Steak is meant to be rare that's what makes a steak good. If you like your steak well done then your opinion really dont matter. Hog's Breath is excellent have always had great service there. There is a better steak to be had down in Cullen Bay, forget the name of the place but it is too pricey. Only been there once.

i've had food at hogs breath all over the country, never got bad service, never got a wrong meal, and never got something even approaching an average steak, let alone a bad one. and we're talking dozens of meals here.

it was a group booking for a party and was prepaid so yeah only once did i fork out money, i put it done to them having a busy night for the poor service but they seem to be consistent with it whenever i've tried to go there, again like i said i've tried four times to have this oh so wonderful steak they boast about and each time have left sorely disappointed

it seems as if EVERY place u've been to has stuffed your order. take it from someone who works as both a waiter and a chef. if you ask the waiter (nicely) to fix up your steak, and chef out back will happily fix it for you.
i don't eat at hoggies, had it once, was a decent feed, but i can't justify paying upwards of $30 for a scotch/sirloin steak
if you want a quality steak, go to a fine dining restaurant that serves eye fillets, it'll cos you a good $28, but it's the best cut of steak you can get
oh, and to enjoy a good steak, you CANNOT have it cooked past medium.

Been to hoggies in brissy and darwin and like i have stated have never been satisfied which is part of the reason im asking for opinions on local places to get a good slab of beef and Cow, what IS the definition of medium?? cooked how far??, i do like some pink in the middle just not burnt then raw

Yeah steak is best enjoyed medium-rare and can't stress this enough you need to let the steak sit a couple minutes after it has been off the grill.

So many top notch steak restaurants refuse to cook their steaks beyond medium because they know it'll make their great steak (and what a waste of a fresh steak) taste like beef jerky.

Want the best steak in Darwin, here is the only way to get it.
Go to the Butcher Shop in Hibiscus Shopping Center.
See Dave the owner and buy a really nice cut of beef.
Take it home, fire up the bbq and cook it the way you like it.
Their meat is first rate.
That way you can only blame the cook.
Really how hard is it to cook a nice steak?

i dont particularly like hoggies either, and i LOVE steak!
they are ridiculously over-priced and the actual meal is tiny.
the steak size is quite small compared to most places (except when u ask for a huge steak and that costs even more the price gets gets stupidly expensive for a simple meal) and sides...well excuse me but i dont consider 3 or 4 curly fries adequete. i want a decent serving of CHIPS or a nice salad with my steak.
i tend to order medium-rare, i prefer medium but whenever i have ordered medium from anywhere it comes out well done (yucky). darwins idea of medium rare seems to be closer to medium. a well done steak is just awful, may as well order a burnt burger pattie cause thats what its gonna taste like.
as for steaks in darwin, i agree with lataf best is one that you make yourself (although i think id buy my steaks from a wholesaler like westralia instead)
DO NOT freeze the steak! put it in the fridge (covered), eat in that night.
YUMMY!!!
as for places to order/eat steak, i think u cant beat the local pub/club for a good steak out. most are the same. sometimes are better than others but meh that happens everywhere.

Damn well they're not always right, lots of customers are just plain ****en stupid. Just because it's red, doesn't mean it's blood. At the point of Well done, you're completely defeating the whole purpose of a good steak. May as well ask them to serve you a steak from the trash and make it 'well done' so it at least has a reason to be well done.

Raging bull steak house at Parap make a nice steak. Hoggies is also good for medium rare steaks as other than waiting to be seated I dont remember having a bad meal there.
The only other place that i have really enjoyed a steak at is teh Argentine Bar and Grill in Cullen Bay ( has nothing to do with why we had our wedding and reception there :D)

10 Litchfield. Dunno about the intricate details of how their steak is prepped or cooked or whatever. But you're garanteed to get a decent sized meal at a fair price in a good atmosphere.

