excellent article, they've been on about a cs pro mod forever and nobody could be arsed to do anything, but this time I believe it will definately be worthwhile. This is EXACTLY what source needs.

Quote:
Essentials:

Models:
-Everything from 1.6 needs to be ported to HL2, with the same skins, and textures.

-New models need to be developed off of the old ones that are high definition and take advantage of the source engine. Textures and skins should be similar.

-Players need to be able to switch on/off high def models at will through a GUI.
totally agree with this. If you've ever seen pro q3/ut players play, they have their graphics settings tuned so stupidly low, in order to make their opponents/important items look more contrasted against the rest of the map. However, everyone else only sees what their configs give them when they watch these demos, and at big events the spectators see the best graphics the game can offer on the big screens.
Quote:
Animations:

-Rag doll = bye-bye. It’s boring and useless. No one cares about dynamic body movement when there trying to focus on winning "00,000. Besides, Source looks good enough that the average person won’t even notice the absence of the new physics and rag doll animations.

-1.6 animations need to be restored. These are great animations that would look good in any next generation game. They are very stiff but real; it adds to the intensity of the game, and it makes the game play fast and solid. They are not over-animated as you see in a lot of new games today.

sort of agree with this, in the sense that the current source ragdoll animations look retarded, especially when you headshot someone. Instead of just taking all the ragdoll animations out though and replacing them with the old ones though, I think it would be better if they were changed to look MORE like the classic 1.6 animations, but still powered by ragdoll phyiscs. So, if you headshotted someone, they still fly back 1.6 style, but if you shoot them from the side they don't do a backflip perpendicular to the point that you hit them like what happens in 1.6.
Quote:
GUI:

-An intuitive GUI should be designed, so that players and event organizers can access these options with ease.

Net Code:

-Tweak it for competitive play. Right now with Steam it is made so that people with high latency/dial-up still have a chance. Get rid of all the ping balance factors and make it broadband only.
I agree with both of those

Quote:
Sound:

-Just port over all the original sounds, they are good enough.
I don't agree on this, I think a lot of the original sounds could be made better, especially the mp5. It's always sounded to me like it's shooting rubber bullets.

Quote:
Maps:

All the CAL maps will need to be ported over with new high definition textures. Valve massacred a lot of the league maps (just look at Dust 2). Probably the easiest way to do this would be to import the existing 1.6 maps into Hammer, then re-skin them for the pro-mod.

yeah I agree with this, maybe do a bit of a graphical update to the core of the map, eg. add more polys, but aside from that I think the maps should be left 1.6 style.

Quote:
-Barrels, cars, tires, buckets, cans, etc. Get rid of it all. The reason Counter-Strike is fun is because it has fast paced CLEAN maps, with nothing to move or get in the way.
yeeeeah, I agree on this for a pro mod, but the stuff lying around the map is still cool for pub servers :)

Post 3

Nah, leave the new CS alone, cept add more player models.
People complained about the major update b6.1 to b6.5, then they got used to it.
I'm also in support of the new dust2, using the barrels to your advantage is a great assest as CTs

Post 4

if you dont liek it quit whinging and play CS 1.6, CSS is just a bit of fun, my only sinlge bitch is physics objects being weird and not being able to jump over then and shite, all the collision meshs are munted for em

Post 5

1.6 is crap compared to CZ ..

Its called a pro MOD .. not for public play ..

read the article.

Post 6

I don't think they should fly back 1.6 style. I like having a bit of realism in that respect and source's headshot animation provided that.

Post 7

The idea about changing graphics to make the oponent more visable is a bit weird for me. I would have thought that was a form of cheating. However that's just my opinion, I like to play games the way they were designed to look. Which is probably why I aren't that good at competition CS

Post 8

This mod, whether made or not .. Wont be about public play .. It would most probably be used for CPL, CAL, WCG, IHS etc etc .. there is no way this would be implemented into a public area.

Post 9

then how do you practise for it :O

Post 10

you would practise by specifically playing it ..

Post 11

what happened to this post I thought it was quite intersting or did people fall inito playing source ?

Post 12

hahahaha must be xmas i wa slooking at when ppl joined and thought wow this is old stuff; really only yesterday.. phew. older you get the slower you get i guess> :)
I think its an awesome idea but boy to set up new game which is virtually what they are talking about would cost heaps or set up as a syndicate and who ever wants to add funds can do so - could probably get a lot of ppl and then fund some development of it all
I would be in on that so long as valve couldn`t take it it off you. TM and everything

it's not really in cs, I mean whatever you do you can't make cs look like this:

[Image: http://www.users.on.net/~caraher/pics/screenshots/cooller.jpg]
which is what quake 3 looks like to cooller, probably the best q3 player in the world.

the reason I agree with the whole pro mod thing is that games with real competitions, such as real sports and other games like billiards, chess, etc. where people play very competitively for prizes (like CS has become) very rarely have updates and changes made to them. If valve want to change CS every few months, put awp delays in, change the models, do the whole source thing, then they can and it's probably a good idea to do so in order to keep the general population of CS interested in the game. What people are getting fussed about now is the fact that source has so many changes (aside from it's core concept) that it barely resembles 1.6. Graphically, this is good, because source looks a million times better than 1.6. But the real CS players are getting sick of having to adjust again and again to whatever valve wants to change in their steam updates. The people who are for the pro mod are the ones that want to see 1.6 on the source engine, not counter-strike source.

I guess it all depends on wether or not valve are going to keep tuning source to make it at least as competitively viable as 1.6 was, or if they are just going to leave it like the pro mod people say they are.

Post 14

so basically its going to be cs 1.6. WTF :|

tell me why did we bother getting hl2 if there going to revert back to most of the old shit.

Post 15

Did you read any of this thread before you posted that?

Post 16

no

Post 17

SIMPLE EXPLANATION~
CS S is dodgy atm wif stuffed hitboxes and pro players are used to the old style of gameplay and CS S is totally different... so we dont want to adapt to the new style. therefore WE WANT 1.6/CZ style ON SOURCE ENGINE g0t it??? and to those ppl that said GO BACK TO PLAYING 1.6/CZ~ NO! because mentioned in the article the sponsors and stuff are falling back and we want a very good game that will be sponsored alot

Post 18

Welcome to GU :)

must admit though Source seems alot smoother then when it was first released

Post 19

We're over it now :p

Post 20

I quite like source now. Some of the weapons are completely unbalanced (M3 shotgun... Across a large expanse in Piranesi and I get headshotted by an M3 while the guy was jumping... 112dmg... wtf!?)

Personally I don't want a 1.6 for CS:S. I do want them to tweak and adjust a few things. I agree about the shit lying around the maps but ragdolls are fine by me and the textures, skins and sounds are all good.

Post 21

they are just whingers in other words? whats the matter? something change? and your too "leet" to play a new enigine?

CS:S hitboxes are ****ed? when have they ever NOT been ****ed. i dont know if you ever played cs before but they are, have always and will always be dodgy. play the new game and get over it.

thats not to anyone in particular. just people that wanna play "pro mod" and not CS:S

Post 22

The game was fine in 1.5. Steam is crap. I like my openGL cs.

Post 23

I think it's a great idea, and can't really see all too much whinging since they're not saying to change the public game, only the professional side of things.

Dont know what the rest of you are complaining about with it either, if it gets released you don't have to play it if you don't want, but the option would be there for those who do.

So I'm imagining it when I play CS:CZ and 1.6 in OpenGL?

Post 25

That would be great but i just dont see it happening

Post 26

yeah im over pro mod :p
is a really attractive idea at first but then you think about it more and you think eh **** it let's just stick with source
