yeh so talking to burk, and he has somehow convinced me to head up to darwin again. so let's all make use of cow while his buying impulses are high.

need to find someone who will put up with me for a few nights...say January 18/19/20/21/22/23. i'm more than happy to pay for whatever, prefer to stay with gamers that i know.

will also need to be lent a monitor for the evo period.

if i can organise everything, and find some well priced tickets, i may very well make the trip up. going overseas next month so i'm not 100% sure about darwin, mainly due to money.

oh, and if anyone sees cheap tickers from either canberra to darwin, or sydney to darwin, post here or tell me. best i've found so far is about $530 return with qantas.

Post 2

gooooooooooooooooo cow!

Post 3

We shall be honured to be in the presence of teh bouvine once again :)

Post 4

love to have you hear again cow
:)

Post 5

Yep I'm making my annual migration back home in a couple weeks too.

$530 with Qantas, I'd seriously think about snapping those up ASAP considering peak load on flights usually, and it's QANTAS too which I prefer to fly on.

Post 6

Sweet
Anyone looking to come to evo5 in late January 2005 is encouraged to make the journey. So save your money and get in touch with friends to secure accommodation and come on up for the mighty evo5.

Post 7

OK, while we are on this topic, I have somewhere to stay when I come up, but I need a 17" monitor when I get there.....want to avoid having to buy one from cashies for the sake of 2 weeks.

So if anyone has got a spare, it would be much appreciated.

Post 8

Beggers cant be Choosers

Post 9

Wrath, Im sure you could use my dads....:P

Post 10

Seats on sale until midnight Monday 8 November 2004 (Sydney time) or until sold out.

Hurry - seats are limited.

Darwin to:

Brisbane from "69
Melbourne from "83
Alice Springs from "90
Sydney from "91
Adelaide from $226
Perth from $243
Cairns from $271

These internet only, one way specials are valid for travel from Tuesday 7 December 2004 until Saturday 26 February 2005.

Virgin may throw something cheaper back later today.. there is only special from Sydney not canberra.

Post 21

for some reason it would be cheaper to book to syd then a flight to canberra.

Costing me $600 return from Darwin to Canberra start of december

Post 22

it's a lot cheaper.. because if you are flying to canberra, the plane goes to sydney, then to canberra.. direct flights are always cheaper.

Post 23

and I fly qantas and virgin blows....

Post 24

not all virgins blow kurt.

Post 25

yes but virgin AIRLINEs, is crappy. I dont like it.

Post 26

Some virgins blow...but that really depends how hard you slap em.

Post 27

I've already had a good trawl through 14 days worth of flights Canberra-Darwin return w/stopovers. The one cow picked out with Qantas seems to be the cheapest still, and personally I'd only ever fly with Qantas. So cow better pick that flight out quick, because the cheapest I got was $601 although this was one via Melbourne on a 737-800 and dash8 at canberra return via sydney on shitcraft.

Post 28

how many of you guys are coming for EVO?

Post 29

Just a note for those who are thinking of coming up for evo, Book NOW. Peak time about there and flights are more expensive as flights sell seats.

Also it probably would help if we could get a confirmed date for evo.

Post 30

i'm gonna book tickets this afternoon. fly in night of the 19th, depart morning (00:00) or the 26th. $371 sydney return

as jay said, a confirmation of evo would be great, considering that's half the reason i'm up there.

Post 31

Cow, Jay, all other weary travellers..

I have just spoken to Foskey Pavillion and we are confirmed for 21st - 23rd January.

Post 32

yay...
is that the same place as the last awesome evo?
that was the wickedest time...
my friend went to noosa to live on the day of the start of the evo...

Post 33

yes, same venue as last Australia Day.. i was there for most of it.. but i got My Citizenship on Australia Day.. haha

Post 34

w00t....I am booking tickets for the 18th - 31st of Jan in 2 weeks

Post 35

And Virgin did it again! haha

Darwin to:

Brisbane
"49*

Sydney
"49*

Melbourne
"69*

Adelaide
"99*^

I much prefer flying Virgin actually.. i don't like eating on a plane... it makes me sick.

Post 36

w00tage...I just booked my tickets this afternoon - $545 return with QANTAS....I'll be arriving in Darwin on the 16th and staying until the 31st, so see you all at Evo :D

Post 37

Hope you have somewhere to stay :P

Post 38

no, the last awesome evo was at Darwin High

What was wrong with the Foskey ??

