Howdy-ho boys and girls,

Back in March of 2006 we launched a donations campaign for Gamers-Underground to fund the purchase of a server that would not only host this very website and forum, but gaming servers for us all to play on and a Teamspeak server for your clans and public trash-talk.

We saw dramatic and unexpected community support and generosity; donations ranging from a mere few dollars through $200 - all equally appreciated and beneficial to the cause. We raised a whopping total of approximately $2500 for our new server, which has delivered many enjoyable nights with familiar faces playing CS:S, The Hunted, DOD:S and much more. Admittedly, the server probably hasn't gotten as much gaming use as we would all like, but this is largely due to the lack of truly brilliant games available. I think I speak for most of us when I say we're getting a little tired of CS.

There are however some big titles coming out this year which I know most of us are excited about including including Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Team Fortress 2. ETQW is as little as 6 weeks away, and we're dead-keen to have a server available for you to play on before you even get home with your copy. Even better than that, we'd love to not only run an ETQW server, but a TF2 one on top of that.

Unfortunately, our current server simply wouldn't cope with this load - with all the initial costs involved in getting our 1RU server we could only afford a lower end CPU (but still decent enough to handle CSS). The bottom line is that we're looking to upgrade, but Dan and I are unable to cover the costs ourselves - we continue to run Gamers-Underground non-profit, as we have for over 5 years. Because of this, we once again ask you to dig deep and show your support for the community we've all become so attached to.

The new server will include two AMD Opteron 275 Dual Core processors ($750) and an additional 2GB of RAM ($330).

The amount needed including postage is "065. Thanks to the guys at nAp and their monthly donation for their private GU CSS server, $250 is already on the table and makes our target amount that little bit easier to reach with only $815 remaining.

If you could make a donation of any amount towards this target, you would once again help deliver a breath of fresh air and ensure the future of our ability to provide you with the the servers and services we all want.

Off to a great start!

Post 6

isnt it kind of bad to be publicly displaying bank details....!!!

Post 7

Don't see why... what's the worst case scenario? Someone might secretly put money in there? Or give the details to someone else who might also put money in there? Ahhh! :)

Will be on for the next few weeks. More we get, the better the CPU's we get, and the better the server, less the chance of lag - etc etc...

Post 15

"50.00 just got donated from teh Lenko.

Post 16

Once again a prompt and overwhelming response. Keep it coming guys, every little bit helps! Thanks so much for your support!

As Dan said, if it looks like we can go the distance, we'll actually even create a "second target" which will mean crazy-powerful CPU's instead of these sorta-crazy-powerful ones! ;)

Edit: second ("optimal") target created, refresh first post. Better CPU choice and price will be finalised tommorrow.

Post 17

Crazy Powerful...as in...285's :)

Post 18

"im sorry insidious cant come to the forums right now, he is busy being reamed by the tax man, however once the tax man has finished extracting all the cash he thought he had saved, he would be more than happy to contribute what he can to this cause"

serious no lube nothin, just like a young man sliping in for a quicky....i feel so unsatisfied......

if the drive is still going next week i will contribute :D

Post 19

So what is the optimal target?

Post 20

$60 donated
Bring on TF2

Post 21

First post updated with targets.

Post 22

How about going to a quad core?

Post 23

It will already be quad, technically - two dual cores. Going true quad (8 cores in total) would cost far beyond what we could raise, from what I gather.

Post 24

for starters you'd need to replace the motherboard, and hence the memory, in addition to the cpus.

Post 28

Another few weeks mate I'd say mate. Longer I wait the more future proof our game server can be.

Post 29

If you run it till the 15th of May(get paid monthly), I should be able to put more $$ in.

Post 38

You guys rock! In just two nights we've almost reached our first target. The optimistic third target is almost entirely in reach too, with enough time up our sleeves to run the Cash Drive for another 3 weeks.

Post 39

Ill donate more in the coming weeks, strapped for cash hence only $20 atm.

Post 40

Pay week this week - Might even chip a % of that too.
I _really_ want a good server to frag people on in TF2 and ET and I just KNOW that the admins will keep it wanker free.

'tis why i love GU.

Server admin should be at least $200 or over. :p
I pledge another "50 by 15th of May.

P.S. Don't care about admin rights. I want to have an enjoyable time on the server with out lag spikes.
Also haven't moved in my new home so I haven't been hit with huge bills yet.
Therefore more money for GU.

Post 42

:P hahaha good timing.

one time i dont have money on my desk to give away :P
tax paying time sucks ass.

like everyone give me a fortnight i maybe able to find "0 here and there. :P

Post 43

To give you all some better idea of what we're aiming for with the third (highest) target...

The image below are examples of CPU performance in a server enviroment.

Currently we have a single Opteron 265 (1.8GHz). As you can see, the Intel Xeon 3.6GHz is trailing far, far behind even that.

What we have the opportunity to upgrade to is the CPU at the top, the Opteron 285... not just one, but two.

Keep that generosity rolling guys - we're almost at the finish line!

Post 44

question - what will happen to the old parts? will someone keep them, will they be upg for auction to go back into the GU funding?

Post 45

Not really as they didn't advertise the cut off date.

Post 50

Only old part will be 1x265 Opteron - and I'm happy to auction it off here and throw that cash back in. Not bad a bad idea really.

Post 51

Auction started for old part!

http://gamers-underground.com/forum/showthread.php?p=305387#post305387

It'll go to Ebay if no one here wants it!

Post 52

Keep this open for quite a while longer, and I'll be able to donate some. Definitely up for TF2 and ETQW, and playing games back on the home server once again.

Post 53

Bah bad timing, just bought a car, and have to do a few things to transfer the rego over...maybe next time.

add the swanky graph to the first post imo. needs more cowbell ;)

infact, just like, remove all those words. graph ftw.

Post 55

arent the quad-core opterons due out in a couple of months?
now that would be cool :D

Post 56

Already discussed, mepm. Too costly due to needing to replace the motherboard as well.

Post 97

Post 98

Or do what i just did. Fly in (in your case road trip) drink inhuman amounts of beer (of course no one will believe you capable of this feat) then leave :)

Everybody knows alcohol does not effect OD.

Just hit up evil, Dan, it should only take him like 30 minutes to get there in his car :P
