Dermerit Points For NT starting 1st Sept

however dissapointed that they are gutless and not doing double dermerit points for long weekends.

Start on 0 - get to 12 and you lose the licence for 3months.

wow 12 you guys are lucky in A.C.T. iirc we only have 4. Not that I have an A.C.T. License.

Basic (Full) licence holder accumulates 12 or more points in a 3 year period or less (from date of first offence) = driver licence suspended for 3 months or greater.

Increases from there.

4 is for P and L platers in 12 months.

most of the things you get demirit points for cost 3 anyway. so 4 trafic offences in 3years.

bah.. it will not stop the road toll..

I never liked them, had nothing to do with the car rules, but when they took my open limit away, they made it personal (at least that's how it felt).

I heard a story that the "federal money" that we were supposed to receive for imposing speed limits and demerits had a requirement that it be matched dollar for dollar by the Territory Government. The story said that they didn't match it and so didn't get any money.

can anyone confirm/deny this?

the federal government (recommended by the national competition council among others) were going to withhold funding from your state government if speed limits weren't imposed.

sounds like your state government is as retarded as ours here in QLD but it wasn't their fault - they really had no say in the matter.

This debate on open speed limits and now on demerit systems is farsical. Oh my god they took away my freedom. "You Labour bastards, you will pay"is always the cry.....if the liberals were in they would have done the same. No political party is perfect no matter how much some people may claim.
As for my personal opinion which is the same as any others 'personal opinion'.
So what if we don't have open speed limits, 130km on the open highway is fine, knowing full well that everyone will push the limit from time to time. A demerit system, and yes it is another revunue spinner, well maybe it will get some of the dickheads off the road, and yes we do have more than our fair share.
I have driven for long enough (27yrs) both on road and off road around Australia and other places around the world, not to mention on a race track. I am not perfect just another with an opinion.

This is true, however the bigger problem is still education and not handing out licences to everyone who clearly cant drive for crap but technically fluked the driving test.

If the spent less time stressing about whether you indicated before or after you checked your mirrors and more time actually teaching you WTF you're supposed to be doing there would be way less problems to begin with.

When I was 16/17 my Dad took me out the back of his property and taught me car control etc and made sure I knew damn well what I was doing before he let me go for my licence - it was also manual or not at all.

Which leads me to another point - how can someone who cant handle a manual allowed to drive on the public roads? If you cant ****ing co-ordinate clutch and gear stick you shouldnt be allowed in control of a vehicle because you are a massive liability if you have to anything more than accelerate and brake at some point.

I vote for compulsory re-testing (even written is fine by me) for people over 40 and or Palmerston residents in relation to ****ing roundabouts. Seriously, how ****ing hard are they to figure out?!

I vote to revoke all licences, make a much more rigorous, appropriate driving test. I'll happily retake the test....

Went to Darwin MVR to renew his license.
They gave him 5 years more on his license without an eye-test.
He's over 70 and has no peripheral vision.

I did my test in an auto and I drive manuals all the time

Theres this thing called defensive driving where you as the driver work to prevent accidents.

I must admit, they are bad but I think its NT in general ..

I persoanlly like the ones that pull into the median strips to turn right/left across in front of oncomming traffic and fail to stop before coming into the lanes .. (coonawarra) I was driving the patrol and feared for that guys life, I would have farked him up.

People who CANT CO-ORDINATE A MANUAL. As in people who's minds ****ing explode from having to push a clutch, take their foot off the throttle AND move a stick at the same time.

Im talking about the people who drive an automatic not because they are lazy or because thats what they ended up with or they medically cant drive a manual but because they cant handle the amount of things happening at once that changing gears requires.

My brother is a perfect example - 2 years he's had his licence, he still cannot drive a manual. There is nothing medically wrong with him. He is physically capable of the required actions. He's just too useless and unco-ordinated to manage it. In the case of an emergency he also mashes both brake and accelerator into the floor. Edit: This also cost him one car already 2 weeks after he bought it and resulted in getting tboned in another car.

People like my brother should NOT be allowed on the road. They have no co-orindation and if they ever got into an emergency situation they have no ****ing chance in hell because they cant handle all that happening at once.

I know plenty of manual drivers who have been in accidents and I have never been in one!!! I do drive manual if needed but I'm primarily an auto driver (my car is auto) I picked auto cause I'm lazy and it's easy and I don't like to add extra thinking to my driving :D

Just because it's different doesn't make it wrong :/ Manual drivers are no better then automatic ones. In fact I'd bet the majority of accidents are caused by manual drivers.

Its not because Automatic drivers cant drive. My current car is the first car in 4 years that wasn't an Auto. There is nothing wrong with owning and driving an auto if you have one because you are lazy, or like me thats just how the car you bought was - its Auto drivers who drive auto's cause they too unco to drive a manual that the issue lies with.

I've had this car for about 4 yrs now - but every car prior were all manuals.
Manuals are alot more fun to drive, that's for sure. But Its easier to eat a Brekky wrap in an auto :p

I always pull over but talking on hands free is no more distracting than talking to the person sitting in the passenger seat.

Edit: Looking over those - at least you guys arent going to get fined under "Anti Hooning" for having your stereo too loud. Down here a loud stereo can be fined as Anti hooning (No standard measurement, up to the officer to decide if in his opinion its too loud). 3 times and you lose your car.

Also down here 45k+ over the speed limit = instant licence loss.
