Im very Keen on an American Staffy Or a Siberian Husky. Love 'em both.

I've found a fair few pure breds from registered breeders for 800 - 1500.

A husky in darwin is ****ing ridiculous dude. Why would you put one through the strain of the heat in darwin? They are double coated dogs for christs sake

They climatise and im going to treat it well and have everything for it, im not going to throw it in the sun and forget about it. I know a few people up here who have them, the vets check them out and they say they're fine and fit.

I will have what I need to keep it happy.

Husky coats just thin to compensate for the heat, its no more stressful than any other dog, just be prepared to have a metric **** tonne of dog hair everywhere.

I know it's completly different to what you were saying, but look into a Basenji, they are the most awesome dogs ever :P

If you want I could probably organzie a play date with my folks ones so you can see how awesome they really are :P

oh yeah, they look pretty cool. lol. But they look pretty small, well smaller then I want anyway.

You think you can manage the maintenance but can you handle the daily brushing, the dog hair inside the house, the rental allowances? Big dogs are significantly harder to get on a rental property for some ****ed up reason.

Thick coat in Darwin - just say no. They don't so much "acclimatise" more like suffer constantly that their coat is shedding. Humidity is big sufferance.

Personally, Staffy ftw. Not just in training but for general company.

Do note lack of variety in Breeders in Darwin.

Go RSPCA. I only got my gsd pup from a breeder because nobody wanted him as he was the runt of the litter.

Apparently the runt of the litter is the best pick, because they will be the loyal ones and listen to you alot better. I dunno.

Husky, not Malamute, I like the fact that huskys are alot leaner they look fitter.

I don't mind the daily brushing, thats why I have a Mrs :P haha jk.

I really don't mind the maintainance, Gives me something else to do and some company that doesn't whinge.

Also I'd prefer to put you towards an amstaff, experiences I've had with huskies at our training club (200+ dogs regularly) is that they're very stubborn headed, the owners also usually stop attending because of being embarrassed at being challenged by their dogs by not listening.

They're always vying for top position. It doesn't sound hard now but when you're experiencing it for yourself it's one of the goddamn hardest things in the world to deal with.

That said three(ed: learn2count) of the senior trainers have Staffies (a couple others have gsd, another three have Great Danes, and few weird exotics), and I end up leaving training wanting to put their dogs in boot to take home with me.

lol nice. I really would like an amstaff, thats what im going for, But the Mrs thinks they look too mean and she REALLY won't let me get a pitbull, but she will put up with the Amstaff.

Where would I be able to get a 6 - 10 week old amstaff in darwin though?

Extremely loyal, very chilled out, will sleep all day but are up and about when you want them to be. Very low maintenance - no grooming, they only require love and attention. Also perfect for a hot climate (originating in Africa).

7 weeks is the youngest I'd go if it can be helped, 8weeks is better, pups pickup a lot of life skills from mum and siblings. There should be some unwanted litters passing through the RSPCA occasionally, best to call in because sometimes they have litters on hold out of public view unannounced.

We got our Persian cat from the rspca by camping their centres and websites.

I had the same question myself but in the end I was left with a dog anyway. But supposedly neutered dogs are the best in attitude.

Haha. I don't think anyone called you a dickhead, nor did anyone say you can't have a husky. I was just saying its a stupid idea. It's a public forum and people usually post their opinions on it. Cry less.

Yeah nps. From what I've read they're fine in hot climates anyways - the idea just doesn't make sense to me.

Some constructive advice - If you're a first time dog owner I would talk to a vet. Talk about your lifestyle, what dogs you like, what experience you've had etc etc. Breeders/dog owners advice comes second as they're going to be biased. There are a lot of considerations when finding a dog to suit your lifestyle - more so than just their appearance.

My mate bought a pug-shitzu cos he thought it was 'cool'. Little thing came from a shit gene-pool and got the worst traits (health wise) from both breeds. It needs "0,000 in surgery to fix its problems.

Oh and don't get a pup before the 8 week mark - anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't have a clue! When you get the pup make sure you take it to puppy school and get it socialising asap! I found RSPCA training after puppy school very helpful also. Good luck.

Yeah when you decide keep in contact with the rest of us, a few of us have quite a bit of experience with our pups growing up now so there's a fair(lot) you can pick up from the rest of us.

Also on overclockers australia one of the pet forum regulars is an actual Veterinarian, and he's only too happy to contribute usually.

Hey don't know how much this might help but a friend of a friend use to own a Malamute, and there were a few owners/breeders of Malamutes and Huskies who use to meet up around Karama regularly and walk their dogs together - That was a year or so ago but if your still hard up for information could help ^^.

O btw my friends Malamute was fine in the heat, it just shed regularly to compensate, so I really don't think that kind of dog suffers in the tropics.

Yeah weird thing is the little rat dog is the one that really seems to get affected by that, Mr. GSD was chewing on the towels while the little one was rolling around on the ground pawing his head.
