I am a Trainee. So I guess I'm answering phones, selling stock, ordering stock, maintaining stock, filing invoices/quotes/faxes, and mostly picking up slack where it's needed.

Man I need to get paid more than $300 a week.

Post 5

Post 7

Get a trade if your not afraid of actual hard work.
I am an Electronics/Communications technician.
Currently working for the firies temp for a guy on holidays.
I sit on my ass all day and stare at a computer. Well 3 computers monitoring remote telemetry from over 500 fire panels throughout the NT. If something fails locally i go and fix it. The gear rarely fails so here I sit, that got real boring for me real fast. I hate it but on the plus side they pay me about 2k a week.
Still I cant wait to get out of here and go back to the workshop to do some hands on stuff again, even with a paycut of almost 40%. I love my job and work with a great bunch of guys. Money isnt important to me as long as I have enough to live and enjoy.

Post 8

Client Services Officer

I do technical support for a college both client based user support and some network assistance. (working with active directory mainly)

I like my job because its so wide in options and they are putting me through IT certificates with the UNI.. but eventually I would like to be a project officer or a boss or something.. IT support will only get you so far, this is just a major stepping stone for me.

Although at the moment I am working in IT administration while our administration chick is on maternity leave.. another stepping stone to world domination :D

Post 9

you cant usually walk into a 50k+ paying job.
find something to specialize in, start a busniess
you cant just do these things over night, they take years of study/training.

Sitting behind a desk, answering phones.
I dunno. When I get home, it just doesnt feel like an honest days work.

I get more satisfaction out of carrying Poly pipe around a yard all day, or filling/lifting/testing gas bottles and stuff. I kinda miss my old job :(

Post 13

Web Application Developer (I made the accronym WAD!)

build database powered web systems - online CMSes, financial management systems, shopping carts, project management systems, and a whole bunch of other buzzword-compliant apps. Oh, and of course a kickass webcomic! =)

building a web-based Crossword generator at the moment (still!) - have set it up so users require zero plugins to use it, pure HTML(exported from CFML) and a smidgen of javascript to build the cells from options in a popup.

Post 14

Electronics/Communications technician

for 2k a week man i'll drink to that.

which company would be the best place to tray and get a apprentiship with.

Post 15

if you want a 50k+ job get a good degree or learn a trade.

<<< part-time call centre worker, full time economics student. i'm not in darwin though =]

Post 16

i really wouldnt mind building houses or something for a living. but im too lazy and unfit. you can easily now get paid 1500 a week in a tradies job if you play your cards right. and like lenko said it feels like a REAL job.

Post 17

Incident Management Officeer (aka glorified helpdesk analist)

In Darwin ITS is really the only option.

However any trade will do really, I know mechanics on upwards of 130k and sparkies on over 100k. All you have to do is get thru the first 3-4 years on povo wages, like 200-400 week.

Post 19

mechanics on that much??? they must be out at the mines surely? not the garage operators here like toyota etc??

Diesel mechanics mine sites and in town. True tho mine sites are where the big money is. Always a need for sparkies and mechanics at mines.

Post 22

Service technician for controls system company (Supervisor now) Pays great but you need an electrical trade or background. Go from site to site with your main tool being a laptop. Get a company car, phone and laptop and pays well. Good bunch of guys to work for.

Post 32

after initial training and recruit school which is about 1yr in total you are on $48000p.a and you get a trade

Post 37

Audio Visual Technical Operator, AKA video and sound engineer or the guy who sets up the projector and power point preso at the conferences(it is harder than you think). I like working on shows and big conferences, plenty of hands on work and chances to think on you feet. I'm an army reservist in the band and got sent on two audio engineering causes so help me qual wise but doing a cert course and taking and finding oportunities to do sound for a band is a good place, but most of the industry start as box relocation technicians. My video specility I picked up as I went along being fast learner and doing your own research is important. If I want to earn much more than $50k a year soon I will have to make the move to studio work either a good audio studio in big city not many in a aust and jobs are rare and hens teeth or make the move to TV(which is my goal). Also being handy with a soldering iron helps I'm slowly picking up the art of electronics repair.

Realy when it gets down to it if you enjoy what you do what you get paid is secondary(as long as it is enough to live and enjoy life). I could be on "00k year by now doing something I hated(I drop out of a degree I was doing well in but hated) but then I wouldn't have been able to have been a reformed WoW addict in the mean time and have spent the last 5year playing music in the army.

Post 38

Kids plural ;) - good mate.

Post 39

hey i used to work for projection plus in darwin doing the same shit as you and i definently wasnt on 50k i know a guy there now who is running the hire dept and he isnt even on 50k a year. i left that crap because thats what it was crap... but hey each to their own u would know steve wilkin wouldnt u?

thats right she was pregnant when she left... did you end up having a boy or girl?

Post 40

Another boy.

Post 41

Im a machinery operator and am on 50k+ a year living in town, if i went to some hole in the ground i'd get close if not over 100k but wouldn't get to sleep in my own bed most of the time, im also studing IT externally to improve on my cert 4 ( client support ), after gaining a CCNA and a MSCE, i'll prolly go to study something different prehaps through military college simply because of the lifestyle and possible overseas deployment

till then i get to see things like this at work

Post 51

funny... the navy cant have all its patrol boats in the one spot at any one time, its a bit of a bone of contention as to why they didnt put 1 2 3 4 & 5 there, maybe they thought that noone would notice. and why preytell would you be yelling at me?

