My CPU, an AMD 2800+ is running very hot (normal temp 65)

Since I have heard that AMD CPU cooling is not the best I am looking at getting this:

CoolerMaster Aero 7+ Blower for Socket A

What have other people brought to cool down AMD CPU's? Has it worked? And whats recommended?

my file server runs at 60 degrees idle, its running 24/7 and hasnt skipped a beat, its a XP2000. Also my main pc is a XP3200 and runs at 70 full load,

65 isnt that hot for an AMD.
I have a 2800+ and with the SLK-9000u, it idles at about 45 degrees in the midday sun.

65 is idle. 75-80 when I do something in a fully airconditioned room.

I would check the HSF has a thermal pad or thermal grease first, as if you are using standard HSF it shouldn't get that high under load with correct thermal conductivity between HSF and CPU.

yeah, what morbeous said. My 2000XP runs in the low 40s idle with a stock hsf/fan in normal Darwin weather

Um those temps are very abnormal. Not high enough to be detrimental to your system but abnormal none the less. My 3200+ ran at 47 at idle and 55 full load with the stock cooler in darwin. I've set my BIOS to shut off the comp when it hits 70. Now I'm in Perth its more like 42/43 full load and 36/37 idle with a gigabyte 3D cooler.

Personally I think they sound a little hot but according to AMD the XP's are safe up to 95 degrees or something.

dude get the CoolerMaster Aero 7 Lite apparently its much cheaper (~$29) and performs better than the 7+!!

Just the method of design mainly, Azreal.
In a nutshell, AMD are faster, hotter and in some peoples views, more unstable.
Pentiums are cooler, more stable but these days, are just as fast.

If u want top notch H/Sink get the following Thermalright SLK 947U, makes my 2600+ max load temp bout 48-50 (no aircon) and overclocked (200 FSB 2300 Mhz) max load temp 55-58. Here a link for those of you who can't use google.

i run a good old trusty volcano 7+ on my 2600, runs at 36 degrees in winter :)

too hot lani, get a good thermal paste and good heatsink, careful but cause some are quite loud. good luck.

azreal its cos amd have a higher internal clock speed therefore run hotter,

explain higher internal clock speeds... i thought pentiums had a higher clock speed i.e 3000+ = 2.17ghz whereas P4 3Ghz = 3Ghz

and the 2700+ has the same clock speed as the 3000+ but less cache.. what does cache do?

cache is temporary storage located very close to the cpu. when the cpu fetches an instruction from main memory, or fetches data, it tries to guess what will be needed next and grab some of that at the same time, and store it in cache. that way if the next piece of data or instruction IS in the cache, its much faster to execute than it is to go and fetch it from main memory again.

think of it like this, you go and get a coke from the fridge, but you think you may want a slice of cake or a piece of fruit with it, so you take it back with you and leave it just outside your door, and take your coke in. if you decide you want that slice of cake, you only have to get it from your door, rather than going all the way back to the fridge again.

Back on subject please.

The question was never about the CPU temp.

I would like recommendations for purchasing of AMD XP+ CPU Heatsink & fan.

I use a Volcano 9, big heavy copper heatsink, and a very strong fan. If I was living down south the fan would annoy me, but up here, my ceiling fan makes more noise.

Non aircon room 30c, case temp 32c, CPU (load) 54c.
Greek School aircon CPU(load) 30c, :lol: freezing in there.

The oft told tail of AMDs running hotter comes from the Athlon Thunderbird days, now the P4 Prescott has the title.

so in the temp are we talking about the socket temp or the diode temp. coz the diode will b hotter

I have an Aero 7+, at min speed its 21Db (inaudable) and keeps my temp at about 49-54

At max speed I think its about 29 Db (slight whiring in the backround) and drops the temps down to about 39-45

I highly recomend this product and any other sideways fan coolers.

Lani ive heard this one is excellent, especially for hot running athlons.
i use a volcano 11+ and im not happy with it. only brings it down like 4-5 degrees. this one though ive heard can bring it down by at least 10 - 15 degrees

If your volcano 11 is only lowering temps by that much, you have obvioulsy put it on wrong. A correctly applied stock cooler can keep temps lower then that.

How much thermal grease/Artic Silver did you use? is the heatsink mounted squarley on the die, did you touch the underside of the heatsink before mounting?

im not touching that fukka. last time i touched it that fukka cost me a shitload. and it lowered it 4 - 5 degrees lower than the correctly applied stock cooler. if ur volenteering to remount my heatsink go for it. i still hate the thermaltake though. and i didnt put it on computers for you did. so ive no idea what they put on

The gigabyte 3D cooler I got has my 3200+ at 37/38 at idle and 40/41 at full load with 27 case air temps

they wouldnt have used thermal paste at all, just the stock crappy glug that comes with it. this would be your problem.

lol. im scared to take it off. the socket at room temp with the fan at 4800rpm (high) is about 43 - 48 degrees.