Besides the table legs collapsing on 2 people. And some technical issues we encoutered in set up ..

What were your problems with it??

Post 40

Just a note I have two monitors people can borrow

One is a 17inch and the other is a 19inch let me know if you want to borrow them

Post 41

Dibs on the 19 if thats cool Sper0 :D

Post 42

I thought Darwin High was too bright. At least with foskey we can reduce the amount of natural light entering the building

Post 43

Will try and make it back to Darwin for EVO5.... Depends on how much cashew i have in the piggy bank.... cheapest flights i found are from Cairns to Darwin via Brisbane and even then i need to get a bus up to cairns from Townsville and back :(

But I will probably need a monitor but I will let you guys know when i get the details...

I trust i will be able to stay at either "The Eaters Cave" or "teh house 'o 3 pimps" as both of these establishments have a 5 star rating and come complete with a fully stocked bar and lounge area...

:D

Post 44

are you wanting to sell ne of those monitors?

Indeed my hairy friend. if you dont come i will be most unhappy :)

Post 46

im confused :S

Post 47

Post 48

Legendary...I owe you one Amanda ;)

Post 49

And the power box ****ing exploding, and the lack of tourneys, and the lack of promised projectors, and the fact that there weren't any good new games out at the time. (I won't hold the last point against anyone :)

Post 51

I'd actually have to agree with SN about the last awesome evo being at DHS. The venue wasn't perfect (lighting as Longtom said - I still preferred it to the Foskey Pavilion though) but the actual gaming was outstanding.

Post 52

HAHAHA Stonefish .. I remember that .. Sponge was mr firefighter from what I remember oh and lataf I think :) ..

Power box was on fire nicely.

I had 1 projector going :) sure we can organise more this time :) big venue ..

Will try and secure some Xbox's for the console gamers. ;) more on this later.

Only thing I hate about foskey and and DHS is there is nothing in the near proximity. 10mins drive (depending on speed) to nearest food. OR more so depending on what you want ..

Post 53

That fried Power box was hilarious....All I smelt was burning silicon...and as I';d had an issue earlier with my mobo being gay...I freaked :p And Im guessing a lot other people did judging by how many sidepanels came off before everyone realised what was happening :p

Post 54

burning silicon.... in a powerbox??

and to my recollection it was just a loose plug causing an arc... no frying

just some slight plastic charring

Post 55

It smelt like burning silicon...whether it was or not is a different matter :p

Team Alice will probably be in Darwin around that time once more. Don't know if we'll actually attend the LAN part, since the last one was unanimously voted as complete and utter crap by all 10 of us. If I'm there, so will my modded Xbox be.

A projector doesn't even count as existing if all it does it run powerpoint. Needs consoles :)

(And what the **** is a sidepanel? :)

Post 57

yeah, well if people bring consoles. if you don't like evo, you don't have to come..

hehehe.

Well with new sponsorship from projection plus we should be better :) ..

Just need to run some things through the committee and exec before anything is set in concrete.

Post 59

with the sponsorship from (insert lots of places here) evo is going to go off.

Post 60

woooo what is it :) .. oh wait :p

Post 61

i will announce sponsorships when they are final and when the committee agrees :P

Post 62

If going to Darwin Party Hire dont get the dodgy tables :)

Post 63

i just want internet to be at dga and evo!
that would roxor my boxor...
at the bits and bytes evo there was internet, cant you get a sponsor from say, internode and get a hook directly into the fibre for real fun?
If not dont worry

Post 64

I'll be willing to share my dial-up if anyone can find a phone port at foskey:)

Post 65

guys, it's not as simple as that.. but be assured, i'm doing everything in my power. we will probably be using my adsl modem if we do have a connection.

Post 66

is the 13 in your nick related to your age in any way? 'hook directly into the fibre' indeed. we've had dga's in the past with shared internet (back at the bridge club), it's not much use for anything beyond instant messengers.

