Quote: Engineers Sean McCarthy and Richard Walshe claim to have ?found a way of producing free, clean and limitless energy out of thin air.? Videos after the jump.
In Steorn?s theory, fixed magnets could act upon a moving magnet in such a way as to make it a virtual perpetual motion generator. In an electrical appliance - a computer, kettle, mobile phone or toy - that would provide all the power for its lifetime. Of course, free-energy cars, power plants and water-pumping systems could follow. A better world indeed
the old permant magic motor trick sorry doesn't work. They got Steorn's theory wrong too. It realy stats. Quote: Publicity and marketing makes money from gullible people
ahhhhhhhahahaha.. let me piss in this cup! you can drink it - cos it's mostly water! Once you've had a couple of litres worth, let me try and sell you this perpetual motion engine, since you might just be crazy enough to buy then!
Quote from Rip;281416: intresting none the less Mr negative naysayers
hehe in science, the onus is on the claimant to demonstrate the validity of their premise. A few pieces of machined metal (conveniently large enough to conceal a battery) and some wiring do not do that.
and they want a panel of judges to assess it? WTF? that isnt how you get your peers to check your findings, that's Scientist Idol that is. You write up papers and distribute them via scientific journals so that other scientists can look through them and run their own tests.
Bleh I never said they were right or wrong, I said it was intresting, and I just find it always strange that with anything thats a so called "Break Through" most people jump on the negative bandwagon. Time will tell if they a wrong or right, Ive always stood by the premise that people should wait and find out for themselves instead of instantant Judgement. Having doubts is one thing, an outright negative view the instant people hear about somthing is things people should avioid IMO....
perpetual motion is always going to be met with a *cough*bullshit*cough* response. it'd be fantastic to be wrong, but every time its been announced so far, it's been proven to be bullshit.
Reroute secondary power to the forward shields. Reinforce structural integrity and Damnit Jim, get the engineers to deck 5 and replace those damn Power couplings.
If we get enough power, we may be able to send a Tacheon feedback pulse using our Tractor beam and disable their engines.
The earth isn't round. What an idiot. Let's kill him! You're trying to build a machine that allows you to fly? Impossible. Communication between hand-held devices from opposite sides of the globe without wires? Science-fiction!
This is quite obviously b*llshit, but it's more fun keeping an open mind about things like it. :)

I have a rock here that keeps tigers away, wanna buy it for $500? =)
Regardless if people believe it or not, Steorn are planning on a demo in the next few days with a live feed of a simplified version of their magnet machine, called the Orbo.
Demo will be found here if/when they get the thing working
Quote: We are experiencing some technical difficulties with the demo unit in London. Our initial assessment indicates that this is probably due to the intense heat from the camera lighting. We have commenced a technical assessment and will provide an update later today. As a consequence, Kinetica will not be open to the public today (5th July). We apologise for this delay and appreciate your patience.
Doubt we'll ever see the demo, hah.
However, if the article I just posted about the laws of physics ever changing is plausible in the minds of the worlds brightest, then this should be too. :P

I like to trot out a Carl Sagan gem when this argument (that scientists have scoffed and been wrong before) crops up:
Quote from Carl Sagan: They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Quote from Aegis;281714: I have a rock here that keeps tigers away, wanna buy it for $500? =)
Interesting. It might be bullshit but let's keep an open mind.
In fairness to rip, nobody has explained the basis of the tut-tutting, skepticism etc etc. Wikipedia has a nice writeup of why it doesn't work (Conservation of Energy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_motion
More generally skeptics, physicists etc accept in principle that they might be wrong, but that it is extremely unlikely to be so. In practice is considered impossible.
This is like atheism. In principle most atheists are agnostic, knowing that the argument cannot be settled either way. But in practice they see the likelihood of theism being correct being so low that they are atheists for all practical purposes.
well you also have to think about the possibility that our laws of physics are wrong, or just out by like..... .000000001 it would be a big difference..
people said you couldn't create a machine that fly's, well i see em every day? im just surprised were not using magnetic propulsion yet to leave orbit,

That'd be because you'd need a launch ramp the size of the new hadron collider to get a satellite into orbit. expense++
unfortunately one with a short/cheaper take-off ramp like that used by the Blue Earth in Teknoman, would squish the occupants and many sensitive components because a magnetic launch platform would require that all of the velocity required to leave the atmosphere must be imparted upon the project/satellite/ship/etc prior to it leaving the magnetic field effect of the launch ring/ramp. So basically you need a fairly long runup and ramp to avoid the Gs building up to quickly.

