Mate on holiday from Adelaide sat me down and explained to me the significance (idiocy) of having not seen it yet.
The conclusion? Truly excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed it. But I can't help being a whiny bitch about its reputation. It's hailed as greatest movie ever after all.
Movies like Scarface and Blade Runner seem to have grown to popularity, being ahead of their time when released. There are many moments where The Godfather feels as though it could have been made in recent times, which says a lot about the vision and production, but overall it merely feels like a peek into the best of Hollywood's last generation.
Anyone else having only seen it in recent years have any strong opinions on it?
I haven't seen it but it's one of those movies I would like to see. I just finished watching all three Lord of the Rings yesterday on blu ray. truly Awesome movies!
The Orginal story was written by Mario Puzo the made into a screenplay by Puzo, Coppola and Towne before finally being directed by Francis Ford Coppola back in 1972. It was the pinnacle of cinamatography back in the day as it portrayed 10 years in the life of the Corleone Family. It brought to light a darker side of America that everyone new about but was to affraid to say. It received Acadamy Awards for Best Actor, Best Picture and Best Adapted screenplay and was one of a very few films to be selected for preservation in the United Staes National Film Registry. It is ranked as the second gretest film in American History behind Citezen Kane. In a nutshell it was the catalyst for many more movies and television series throughtout the world that showed the underbelly of society. I remember writing a paper about it in school many years ago.
lol..........Yes beleive it or not I did do some schooling in the 70's and even just a little in the eighties. Although I still remember Saturday Double Matinees and " would fill you up with lollies....rofl
I had watched the godfather many years ago. Around the early 2000 era. It was the first time I had watched the film due to the endless raving I heard on the net about it. Unfortunately for me, I felt the movie hadn't aged very well. i was already spoiled with gratuitous violence and cliched (in a good way) portrayal of mobsters. I can see though why audiences in that era would have gasped in marvel at it. Nothing was like it.

The Godfather is and always will be some of the greatest storying telling the world has seen, and what can you say about Marlon Brando? fucking legendary. you can never actually say what movie is the one true Greatest movie ever, because they effect us in different ways, but this is the number 2 on imdb.com(Behind Shawshank). and definately some of the greatest cinema ever made. i can't believe you guys haven't seen it up till now. did you watch just the first or 2 and 3 as well? they aren't as epic, no Marlon Brando for one, but still excellent.

call the coppers. he is a legend. couldnt give a shit what he ate, who he fucked, and how he didnt care about the planet. he made that movie what it is. and its one of the best. you figure it out.
rec, OD, jimmy and I were on the Gold Coast at the beginning of the year for the Big Day Out. OD and I were sharing a hotel room, and one evening while we're sitting around and drinking (as we did for the whole trip) OD gets all serious and tells me he's got something important to tell me.
I got a little concerned that maybe he's going to confess his long-held gay crush on me, but no - in a hushed voice with downcast eyes he admitted he'd never seen The Godfather. It was ok though, I told him, because I hadn't seen it either. He was visibly relieved to know he wasn't alone in the world.
Just then there's a knock at the door and rec and jimmy enter. OD tells them that he's blown away because there's two dudes in the same room who have never seen the Godfather. Then rec tell him that he hasn't either. OD was stunned. jimmy pipes up and said that HE hasn't seen it, either. OD's brain explodes.
Now, 4 months later rec and I have both caught up and know what all the fuss is about. Will jimmy or OD be next???