Post 67

having the internet at the LAN would probably be useful for people who end up having unexpected problems with steam. eg. Offline more not working, files need validating

that's probably the only reason to have internet at DGA, because steam may want it

and IM, which i think we need some sort of mini-forum on the DGA's intranet. or a chat room? I'd be useful. The only problem would be registrating ur user name and password, so people can't body snatch

Post 68

Hey all, if wireless was able to get connected over to evo you would be able to connect in to either DarwinWireless's IRC then there would be no need for the internet for chatting, otherwise someone could setup a small linux box with a hybrid IRC server installed

just some thoughts

Cheers
Rip

Post 69

If we had net though, just use MSN or whatever

Post 70

The reality of having internet at a lan... is that there isn't enough bandwidth to do anything, at all, with 200 people you'd be lucky to have enough to connect to msn.

Post 71

and the modem would get a hammering

Post 72

Isn't there already an IRC server being run at DGA events?
What would be better anyways would be an IM server of that program that allows you to see what games people are playing and allows you to join them and whatnot... that would rule...
The internet thing wouldn't be too bad for those who need to access steam to get into offline mode maybe if they set it up so that you had to physically move to a certain switch to do what you need and then move it wouldn't be so bad...

Post 73

I'm not too sure about DGA running IRC servers at their events, I have not have the opp to be at a DGA or EVO events yet as everytime one has been on somthing else has come up :( but this coming EVO will be diffrent ;)

Cheers
Rip

Post 74

there has been irc servers at various dgas, they never get much attention. there was one at last evo, it maxed out at about eight users.

Post 75

my skewl hooks directly into the fibre. Pity we dont got cable in darwing.

And the "13" was set up last year when i was 13...

Post 76

no ur school doesnt hook up via fibre.
At most it has a fibre connection to the satalite dish (4Mbit), provided by LATIS, hich will be on the roof of ur school. There is know way the government would spent money on a fibre net connection for any territory school (except h possibility of the uni haveing one).

Post 77

What DOES the uni have...cause I have hit about 1 meg/second there....

Post 78

probably 16 mbit

2mb/s

Post 79

Quote from Wrathlon:
What DOES the uni have...cause I have hit about 1 meg/second there.... I assume you are referring to CDU?

You would notice though that after a few seconds it will drop dramatically.
After the speed stops varying I usually see it rest at about 250-350k/sec when I dl at the uni.

Post 80

Thats during the day, but when I was living on the campus, at night the bandwidth would pick up, and thats the sort of speeds I used to get...never went under 600k/s

Post 81

we had a mini forum, we've had IRC.. both maxed out at less than half a dozen users.

Post 82

If my memory is correct, the uni has an OC3 connection

which is a cluster of 3 T1 connections...

but I'm not sure

Post 83

t1's are american. australia doesn't have them.

and fyi, t1 = 1.544Mbps
oc3 = 155Mbps.

Post 84

Australia has E1... same shit, different name.

Post 85

e1 is 2.048Mbps

Post 86

ok, similar shit, different name :P

Post 87

oh and before i forget; oc = optical carrier. t/eX = copper.

Post 88

so yeah dga32 was good.

Post 89

Isn't there an offline version of ICQ or something that we could use?

Post 90

ICQ Corp ..

yes there is .. its used on Darwin Wireless.

Post 91

CDU has a 14 Mb connection through Optus, Soon to have a much fatter pipe ( 155Mb - oc3 ) through telstra ( connecting Darwin-Alice- to Adelaide AARNET). But not all 155 Mb will be available.

Post 92

Just a thought - for instant messaging similar to ICQ why dont ya install a Jabber server, We just got one setup on the wireless network works a treat -

there are several clients that work on the jabber server like trillian and Exodus etc...

Just a though

Cheers
Rip

Post 93

suggested months ago, nothing done about it.

Post 94

we will investigate an instant messaging solution for EVO. There is a meeting coming up, i will bring it up.

Post 95

and you know as soon as management starts using words like 'investigate' and 'solution', nothing will ever happen :)

Post 96

well if i say i'll make it happen.. and it doesn't.. i'll get castrated.

at the meeting, we'll find someone willing to get it working and get them to do it :P

Post 97

Darwin Wireless has expressed an interest to demo thier connection and equipment at Evo5, still in the process of working out if we can beg controlled internet throught that connection

Post 98

Quote from Burk:

don't find someone willing, find someone capable.

Post 99

bah, willing and capable.

just shush.

Post 100

i had a brief jab at jabber (heehee) a while ago.

the (free) servers all either a) run on linux, or b) run in windows, but only have a command based interface with which to run the server. so i gave up on that one. could only sort of get it working on the home network.

the clients are easy as piss though - tons of quality jabber-compatible IMs out there.