Can you convert some access databases to run via asp for me then?? PM me if you can.

Sorry Linux nerd, it's all they need.

But feel free to contribute something of substance if you like, ferinstance why I'd be better off running it on php and mysql. Surely you have nothing better to do at this time on a Friday night....

:D :D :D

Post 55

i wish i could honestly say i'm doing something else, but i'm busy upgrading my perl installation :P

you gotta admit its kinda cool

Well feel free to offer to do my databases then, perhaps you have saturday night free????

I can put them onto ftp if you are keen. I'm serious and I'll pay. One is on Access 97 and mail merges to Word, the other is on access 2000 (?) and has a VB frontend. Really I dont mind if I have to install a linux box into their network if that's what will make you do them...

Post 58

I remember ADI/Thales had a job ad that said something along the lines of working with these[Image: http://www.gamers-underground.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1319&stc=1&d=1168597336]

and I backed out on teh condition about non-disclosure agreement for 20 years. But it's quite cool to have work on one of the SEA-Dragons and Phalanx anti missle systems. I don't know if they'll open up a new one. Recently, they advertised in TAFE. And I'm kinda itchin to try again (hopefully without the 20 year NDA).

Post 59

I used to work on these
[Image: http://www.immersivetechnologies.com/Images/machine/hitachi_ex2500.jpg]
and got paid very well for being an apprentice. In my opinion if your thinking about joining the armed forces as an apprentice only for the money and don't really want all that military stuff, go to the mines. Either way your going to have to be away from civilization for a large part of it but mines usually pay more with less commitment.

Post 60

thats true but defence force bases are usually near civilization

Post 61

yeah, in the same way mines are. Mines usually do fly in fly out too on a 1 or 2 week rotation.

Post 62

er.

hahaha ditto =) sorry Jabsy, CF or PHP are the way to go (prefer CF myself since it's the language I know) :)

as for access... they added too many letters to the name.. dump the CCE and you have it's True Name - handy for banishing rituals...

Post 65

Telstra - Call Centre (Move Residential)

I earn mid 40k a year, plus i'm on incentive pay and have the possiblilty of earning upto 100k a year (which i'll look to be earning)

It's a cut throat/demanding job but if ya get into it, it is quite an enjoyable job.. but then again you would be doing the same things over and over.

They're also looking at hiring for Febuary... You train for a month before your on the phones. so you have that lil bit of training before get thrown into the fire...

Post 66

cannon fodder yeah we know about that...

Post 67

Try NT Police. After the 6 months of recruit training you could easily earn 60+ a year in your first year.

Hey Kiza, I was on HMAS Stuart many years ago and we got stuck in a Cyclone off Hong Kong. 30 m waves, we got smashed for 2 days. 1 bloke washed overboard with broken leg etc. Was good fun. Not for him of course.

Coppers and Firemen have tough jobs. Cops deal with society's worst yet they're pressured by both government and public. Between the two, I'll choose to be a fireman. GunZ not tuff enuff for cop stuff.

Post 72

Im a Warranty Clerk for a Car Dealership. Desk job most of the day with shitty hours and lack of pay. Currently across the road the guy doing my job earns an extra 10k to what do. Either way its pretty laid back doing paperwork and speaking to mechanics all day with the occassional customer who doesnt understand their warranty doesnt cover servers, car crashes or their kids doing burnouts in their cars.

Other then that yeh its boring as hell and a lot of responsibility but I love having my own office and being able to cruise around.

BTW if you guys think coppers are getting good money see Prison Officers. $32k to week 4, $42k to week 8 and $52k after week 8. GOOD MONEY but dealing with some of the WORST people in a refined space.

i haven't been to a prison recently, but i'm pretty sure they're one of the least refined spaces out there.

Post 74

I mean a refined space to be with some bad people :(

Out in the open aint so bad but yeh...

Post 75

CONFINED!!!!!!!!!!!

stupid stupid

Post 76

Cheers

PS I love my curtains

Post 79

lol @ ghostrider curtains.

Post 80

lol @ coke... :o

Post 81

Heh on a serious note tho, thats EXACTLY what my EQ addicted brothers room looked like a few years ago when I visited him.

I threw it all outside into a 44 and burnt it.

Post 82

There's nothing to worry about if enrolled in the forces at the moment... Howard said he's not sending any more inoccent soldiers off to a corrupt war to sieze oil for the United States, only to die in battle and create a larger death toll than 9/11 itself, ever again.

So, rest assured you're not being sent to Iraq... Oh wait, Howard is a filthy liar.

Anyway...

Post 83

I think he forgot to tell defence that.

Post 84

lol @ Ebola !

Telling DE warries about the "Tarten Terror"

Semper Paratus

"Tell me a tale a tale of the sea" :P

You didn't even warn me to get out my Anti-Flash ;)

Oh and HMAS MELBOURNE aka 05 was in IMAV (refit) on Garden Island Dry Dock NSW at teh time hence why she wasn't up here for Kakadu in 95 OD. It's a bit hard to "float" when you got a big hole in the side of the ship ! Although I did see them try that once after refit on STUART :P

5 "Patrol Boats" aka FFG's ? A photo which I'd think was taken "some time" before you joined up Kiza ! lol

Post 85

Semper Paratus???? " alway ready ".............. that very close to the US marines Semper Fi " always faithful "
