Rant on

Every game seems to be the damn same..no innovation, no new types of games coming out, just slap a new graphics engine onto an old idea and re-release it.

MMO's = timesink pure and simple the longer they can keep you playing the more they make off you......I won't even go into my feelings on Wow

FPS = Got a new graphics card, went back and played thru Doom3 and Quake4......more of the same, same shit new shiny bits, is half life the only FPS nowadays that even tries to innovate?

RPG's = Just went thru , Titan Quest, the new diablo 'killer' , Sacred, NWN, you name it they are all the same, NWN is Pools of radiance with shiny shit.
I suspect NWN2 will just be more off the same.

What else is there, can someone please let me know a game as different as Black and White was. Or is the industry in a fking loop.

Rant off.

Post 2

I know the feeling, i just bought myself a x800 second hand video card, and reinstalled all the old games, but after a day or two, I was bored of them all.

the only games I am looking forward to it QW and TF2, but theres months off :(

coco and I have ranted ... go about your business now.

Post 3

Yeah I haven't played a decent game in ages, Gladius on the xbox is about the only game I've replayed more then once. Just seems todays ages is all about graphics then gameplay.

I can't agree more

You want innovation you need to go DS

Post 6

Meh i agree, haven't played a decent game for ages. Maybe everyone is just growing out of them?

I guess on the bright side marks at uni go up :P

Post 7

Yeah well im thinking it Spero, the PC manufacturers aren't using their heads so I might go the console way for a while and try a much wider range of games.
Good to see its not just me tho...played thru HOMM5 over the weekend and while its pretty its less functional as a game than number 4.

Post 8

Wait for spore! :P

Post 9

Spore will be very different thats for sure.
But I agree coco, not enough diversity or innovation in games these days.
FPS's have all been done to death, as have MMO's and even RPG's (and RPG's are meant to be THE cradle of life when it comes to game diversity/ingenuity).

Hence my recent 'conversion' to console games.
Been playing xbox games for the last few days and loving it. x-link Kai ftw.

Post 10

i thought HOMMV was getting great reviews? (individual reviews, not magazine shrills)

Post 11

Yeah look its a very nice game. But they have cut a lot of out Heroes 4 that made the game repeatedly playable.

Eg. In Heroes 4 you do a scenario and can choose any race and start in any postion on the map, so even tho you play the map 10 times its always different.
In Heroes 5 you are locked down to the starting postion and only 1 race in every scenario.

Good game but apart from the introduction of the graphics engine they used ( WC3? ) its the same game.

Post 12

i thought homm4 was considered the worst of the series?

Post 13

I've been a fan from the first HOMM. I thought 4 was nowhere near as good as 3.

Post 14

homm4 was absolutely terrible, it was an insult to the HOMM series, and i have played them all even the original kings bounty
HOMM5 is awesome :D and a great addition to the series, if only i could get past that bloody stage.....

Post 15

i dont think games are really at a standstill, it just depends on what games you are looking at.

there are games out atm that are very innovative, like that narbacular drop for instance, and games coming out soon like spore - all are very original.

fps has been done, nothing more you can really do with it, so i dont expect much more than clones for awhile

Post 16

i play chess, every game is new for me :P

on the real notes.
MMO's and FPS's are the same for me. Once you get good at them its fun pissing off other people, specially in FPS's! Bring on TF2!

You guys are nuts =D

I've been playing the games since the Apple IIe and Kings bounty as well.

3 better than 4...3 was half the game 4 was.

Go back to your hardware :P

Post 18

I disagree coco... I reckon 3 was better then 4. 4 definately had some good points like the introduction of heroes attacking. But I had much more enjoyment out of 3.

Post 19

HOMM3 Complete rulez

Post 20

Bah Blasphemers!!!!!

Post 21

dispite the comments about Saints Row being "another GTA clone" I'm enjoying it so far.

Post 22

I'm certainly looking forward to Supreme Commander. Also waiting for SunAge, which is an interesting little title coming from a smaller, lesser known developer.

Both should be pretty damn good. :)

Post 23

Yeah it's all a bit zZzz at the moment isn't it. While I'm really looking for to TF2, ET:QW and UT2007, the reality is they're only going to keep me entertained for a few months (if that).

I hope these titles prove me wrong and I go on enjoying them for years as I did QWTF/CS, but I doubt it.

Post 24

Agree with the title, I've only started playing computer games again in the past couple of months, 95% of my playing time is on the GU server, outside of that, with GU regulars on others (CSS, DODS, Hidden).

It's fun shooting ppl u know, can't say i'm much of a game fanatic at all, but im definately looking forward to TF2!

Post 25

Supreme Commander makes me happy in my pants, Definately can't wait for that to come out. Same with Spore.

Post 26

well coco you should know my view on new games i post them on every "OMG *insert successfull game name here* Version 3 is coming out" even with movies and TV shows its the same same. it is hard to come up with new things these days.

out of the 55GB of games i have on my games drive i use 20GB which is 2 games, CS:S and wow, becuase they are like 10gb each :p wow becuase it just so awesome (coco i know you hate it, but dont hate the game, hate the people you played with that ****ed it up for you, trust me its no that bad, you just got a bad deal on that server.)

and i completely disagree with doom 3, while completely agree with Q4. to me doom 3 was something completely new and very ****ing awesome. where as quake 4 was doom 3 with different guns. oh and the name too :p

i give super respect to games like Oblivion, which are desinged to be long lasting if you care for it, but at the same time it had an end, like the mario games when you clocked them it said: "Thanks for playing, now go outside and do something else"...where as nowa days they create these games that never end, to suck more of your money. wow is one of them i know, but it's such a well crafted game it doesnt matter.

i went back and played a barb through normal in D2 a few weeks ago, played starcraft once or twice, even downloaded alex the kidd in miracle land after i got the message tone on my phone. they just arent the same, but just as well, there should be an end to everything.

and i couldnt even be bothered DOWNLOADING "demo's" if you know what i mean...of new games let alone play them. because they are like you said, without inovation. without creativity.

even TF2 lacks anything new. dont get me wrong ill play it. but i doubt it'll last long.

sorry i ranted longer than the original ranter. :P

/end rant.

