I'd hate to think about what the cost would be... Quote: Telstra unveils new wireless broadband
ALMOST a year after launching its Next G network, Telstra has bolstered its wireless broadband service, promising download speeds comparable to most wired home services.
"Today there is now very little to distinguish between the speed of a wireless and a wired broadband service,'' Telstra BigPond group managing director Justin Milne said.
The new range of Next G wireless internet cards are promising to deliver download speeds of up to 6Mbps and upload of speeds of 1.3Mbps.
This will allow users within the network to download a standard MP3 song in as little as 30 seconds.
The Telstra Mobile Turbocard and Bigpond Wireless Broadband 7.2 cards will be available in ExpressCard and USB format, and will work on Windows 2000, XP and Vista, and Mac OS X 10.4.
Existing Telstra customers with Turbo 3 Series cards can upgrade their card over the internet to make use of the faster download speeds, but uploads will remain unchanged at 384Kbps.
Telstra has also announced a further upgrade of its Next G network to include remote regions of Western Australia and Tasmania, including The Spirit of Tasmania ferry.
just the beginning too, its gonna be even faster real soon :D i don't mind paying for it, it comes in handy.
i doubt ppl who use their phones as the modem will benefit from the speed boost though as the phones cant handle those speeds, so best to get a card/stick/modem
that said, i certainly wouldn't consider it for a permanent home connection, too xpensive if u are using it every day awesome for when away from home though
yep 14 i think. bear in mind though its not their fault this time, they are holding back the speeds due to 2 things, hardware, and cdma. until they can get rid of cdma 14 just isn't viable
Quote from rec;322522: By cheaper you mean still ridiculously expensive, but less ridiculous. We're talknig quasi-ridiculous? :P Cheaper is Cheaper. ie less then it was :)
Anyway, its only getting better.
Better Plans with more value are coming.
Faster Speeds ie 14.4Mbps/5.8Mbps. Now its 14.4Mbps/1.9Mbps
Device are getting the firmware as you see in thread starter to do 7.2Mbps/1.9Mbps.
Id use one of these over ADSL8M and ADSL2+ for uploads for Development.
As Development can be small updates and changes, these plans and speeds make it viable to do work anywhere I need it
Quote from Aegis;322546: cool, so when do they improve phonecall response times? ie: call telstra customer service for whatever - and NOT wait 50mins to talk to someone.
The difference is the other ones were always available at potentially those speeds at the time they were announced. Telstra actively marketed 14.4MBPS when it was literally impossible to use it or obtain that.
Sure the chances of full ADSL2 speeds etc were extremely slim but thats still a far cry from literally impossible and only 1/4 the speed and now years later 50% the speed.
Here is how that works:
You ask about a car, the manufacturer tells you it can go up to 100km/h.
You buy it then they tell you "Oh hey yeah, the engine can support up to 100km/h but the running gear in the car cant go above 25km/h - sorry our bad, but dont worry in 4 years youll be able to go 50 and one day youll be able to go 100."
Quote from RakeR;322594: That has nothing to do with this thread.
yes it does. phone support is part of any service offering. don't expect to come in here and be a shill for telstra (you work for them, you're a shill if you want to be or not.) and not be subject to responses like that.

Blow out your cap in under 2 days with Telstra NextG Fraudband
New tel$tra Slogan
"Making products and services Crappier and more expensive then ever and forcing you to use our shitty service which will make life more stressful"
No adsl in your area ? No worries use our new ShittynextG network as an alternative and pay 3 times the price then you would on normal Practical Fraudband.
well all i can say is i like nextG, and for me its really not that expensive as i dont use it to download huge files - its only around 30 bucks extra a month for me on my phone bill and it gives me the convenience of broadband anywhere i go.
if i did want to download huge file though, i would just go on an hourly plan instead. unlimited downloads, just got a hourly limit instead.
no-one else wants to spend the $ in darwin for 3G, even though they are happy to advertise it in their phone shops
Quote from jabsy;322679: What exactly does that have to do with how long you wait in a phone queue for "customer service"?? Has nothing to do with phone queue customer service. Like this thread.
It is to do with the NextG Network being: - faster then any other wireless 3G network in Australia
- having 2 Million Sq Kilometre of coverage using over 5800 Base stations.
- covering 98.8% of the population
- remote working from your office at speeds similar to ADSL
- Mobile TV
- Video Calling
- etc etcQuick note to Korny: How about you stop bashing Telstra and actually use information that supports your rants instead of making shit up.
NB. Telstra can charge whatever they deem appropiate to the market. If the market is paying for a service they need why should they make it cheaper. The NextG Network wasnt built to provide unlimited data usage, just like BigPond. If you want something cheap go else where. Just dont complain about it when its. 1. not available. 2. doesnt work. 3. no support. 4. Etc Etc.
When you buy computers or monitors or accessories, do you pay for the cheap stuff and expect it to perform like the top line products? The answer is usually no. You pay for quality or premium and expect just that.
The NextG network is one of the only ones like it in the world. Covering the most amount of geographical coverage and offering the most amount of services of it kind. Plus it was paid for by Telstra's Shareholders, not some government handout.
Anyway I know Im going to be bashed. So bring it if you want. I support Telstra 100%

