Depends on what you want out of a martial art

Karate is mostly attack
Aikido is about using the force from the offender back on themselves

the list goes on

Winnellie Pub King Hit Blue Stubbies Style!

Sifu Wayne Kerr is an 11th Dan in the black art and trains patrons everynight after closing time. To make sure he takes you on as a student goto the bar and ask for a Vodka Lemon and Lime WITH a straw.

But seriously, why take classes when all you have to do is rent the entire Chuck Norris collection on dvd.

Build fitness, inner strength, all sorts of things. Techniques of the style. Karate just seems like the main one to me.

Let me summarise the rest of the thread:

Muay Thai is the best stand up martial art, Bar none.

Be honest with yourself, are you doing it (at least in part) to learn how to fight? Don't be embaressed if you are it doesn't make you into a macho wannabe or anything - I'll admit it right now I started martial arts to learn how to fight.

If you want to learn to fight: muay thai, krav maga, wing chun, jeet kune do or pretty much most mixed systems have somewhat of a clue these days. I dare say in a smaller place like Darwin where there might not be too many different schools the quality of the teacher would be more important than the system in seeing results. But in terms of seeing results in the shortest amount of time you can't go past muay thai.

If you're not doing it to learn how to fight do whatever takes your interest because you're going to have to invest your time and effort into it so it should be something that you enjoy. And just because it might not be useful in a fight doesn't make them useless at all, it's all really about what you want out of it.

ps. paging Jaian to this thread.

edit: ^^^^ hahaha already beaten by these chumps. i guess other people can remember one of the longest and most retarded threads in gu history. i won't be ruining this thread dw :)

edit2: oh and don't get me wrong just because you can fight in a dojo doesn't mean it will help you in the slightest when the real thing comes along. i learned that the hard way :)

Winnellie Pub King Hit Blue Stubbies Style actually sounds quite cool :p

I have done karate, muay thai, and Wing Chun kung fu ( there are a few different forms ). I actually really liked the kung-fu class that i was doing with my wife.

If you want to have a look at kung-fu - the little school on on the opposite corner of Hugry Jacks Cas ( Dripstone high side of the traffic lights) every tuesday and thursday ( Im fairly sure they are still there). Nigel and Marleene are the teachers and very nice and will let you watch a lesson if your looking around

To build fitness, pretty much any active martial art would help you. Just go visit various local gyms/dojos and see how cardio-intensive the warmups and drills and (most imporantly) the sparring is; the more the better.

For inner strength, the danger there is so many martial arts schools fill their students with a false self-confidence. Read the Darwin Awards to see some Melbourne kung fu student who strongly believed in himself and his sifu's words that he was able to defeat wild animals with his bare hands...and ended up dead the next day when he'd tried to sneak into the zoo and challenge a lion.

Why exactly are you interested in Karate? Is it because of the various Karate Kid movies, or becuase you have a nearby dojo, or some other reason?

If you're interested in self-defence, then most of the Karate schools in Australia are probably not suitable (Kyokushin-style is one of the few styles where they have full contact sparring, as opposed to point-sparring), same goes for virtually all variants of Tae Kwon Do.

You can choose styles which focus primarily on standup fighting - which include boxing/muay thai/karate - or those that incorporate grappling - such as Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or those that try to incorporate both.

If you could give more details as to what you hope to achieve, and what you're looking for in the martial arts, then there are a few people on this forum who can help/misinform you.

pretty much what uber tard said. Identify what it is you want to get out of the art. If you want to improve your fighting skills, pick up a mixed system. most will involve muay thai, boxing, a form of judo and/or jujitsu, and possibly some knife-fighting. if you truly want to become a good fighter though (as in the street variety), you'll need to get into fights :P. mixed systems are popular at the moment, and they'll probably give you the fastest results.

if you can't/don't want to do that, pick up boxing. great exercise, and good fun :)

The little school that Bad Crispy was talking about is Henbury School.

Muay Thai for your stand up
invite mates around on weekend have a few beers then wrestle for your ground game,
the person with the least scratches and blood on them wins.

As you can see Blueblood this thoery of training "as mentioned above" is in motion with fellow GU members Jaian and I had our last tournament on firecracker night which was very interesting. Lets just say I needed at least 4-5 showers to get all the sand off.

Our next tournament looks to be sooner then later and tickets go one sale at the start of the new months price is undesided and venue has not been selected but is sure to be a fight to remember - actually 3 fights I think the agreement was lol.

anyhow, this works and the experience is great so fight your mates as the experience is worth it.
