Melbourne cup day.. Public holiday?

Tooheys New is putting together a petition to send to the pollies in
Canberra to push to get at least a half day public holiday for Melbourne
Cup. I for one think this is a great idea especially for those who enjoy
kicking back & having a New or 2 on afternoon race day.

This would be sweet if it happened!! :D

Victoria is the only state that will ever have a public holiday that day. same with Sydney cup day in Sydney, Darwin Cup Day in Darwin, Brisbane Cup day in QLD etc.

there is no Brisbane Cup public holiday here

i think it must be under a different name, like maybe showday? because like i said Its apparently Teddy bears picnic day, which is cupday. it was on a monday.

just googled it its on Queens Birthday. which is why you dont realise it :P but most if not all cups are on tuesdays and mondays.

Personally i cant see the point in a half day public holiday. Everyone will just goof off for the whole day anyway, might as well give them full permission to do it ;)

Darwin Cup day is called Picnic Day.

first tues of november yo. but there have been ones on mondays in the past, i remember that from a who wants to be a millionare question or something like that. Race day @ brissy is awesome, no holiday but everyone get dressed up, goes to the races and get very messy. always a good time

well for melb cup at some works we have a big lunch and pissup anyways.

Thanks the problem with this line of work. its all good fun, but i never get to go to the races only watch them :(

Having a public holiday is a joke for a horse race anyhow.