fixed. customer support is also a 'feature' of the nextg network, since support is part of the package.

Love the way you guys all speak, talk about drilled into your heads. Marketing must be really up front at Telstra :p
have i experienced customer support? yes, yes i have. the voice prompt service is ridiculous.
as you mentioned above, you pay a premium for telstra services, part of what is expected to be offered when paying a premium for something is good after sales service.
i spent forty five minutes on hold two days ago, after my nextg phone decided it wasn't going to make/receive calls or sms. didn't actually get through in the end, couldn't be chained to my desk any longer so had to leave. forty five minutes.
so really, just stop trying to debundle customer service from the nextg product, because it's rather intrinsic to it.
Telstra by far have one of the shittiest customer support centres around. Lets make a comparison:
My boss spent the last 2 weeks trying to get through to someone about a billing error. After the automated system randomly hung up on him several times he got put on hold for no less than 30 minutes per phone call. When someone did finally answer they took a message and said theyd call back. This has happened about 6 times now in the last fortnight, and we havent had a single call back from anyone. At the end of the 2 weeks we have achieved nothing and are not one step closer to getting this fixed.
Now lets look at my ISP - Westnet. My home PC got a mass mailer and started spamming in the middle of the night while I was asleep. They called and informed me of this and suggested several scans etc. I thanked them and told them Id clean it out and to call me back if it happens again. Well they did call me back citing Id asked them to. I called back later when I noticed packets were dropping after I reformatted - the lines were busy, the automated service told me to leave a message. I left one and received no less than 3 follow up calls to make sure everything was going. The first within 2 hours of leaving my message, one the following morning, and then a 3rd that evening.
Edit: I should also add I got an exact description and explanation for the problem as well as an apology.
By the way, they werent redundant followups either, they were each a followup to the previous call.
THAT is what customer support SHOULD be everywhere. There is no excuse for otherwise.
Quote from Wrathlon;322842: Telstra by far have one of the shittiest customer support centres around. Lets make a comparison:
Ok lets make another comparison.
Westnet: 10's of thousands of customers Telstra: Millions of Customers.
However, some of Telstra customers have great experiences with customer service and some dont.
Lots of times its not being able to find the right people to handle the query. And also the time in which people call into the call centres. I find during the morning is a good time to try and get through as it seems less busy.
Anyway, all I can say is get him to keep trying and make sure he takes down an employee number so he has someone he can contact if it continues. Plus if it doesnt get resolved or the person isnt helpful get him to ask for a Team Leader to take it higher.
Quote from RakeR;322844: From your previous response you said you thought the voice prompt system was ridiculous.
So in our effort of making customer service more customised to you we have choosen to use our numbered options.
If you would like to speak to someone that understands your frustration please hold on the line as they will be with you in a moment.
/1 sec hold music.
Yes what seems to be your enquiry this evening?
Anyway on a more serious note.
Did you get your problem sorted out? else what are the problems you are experiencing with the phone/network?
as far as i can tell it was just a congested network/coverage outage. it was fine the next day, but for the four hours or so i was trying it was all but impossible to make a call. one in ten would start ringing but would cut out after a few seconds. sms's would take about half an hour to send.
I went to the telstra shop yesterday and they didnt know anything about the new plans "wtf" i went to the darwin city one and they knew all about it, they even gave me the information on it.
not only that, cas tried to charge me $650 outright for the equipment and still expected me to go into a contract wtf
Darwin city said i could purchase the 7 turbo card for $350 and go on a month to month
wtf is the go why would it be cheaper in the city then at cas
i was thinking telstra = Expensive but telstra shop darwin city = Cheap ?