you could do that... or you could just vibrate multiple magnets to oppose the magnetic frequency of the earth and take off

I never said I believed them or not, I honestly have no idea, but I do find it interesting they are trying to back up their claims with a live demo, if it works or not is another matter.
It is a sure fire way to destroy a business though if they are proved wrong.
Further to Steorn?s announcement yesterday (5th July) regarding the technical difficulties experienced during the installation of its ?Orbo? technology at the Kinentica Museum in London, Steorn has decided to postpone the demonstration until further notice.
Sean McCarthy CEO stated that ?technical problems arose during the installation of the demonstration unit in the display case on Wednesday evening. These problems were primarily due to excessive heat from the lighting in the main display area. Attempts to replace those parts affected by the heat led to further failures and as a result we have to postpone the public demonstration until a future date.?
He continued that ?we apologise for the inconvenience caused to all the people who had made arrangements to visit the demonstration or were planning on viewing the demonstration online.?
Over the next few weeks the company will explore alternative dates for the public demonstration.
Can't exactly say I am shocked that it didn't go ahead, would be been good to see something spin around whether or not it was fake is another matter
Quote from ResLo;313704: The virtue of open-mindedness depends on how far you open your mind and how long you keep it open, and whether you close it when you ought to.
Kinda like like Milenko and certain other body parts?
I don't think their "Orbo" works... For starters, the reaction needs to be initiated, which will require energy, at which point it'll be required to continue to accelerate in order to 'create' possitive energy. From what I can see, there's also no evidence of a vaccuum there either, which would almost be certain in order to simply get 'what ever it is' to turn, because more then likely the resistance would be too great. It'd also have to defy gravity.
In this case, I call bullshit... I like the idea of perpetual motion, but this isn't it. Maybe one day, but I really don't think that this is that day, and I don't think it'll be a relatively simple matter of strapping a few aluminium tubes together with some wires and magnets... In the least, it'll require some serious quantum level mechanics or some form of working that we haven't even looked at beyond quantum level.

like flying a kite in a lightning storm. or mixing nitric acid with starch and wood fibres. or deciding to test some random petri dish fungus out as a pathogen.
Your examples are not analagous. The engineers here do not claim to have accidentally found perpetual motion. They are claiming to have engineered it. And unlike the examples you gave, nobody has yet been given the details which would allow the results to be independently tested.

:p + wierdo claiming to have unlimited power from a couple of magnets
which of these things is not like the others? which of these things is not quite the same? The difference here, is that the ones you mentioned submitted their findings in suitably scientific docos complete with equations etc for the rest of the scientific community to have a gander at.
Our good friend Dr. LookAtMeMaI'mOnTV! is not doing that, he wants a panel of judges? hello publicity stunt. sorry dude, this guy is just an attention seeker. if he ever does get round to demoing it, it wont work and he'll say something broke in transit, and oh shock horror, we cant POSSIBLY EVER FIX THAT because THAT was the phasictranswhupper and there's only ever been one of those! No sorry, the world loses out, poor me... why do you all hate me? it was real! but it broke trying to show it to all of YOU, so it's YOUR fault my invention NEVE-*-doesnt work!
haha, I wasn't saying or agreeing that they've found anything.
but you have to laugh every time someone commends scientific discovery is based on some precognitive set of rules, when I recon I could count atleast a dozen major discoveries that account for nothing more than dumb luck :p
read a book a while back that stated that much of science is just ideas whose time has come. they demonstrated this by the fact that most major scientific discoveries were being pioneered by multiple people around the globe - key point being steam engines, where there were like 4 different guys bringing their ideas to fruit at the same time. the guy that published first was considered the father of steam engines (still is). and there's a whole bunch of similar things like the theory of evolution, wasnt just darwin working on it.
certainly lends credence to that other thread about this universe being a simulation in my book. glitteringprizes anyone? :)
but yeah, magenetowhatistmagic engine == bollocks =)
Thomas Kuhn, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. He popularised the word "paradigm" to describe the shifts in scientific worldviews and it's been seized on business gurus and cranks ever since; which should tell what little good it does.
What's different today is that we have the scientific method. As a system of knowing about the natural world it has no peer. It may be true that ideas circulate for a while before congealing (look up Anaximander some time), but once they enter the modern scientific machine you're far more likely to arrive at reliable facts than by conjecturing, hand-waving and wishful thinking.