Post 27

All good man seems that there is a lack of orginality out there by the comments, and people like yourself Rec and co try a lot more games than I do so im heartened to know its just not my bitterness as I get older :P

Dont get me wrong about Wow, its was fun for a while...but yeah a mixture of what happened with the clan and playing a healer who got thrown into MC 6 hours after he hit 60 probably didn't help. My main gripes with the game are based around the fundamentals of it and raiding.

Post 28

im with coco only game i seem to play at the moment is microsoft flight simulator 04 and thats not even for fun LOL

Post 29

Flatout 2 looks nuts, nice twist on racing, carmagedonesque

Post 30

With everything that has been said I will have to agree that I find most games as of late (past couple of years) boring. To be honest, it's not that they are exactly boring, everything just feels so similar, so repetitive. I can't wait for the new slew of games about to be released - some of which have shown to be very promising. Spore for example, what an amazing concept of gameplay, simple can't wait to get my hands on it.

I'm seriously hoping some new titles and consoles (Wii in mind :D) will broadin my selection of games I play. At this current time I play CS:S, tis all. I had played WoW for a few months, loved everybit of it. Got to level 60 and now can't find a reason to play, the game simply takes to much time - time that could be spent doing something creative, like learning to play guitar!

Don't get me wrong, I long for the release of Burning Crusade so I can continue my quest to lvl 70, but to create another/more character(s) is riduculous, I don't enjoy spending every waking minute trying to become better in a game, when in fact I could be becoming a better and more talented person in general.

Anyone ever heard of, or played 'Interstate 76': NitroRiders'? This game dates back to like 1996 and I still find it more enjoyable to play than most new games today! I think that just may be saying something...

Twas my rant, and tis all.

Post 31

yeah interstate 76 was cool... there's a game out now Crashday that's similar... but for sheer car fun, no topping flatout 2 - the stunt events rock - playing darts with your driver? woohooo!

Ron Gilbert's view on gaming and the games industry, which for the most part I agree with

Bit long but interesting listen

Post 33

Ron Gilbert, isnt that the monkey island guy?
Monkey Island is by far the best games series i have ever played

Post 34

Help me legalize airsoft in Australia...

Just don't sell your first born child to get an M4...

Post 35

Interstate '76 was incredible for its time. I absolutely adored that game!

Right up there with my all time classics (QWTF, Thief, Broken Sword, GTA3).

Maybe if the Greeks or Italians won an international paintball tournament it might happen, wait, no, she'd just throw a big party for them.

Post 44

homm2 > 5 > 3 > 4 imo. havnt played any others in the series.

yeah most games are tending to be graphics over gameplay, just part of gaming becoming more mainstream i guess - trying to wow newbs who don't understand what makes a classic game. i think the trend will stop after a while though, once mainstream gamers become bored with pretty graphics and look for something with some depth it might start to improve.

Post 45

Any newish games like crusader no remorse around? I know theres shadowgrounds but that just doesn't match up to crusader.

That game was great when i played it years ago.

Post 46

I've been thinking much the same thing recently, and I went and installed Age of Empires II again. Endless amounts of fun. Oblivion was the biggest game to be around (don't get anal with me - the point is it was anticipated) and I played it for a fantastic 2 months, then got over it.

I would like to play GTA: SA again actually, but cbf installing car mods.

Post 47

I never actually got into Oblivion it just seemed to lack something. Maybe i just don't like games so open ended, having some direction can make them so much more fun.

Post 48

Yeah i never got into oblivion either.

However HOMM5 is one of the best additions to homm imo, and the campaign(so far) is awesome.

Post 49

my homm5 download got to 2GB of 2.1GB and my emule shit itself and the file wont load into the download que... :(

must...kill....person...who ****ed with my emule...

Post 50

It was ME.

Also, crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret are two of my all time favourite games.
Own both of them on Original CD :)

Post 51

Did you ever set your PC time to Xmas and play them?

Post 52

Nah but judging by what you told me on MSN, I think i might have to do it :P

Post 53

Some of the DS games are awesome, breath of fresh air type thing :P

I recently got an Xbox too now that they're cheap.. I'm enjoying Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth a lot.. horror sneak-em-up FPS style, but sort of realistically done.. (a couple shots kills you etc).. If you, say, break your leg, you can't run any more, you just hobble along - so you can inject yourself with morphine, so you can't feel the pain and can walk faster....but it makes your vision go all blurry and trippy. Your character also starts going insane from being in a horror-full situation, so you hear voices and hallucinate and stuff... but it's done in quite a non-cheesy way, unlike that gamecube game Eternal Darkness.

I'm a third of the way through and only just got a gun. It's not the average FPS.
Love the intense chase sequence where you have to escape from a hotel, near the start.
Check it out! (there's a pc version too, i think)
