On news tonight PAWA state that the Nothern Suburbs may be without power for the next 7 days if the Casuarina sub station fails again. Backup generators are 7 days from arriving and they sugest we buy our own generators until then.
The counter disaster team has been activated.
This could get nasty if the power fails.

but northern suburbs only refers to some of rapid creek back through to wulagi....surely they could reroute some of it......
would be one of the very fews times in my life ( if only) that i can say that im a not upset to be living la vida karama

Mr Macrides said residents should prepare as if they were preparing for a blackout in the cyclone season.
He suggested "buying batteries, radios ... looking at whether you should have your own back-up power supply, going out and buying a generator."
Mr Macrides also suggested looking at gas cookers and lights - or even arranging to stay at a friend's house.
"That's obviously an option if they find it unbearable living in their own homes," he said.
Large generators are being delivered from interstate while the substation is repaired - but Mr Macrides said another mishap before they were installed mid-next week could last for several days.
Essential Services Minister Rob Knight said the counter-disaster committee had been recalled.
"We're preparing for a worst-case scenario here, given that we have a vulnerable power system at Casuarina itself, and people should be preparing as they would for a cyclone," he said. "It's a problem we've got, a very vulnerable substation there, and we're working very hard to fix it.
"We've got an obligation ... to make sure everything is covered with respect to law and order, food supply, shelter, education, health, all those aspects."

Id magine that the power generation from Channel Island's gas fired generators has a fair amount of conditioning and sine wave shaping to produce a "clean" AC source. If the generator has a square wave output, which most still do, then serious damage could result to sensitive equipment. Most fridges and aircons and fans should (dont take my word, RTFM on the product to see if its NOT reccomended for square wave generators) should run ok. Some PC PSU's should be of good enough quality and build to take a square wave for a short amountof time, again, id be careful. So i find myself actually supproting Korny on this one. Be aware, be careful, and if all else fails, run the gen output through a decent UPS to clear up the incoming wave, ready for digestion by your PC.
NOTE: Im not running a pc of a direct gen set output, ever.

I'd expect so too. But apparently Darwin's power is actually pretty unclean by national standards. Not surprising considering the conditions.
The fact is that if Darwin hadn't been propped up by successive political and strategic considerations, it just wouldn't have been viable. Too far, too harsh on infrastructure.

and if the power goes out for more than 1 to 2 days how long will the UPS setups etc in teh cas exchange last for??
Im guessing that there will be a lack of phones etc, mobile towers will eventually drop out if not powered and im assuming most of the northern suburb local exchanges go back to the cas exchange first?? - before going down south.
So im guessing all of us will be without phones, mobiles ( in certain areas) and no internets!!!!!!
That will suck jsut a tad - there will be a massive amount of downloading going on after the power is fixed if thats the case :p
and OH MY GOD no shopping at Cas square oh noes!!!!!!! what to do on week days for the Rudd surfing team and weekend for kiddies
They are getting industrial generators, not UPS. :)

Is the power going to be shut down in the northern suburbs?
No. The Casuarina Zone Substation that provides power to around 15,000 customers suffered two equipment failures over the past few weeks. We are putting backup systems in place in case there is another outage. There are no plans to shut anything down.
What if there is another outage?
If the same fault happens again it could take about 10 hours to get the power restored. The worst case scenario is that the power could stay off until backup generators are in place.Map of affected areas

Generators will provide an immediate backup to the power supply. They are coming from interstate, and should be in place within a week. A new switchboard is being manufactured overseas that will fully restore the substation to its pre-accident condition. This is expected to take about eight weeks.

Yeah, its pretty piss poor, even the hospital has a couple of that trailor generator/light sets around the grounds, im sure they wont be happy if the power fails, having to bag every one and manually pump for a couple of days will sure be fun...
They should hire lenko, I hear his record for manually pumping is 5 1/2 days. without a break.

erm... wasn't that the condition it was in before everything blew up? wouldnt it be better to say something like 'bring the substation up to spec' or even 'make it work the way it's meant to'? baaaaad wording
