Say goodbye to almost a quarter of your hdd space if you do. Ask yourself a question: is anything wrong with your system? is it crashing horribly? dying? if its behaving itself, no real reason to upgrade.

....i don't think you should atm, wait a little bit, get a bigger HDD and think about some more ram....

Win98SE is ok, good for games but not really great for much of anything else...

XP seemed pretty sweet @ first glance.. But it's still based on NT and still does not run many old games.. The mouse problem is still there.. :

I too have an 8 gig drive. Keep Win9x if you wish to play games both dos and windows based as NT, 2000 & XP use NTFS and you will need to aquire patches for all of your games and likely your hardware to use them as well as if you like 3d games not all formats will work. Ala. my dad attempting to use 2000 with his Geforce 2 and games such as Turok 2, Medal of Honour and Return to castle wolfestien.

KEEP WIN 98!

384Mb RAM is the sweet spot for XP...512 is better

With 256 you will find you will spend plenty of time waiting for memory swapping to disk

Im running 2000 and it gives you the choice of NTFS or FAT32. the only time with 2000 when you must run NTFS(i believe) is when you have a HDD that is partitioned with a drive bigger than 32 GB, I'm using a 40GB drive partitioned in half and both are running FAT32

Uhm, why do people run and hide in fear from NTFS. its just a filesystem. your game doesn't know jack shit about the underlying file system. games don't need patches just because you run on NTFS. The game asks the operating system for the file, not the file system directly. The operating system knows all about how to handle the disks it has access to (well, it should), so takes care of all that business, and lets the game be a game.

Agreed paladin, next time I re-install 2K (Ill be old and grey by then) Ill choose NTFS again its so much better for security. About the old games problem I use Dos for those….oooow Heretic, Bioforge and Ultimate Domain 8)
