"I'm waiting for the announcer to get on his knees and start blowing this horse I swear...."

The Diva is a mare... I'm sure she'd do enough 'blowing' back if he's game.

Post 6

Horses, horse racing, Melbourne and the Melbourne cup. Little men, whips and little men with whips. Stuck up women, poor dress sense and stuck up women with poor dress sense.

None of the above entertains me, and I do not understand the facination with this boring day full of red-necks, country-boys, big-money investors and women that drink red wine because they feel important when doing it.

Tripe, pure tripe.

The race that stops the nation has also choked up Australia’s biggest ISP, Telstra BigPond, reports Dan Warne.
Telstra’s much hyped free, live broadband streaming of the Melbourne Cup became overloaded well before the Melbourne Cup race took place.
The Telstra web server simply rejected incoming requests, regardless of whether users had pre-registered on the site or not.
Users reported having difficulty accessing the site from around 10am - hours before the famous race took place.
BigPond spokesman Craig Middleton said its racing site had stopped accepting incoming connections due to “capacity issues… I understand other racing sites are experiencing the same thing.
“The race that doesn’t just stop the nation!” he quipped.
However users that had pre-registered on the site for live coverage weren’t so amused.
BigPond had used the site to gather marketing details about prospective broadband customers, including the name of their current ISP and whether they’d consider switching to BigPond.
“I registered a week ago and tried it and tried it and it’s a joke. How do I unregister?” asked one user on the broadband user discussion forum Whirlpool.net.au.
“I’m guessing bogpond [sic] was hoping to lure more new customers over by showing everyone how good their "exclusive content" was - but it would seem that this even has merely shown everyone what sort of service they can expect from Telstra,” said another.
BigPond is infamous for delaying customer emails for weeks during a network crisis, when it said a huge deluge of spam stretched its mail server resources to breaking point.
“I question BigPond’s capacity planning strategy for this,” said Martin Sinclair, a Whirlpool reporter and owner of hosting firm Studiocoast.com.au. “I hope Telstra doesn’t say it couldn’t anticipate the demand for Melbourne Cup coverage.”
“I would be setting it all up through Akamai for something of this scale,” he said.
BigPond appears to be hosting the racing site from an old version of Microsoft’s web serving software, IIS 5.0, the version that, in its unpatched state, famously allows people to simply modify URLs to get access to the server’s root directory and files.
The software has now been replaced by the multi-threaded version 6.0 which is substantially better at handling a large number of simultaneous requests.
Microsoft itself advises that anyone using an IIS 5.0 server should either use multiple servers to allow for large capacity sites, or simply upgrade to the higher performance IIS 6.0.
Telstra’s actual streaming server, wmt.streaming.telstra.com, appears to be using load balancing on two different servers, however this evidently wasn’t enough capacity to handle the number of people wanting to stream the race.

Everyone says that... but I bet by this time next year, you won't remember the name.

Post 22

I just have trouble getting worked up over about 2 minutes of racing, or however long it is. It isn't long.

Unless I've bet away the wife and kids, that is. That helps.

Post 23

Wahooo i won
well i had some sweeps "0 worth, mr celeb i wan really happy with having him. he led the race the whole way except for the final straight and came last HAHAHA but im happy cause i got $3 for ending up last :)
Melb cup is great win or loose.

Post 24

I bet on a horse, but didn't watch the race. It's a good day out and all, but oh well. The only real thing I oppose, is Google's image:

[Image: http://members.iinet.net.au/~rtkstevens/google_cup.gif]

I don't get how people just accept that. It doesn't look like a 'o' at all. If they want to use that, they could have put it as the 'e'.

Im not just saying it dude. I will remember this day vividly and take it to the grave. The memory of the greatest racing mare ever on Australian turf will haunt me forever.

I follow racing in all its glory.

You dont know me so STFU.

Post 26

its probably Australias oldest sporting tradition, and in 150 years no horse has won it 3 times. no mare has won it twice even. no mare has won it over 56kg handicap let alone a 58kg handicap, and after all that she STILL won it by a big margin. you wont see this for a very long time gents. this definatly is history. they say that she can be compared to Phar Lap. but thats crap. she is nothing compared to Phar Lap.

and now that our arses have stopped bleeding, we will try and make some of money back on Oaks day and Stakes day :)

bookies and the totes never make money on the Melbourne cup. it just doesnt happen :P

Great day of racing. although way too long if your working. and as for all you nay sayers (no pun intended), the 106,457 people that turned out at Flemington today would probably dissagree with you :P
