector was great, normal DGA's the venue is too small so thats out the door atm.

PA system, echo's.. We are trying different things atm in that department.

ATM however EOS is our best bet.

Only problem with leaving the projector on (when it's not hired) is the bulb life.. i just replaced the one in the projector i had at EVO... $800 :(

Post 13

wat about aquiring a megaphone

Im sure the school would have one, any chance we could borry it at the dga's

but yeah, I think a web server displaying info to the gamers would be a good idea

and some means of getting messagessent to the server would also be a good idea

ie, please put on info page.... thisgame on now between 1400 to 1500, anyone want to play

Post 14

and can people bring thier own switch and server,

ie If ICDU were to aquire a gigabit switch, could its members use it on thier table and setup their own ftp and games server on it?

obviously setup in accordance with the dga admins guidelines

PM me some more specific details, and I can see what I can organise for that REC.

Post 16

Well I for one had trouble hearing the admins.

Post 18

Actually I agree, I noticed it more so this time. Eater has a loud voice but its really deep so its actually hardish to hear his voice.

He was great help to me as a PA though :D

Post 19

ok Sper0 you can shout, I am sure your voice will cut through the din.

Couldn't understand shit from fifteen feet away :)

Post 21

Two white boards, one for games and the other for FTP and IRC and the like.

Eddited for spelling, blah

Yeah and would have been like that with any announcment system we used.. The venue was huge and echo was bigger.

We are working on ways to get announcments across so yeah, for now that is all :)

Post 23

It was alright the few times that Unseen stood in the middle and shouted what Eater or another admin had already said..

But it was hard to hear up the end where we were sitting :| Most of us moved closer to hear... and by that time the message had already been said..

Post 24

Precisely. Even the stuff I COULD understand didn't help much, since I missed half the announcement by the time I got my headphones off and ears retuned.

Post 25

Our area would all take off their headphones off, look intently at EoS, and then when he finished announcing everyone would simultaneously ask the person next to them "What was that?" "I dunno". And then return to gaming.

We usually got the gyst of it though, like 'eat', 'pizza', 'comp', and 'go home'.

And here I am almost sitting next to him and I still do that :P

Post 27

why dont we just setup icq or something

teamspeak for anouncments, http to view info

we have all we need right in front of us

Post 28

irc is better for that sort of thing over icq I think

Post 29

irc was handy though hardly anyone was using it/knew about it

Post 30

I only realised there was an IRC server because I saw lani on IRC and began scanning the network for an IP with ports 6666-6669 open.

You know you used to be an IRC junkie when you have the exact port numbers down cold.

Post 31

Well given there was an irc server up (no i had no idea there was one), next dga i'll use it - irc is good for mass spammage :P

Post 32

I was unaware of the IRC server myself, I reckon it should have been made more public, like mentioned on entry, and on the projector. 8)

Post 33

well considering it was being run by paladin //crimson ... and not DGA, its not surprising that it wasn't mentioned.

Ohh...

Post 35

EOS is good usually at normal DGA events, but it was horrible in Foskey Pavilion cos it was so open.

EOS is good for announcements but I think using him for EVERY announcement would kinda suck. It needs to be visually up... maybe a laptop/projector set up ON TOP of the servers and shining directly behind the servers would use minimal space? Just a thought... Its kinda a care/lazy factor with most people if the list is over the computer... if its actually up on a whiteboard or somethign, you just look up and its there and its broadcasted...

Post 36

IMO, the best option would be through ICQ or IRC.

I knew there was a whiteboard, but was always too lazy to go to it and write down server addresses.

I didnt know the IRC server existed until the second last night. Messages (spam) through irc or icq would be the easiest.

However i enjoyed eater's method the best :)

Cow

Post 37

whats the point of ICQ if i'm in the middle of a game mucking about and there's an announcement.. definately wont see it.

just need a bright red light at each end of the building to come on before the announcement.. or like the airport.. *ding dong ding* .................

Post 38

the announcement needs to be immediately and instantaneously attention grabbing, a whiteboard that people periodically glance at won't cut it for things that need immediate attention.

basically, you want a loud speaker/pa system of some sorts, failing that, a method for message delivery that will forcibly foreground itself on a users computer to display the message; problem with that being - not every game is alt-tab friendly, and more than a few are liable to crash in a screaming fit.

Post 39

Simple.

You need a brief blast of a few seconds from a loud siren - that will get everyones attention, even those in headphones. Then you use a loudspeaker, make the announcement, and get one with gaming.

Post 40

after cleaning your underpants :D

Post 41

Do you mock the fortitude of the average gamer? ;)

Post 42

isn't the average age at one of these things about 13 now? need to have a bunch of nappies on hand for them to change into

Post 43

I still like the idea of icq over LAN. Be a good way to ask people quickly if they would like to join a particular game instead of running around all over the place :) Could be fun. icdu ran an icq server at a dga a while ago and it was pretty handy.

Post 44

I'll see what can be arrange regarding the LAN IRC server. Many other LANs around the country run them quite successfully.

Post 45

As per OD comments Sponge or I shall announce all important messages at all DGA events with any or all of the following:

1. Loud Car Horn sounding.
2. Sqeezing Ebolas cats nuts for a short time.
3. Short Blast from a Police Siren.
4. Long Blast from Police Siren.
5. One round discharge from a glock.
6. One to fifteen rounds discharged from glock.
7. One round discharged from shottie.
8. Several rounds discharged from shottie.

And If you still don't hear us then,

Sqeezing Ebolas cats nuts for a long time, eww Sponge can do this one.

Post 46

Does that mean Ebola has nuts like a cats or he has a cat that he is bringing along that you are going to sqeeze :?:

Post 47

He;s been castrated.

Post 48

I want a website thingy with all the official announcements and server ips. Also a section where users can add the game they are running and the ip. Also throw a few sponsors names on the page and then get people to save it as active wallpaper thingo :)

Post 49

you know, thats such a good idea i already had a web based game search engine running. shame nobody knew about it ;)

Post 50

paladin.. you've got everything and nobody knows anything about it.

I had that running.

That is what the admins used to log everyone into the Event.

Again shame noone knew about it.

But you can for the next DGA.

http://realm/DGA/index.htm

Try that out at the next lan and see if that answers all your questions.

true, mostly because my offer of servers fell on deaf ears ;)