I partly agree with Lataf. Here is my ordering meals:
1) Fanny Bay Butchers - inch thick Scotch Fillet (rough price of about "5 per steak. Get the mrs to get in the kitchen and do a cesear salad and some potato gems. Make sure you get DING Snags
2) Hibiscus - (they are closer to me) - same thing but get scotch fillet and cook it medium rare - tell the mrs to cook some pasta, veges and serve it on a nice plate ready to eat. Rough price "0 - "2
3) The mrs is not home, she is away in Sydney - go to Hoggies with mates and pay $30. This includes - slab of meat "5, Cesear Salad ($5), chips ($5) and then they do the cleaning for you ($5) :-)

it's not in Darwin, but if you're ever passing through Casino in NSW, you MUST stop at the Clydsdale Inn Steakbarn ... best steak I've eaten ever - ribeye fillet at its best

YES!!! Got some cuts there before and they are the best!!! But I didn't knew Dave. Steaks are best cooked fresh from the shop.
Hogs Breath (Bondi) rump steak is nice but a little too pricey...
Also tried Hard Rock (Darlinghurst) but their steak is more rip off than experience ($30 for the plate).

While on holidays i discovered a nice little family run Italian resturant on the Gold coast in Mermaid beach ( its across the road from The Lone star steakhouse and Sizzlers on the highway ) named Casa Mia, The food there was ABSOLUTELY delicious from their spag bowl through to the steak, needless to say we went back twice before we left, prices where quite good and the service was great, for the pizza lovers they do a woodfired oven style pie which was very popular, had a constant stream of pick ups while we ate

Best steak ive ever had was from a place in Fiji (the ivy i think it was called). $50+ a meal but damn it was worth every cent. You just cant get service in Australia like you can some places oversea's, which is a big pitty.
As for more local places (other then the good old BBQ) ive found hogs breath to be good, other then being a little expensive. They seem to get my steak closest/on to what i want it (m.rare) every time. I know of at least 1 place in Darwin where they WILL NOT cook a steak above medium, regardless of what the customer wants, and they'll gladly tell you to go jump if you argue (my friend tried lol). I dont really like pub steaks as i find they are usually a cheaper cut to make them bigger.
Next time im in Sydney im going to try the Flame restaurant (i think its that) to see if its worth the ~$80 a steak.
Oh and worst place for steak/service ive found is Peewee's

2nd raging bulls goodness it was the bombdigty, tho somebody had the shits cause we were waiting "so long" for our dinner in reality it wasn't such a bad wait when i pointed out how long some others had been waiting...
i had the rib eye medallion with creamy garlic sauce. ****ing excellent. only gripe was that is asked for medium rare and it was closer to meduim-welldone 3which made the outside a little dry but meh was still awesome drowned in the sauce and was served over nice chrispy fries and a salad with a very nice dressing to top it off.
Oh and the bruschetta (we shared one for an entree) was astounding. pity they told u it was four slice then they served up three, -1 for misinformed waiter :P

Don't order a steak in NZ, you get 300g of horribly cooked gristle on a bed of potato mash and what could have been once described as a mushroom. (Every steak I had in the country was horrible, get the lamb... they know their sheep, at least...)
And I have to say, Hoggies is great for multitudes of other reasons.

Pee-Wee's 3-4 months ago had the best steak, without a doubt that I have ever had.

Whoops, was getting confused with the terminology there.
Marbling yes, but what I meant was that there was no intermuscular saturated fat (the fat around the edges) and absolutely no gristle.
Anyway, best steak I've had in Darwin (and probably anywhere...).

If you like steak I suggest you never visit Kobe (or any good steak restaurant in Japan). It'll ruin any appreciation you have for Aussie steak as it doesn't even remotely compare.

Just about anything they eat as an actual steak is from Japan, the Kobe region being one of the best places. Mind you Japanese steak starts at around "00 a KG from the butcher so its more of a luxury. Any beef that comes from here would probably be headed for either soup, curry or burger patty as its a completely different kind of meat (and probably cheaper then the local stuff).
I just remembered that Australia might export some Kobe-grade steak to Japan, but if they do they sure as hell don't sell locally which really sucks >.<
