Hey guys, my latest problem is with AvP2.
I upgraded my vidcard from a voodoobanshee16meg to a new gf2 32meg, and avp2 runs better on my old piece of shit. I used to run in 800x600x32 in medium detail and it ran perfectly! But now it runs like absolute crap chugging 2 hell, etc on the exact same settings. This is all in WinXP btw...

Any ideas why?

First stop should be the latest drivers for the card in mind... hopefully you aren't using the ones supplied by XP [Blocked image]

knew i forgot 2 add something 2 my post =P

yeah i already got detonator xp 23.11 and all the windows update stupid things.. ?!?!

...

?!?!?!

Post 4

is your system old as when i bort my gf2mx and put it on my k62 350 it ran crap had to put my viper11 back in and threw gf2 in cupboard till i upgraded 3 months later and the same gf2 was "50 cheaper doh!!

Post 5

Go to 21.83 drivers... The 23.11's are simply bullshit drivers, regardless of what everybody says.

Make sure you've also tweaked the Vid card settings.

Post 6

Hmm... changing drivers don't do anything...

Could it just be that I've got winxp? I've heard every1 saying that winxp is crap for games... Maybe I should put win98 on and run as a dual OS again (i did it before but got sick of win98's constant illegal ops) and test the performances in both OS's???

use 2000 drivers

err the win2K drivers are the same drivers for XP

Post 9

It is not XP, in most cases it is the user or his equiptment.
I am yet to find a game that don't work sweet on my XP. Sometimes you do have to think a bit about your install.
AVP2 was just a straight install auto detect and i have completed the marine and the alien and just starting the predator............

Post 10

Is it running in Direct3D or in OpenGL....?

The banshee cards love Glide and Direct3D but don't like OpenGL as much....GF2 cards are the opposite, maybe its running in the wrong mode....

Just a suggestion

Post 11

well i think it might just be his system being stubborn again, he has got a P2 350.

sly_fox 2k drivers and xp r the same

BS i say to that if u configer u 3d bendmark to use different drivers (u will need the mod 4 it) u will see Xp drivers r slower by 15-35fps on the Matrix seen i run Xp with 2k drivers no probs!!!

Post 13

Win XP contains drivers taken from win2k and ME, most were a direct shift - thing is, the *standard* graphics drivers in XP are very old, and not very efficient - combine that with XP containing 20% system bandwidth for itself, and you have the latency you described Prowler. Fixes exist for all these, if you know where to look. Nvidia refresh fix, good graphics drivers etc etc.

Post 14

on the nvida site 2k + xp drivers are the same.

Cc does xp run dos games ?

was ure banshee AGP or PCI ensure u have installed AGP DRIVERS!!!

lol, i ain't a retart,
seqo, processor is irrelervent, as i said, it ran perfectly fine in winxp with my voodoo, but runs like with my gf2 with the same settings in winxp... yes winxp drivers = win2k drivers and i've got the latest and all that shit, and yes i have an agp video card...

avp2 only runs in direct3d, using lithtech engine otherwise i would use opengl, i get like 60fps+ in CS in 1152x800 running opengl and q3a i get the same in the same res.

Post 16

The thing that a lot people dont realise is that monitor is a huge part of your frame rate..

You might be getting 100 Frames in cs.. But if your monitor can only do 60hz in that resolution guess what ure actually seeing.. 60fps.. just keep that in mind when ure upgrading your computer..

I saw on vorlies comp a HUGE 21" monitor running @ 60hz .. :|

Post 17

try winding back the resolution and such and see if you can stabilize it - if you minimize all the graphics settings and it still plays like crap, its not the graphics card. Keep in mind that AVP2 is alot more resource hungry than counterstrike.

Post 18

Dude, it is merely the fact that the graphics card needs a better computer to optimize it properly, stick with your old one until you upgrade

Post 19

yeah i tried that (setting res down).

i set it all the way down to 640x480 (the lowest) and put the graphics quality on extra low (lol) and it ran alright, but when an alien came along... well... about 2fps!!!

and yeah flammable, i know about the whole monitor refresh rate thing =P

Post 20

I wasnt accusing.. [Blocked image]

Post 21

No dude, what I'm saying is that you computer dont like the graphics card at all, no matter what you put the settings on, the card needs more oompf to get going, stick with your old card!

Post 22

hmm.... oh well then if that's the case, then shit happens =D

i'll just keep this card in (cs runs beautifully and so does q3a) so i'm happy with that

thanks for the input anyway guys =D

Post 23

aye, I have to agree with ZeReaper - it sounds like the bottleneck isn't the card, its gotta be something else thats pulling it down.
