Completely off the topic I'd just like to tell you all I can play the saxophone!

Simon, I wanna install Linux on rakers p4 machine (our server) so we can run dedicated servers properly, what version do you recommend???

Post 2

OK I am assuming that your not fully conversant with linux.
Hell I have been playing with it for a couple of years now, and I know I only know a mere scratch of what it contains.

So for a more warm and fuzzy linux experience. And grief free installation.

Use redhat.

I hope ( free time permitting ) to try gentoo on the weekend.

Gentoo Linux in a paragraph

Gentoo Linux is a versatile and fast, completely free Linux distribution for x86, PowerPC, Sparc and Sparc64 that's geared towards Linux power users.

Note:Reaps DO NOT try Gentoo. It isnt (windows)user friendly. But supposidly its bloody fast.

Ohhhhh, but I wanna play

WHERES MY SIG BITCH!?!?!?!?!?!??!

Post 4

Play if U want.. doesnt worry me..

Oh and I am going to troll thru some CD backups I have @ home.

I used to run a siggy back in my tribing days of the grim reaper, but instead of a scythe, he had a vulcan rail gun in his hands..

I am gonna play with that a bit for your siggy mate. So just chill the fu<k out bitch.

Post 5

redhat 6.0???

Post 6

It will do mate..

Tho I am sure someone here can link U up with a more modern Distro..

Pal, Cth, Aravi any of U got current distro iso's for this likable lad ??

He must have a DivX or 3 that U havent got as a fair trade..

*looks around*

Post 7

I got redhat 7.3 ?

Post 8

Cool Creamy..

Ok who has the 3300Km LAN cable..

Post 9

I can recommend RH7.3

Got mine sitting in the corner.

Im running HLDS1109c with Adminmod, Statsme, timebomb, sounds etc.
Stable as a rock (ask Sly about it.....had 20 players on it for 14 hours or so at last LAN and it didn't miss a beat)

If you need any advice in setting it up ICQ or PM me, Ive installed it like a billion times now.

RH7.3 installs like a breeze

Ran Mandrake8.2 prior to this....possibly easier to install...but I like the feel of RH better. Both are fine for a CS server

Post 10

i have 7.2 sitting next to me, just rebuilt my work machine yesterday as a linux box out of boredom. i can get a copy of 7.3 soon enough if you want that, tho i know of no real compelling reason to do so.

redhat graphical installation is really quite straightforward, you honestly dont have to know a goddamn thing.

once the box is up and running, do you intend to play with it via keyboard/monitor connected to the machine? if not, get your hands a copy of a secure shell program for windows, securecrt or putty spring to mind (the first is commercial, the second is freeware and fits on a floppy).

i do hereby offer my 7 years of linux experience in aid should anyone wish, wee.

Post 11

I downloaded 7.3 (mmmmm 1.5MB conection) and will install it on server machine a bit later on tonight, around 5:30-6ish so if you ladies come online you acn gimme a freakin hand setting the muthabitch up in the west side dont go there girlfrien.....wtf? Shit I get sidetracked easily, anywho, bout 5:30 tonight you can all do my work for me, NO BUTTS!

The secure shell is the way to go.. But other than that just start it and unplug everything..
With adminmod on, U dont have to directly access the server.

And Hmmm I now know another mind to pick when I hit a snag with something so brain numbingly obvious I cant see it for quids.

On the topic of secure SSH I would HIGHLY recommend F-Secure.

It comes as a suite. It has a normal console client, but more importantly it has a file transfer client that works using SSH.

Knowing how much of a pain FTP and SAMBA can be this makes things so easy. Fire it up, login and you've got a GUI that will let you browse your linux box and drag and drop files to it. Very easy.

I use it for all my upgrades and stuuf....you can even edit files on your winblows box and then drop em in the right directory.

One of the best utilities I have ...

drop me a line if you want more info

Post 24

Secure SSH? i'll have some of that with my ATM Machine. sounds like what putty + scp do. samba can be a pain from time to time, enlightenment can be totally gorgeous with a bit of effort, etc. ramble. rant. etc.

Post 25

OK, I have red hat installed, blah blah blah, I went through the configuration of an adsl internet connection, it connects, but thats all, I cant ping, I cant chat, I cant browse web, nothing, what am I doing wrong?

For a Linux n00b who wants to play HL, CS and TFC which version of Linux is better, I like the sound of Suse 8.0 what do you think :?:

Can Wine run games like Diablo2 and Total Annihilation successfully :?:

Post 27

i'd simply say not slackware.

my experience has been with that, and redhat, and well yeah, for ease of use redhat leaves slack for dead (mind you, i haven't tried slack for a bit, could be wrong).

debian has nice package management, and you can keep your system up to date VERY easily.

also, i don't play games under wine/linux/X, for the simple reason that i have a windows box for games, my work computer is linux only (easier to get work done with fewer distractions, in theory), and my linux box at home has no monitor or keyboard, and hasn't for quite some years.

that said,

here is a list of games that have been tested to work under WineX, D2, HL etc are all listed as working so apparently it is possible to get them running.

Post 28

Me currently has Windows > Looks @ Linux > Linux cant play many games properly > Looks @ Mac OSX > OS needs Mac hardware > Mac hardware is too expencive > Second hand Mac herdware either too slow or expencive > Me waits for Lindows patiently > Me looks @ Windows > Me has done a loop and ended back where I started

Post 29

I have the .isos for Mandrake 8.1

Oh and regarding game support

TA should work fine, I had a few problems last time I tried it but nothing that couldn't be overcome. After I rebuild my kernel I will get up and try again.

Diablo II supposedly works now (used to have problems). Another site that lists games that Wine supports (user maintained - you post about your experiences, it also covers more than games) is here

Although, Odyssey, knowing what video card you have. You may want to read through some of the documentation here first
