Hi All,

I have put together a file sharing server for the DGA Lan.

I have it on the net as well so ICQ me 123450827 to check it out.

So please download Edonkey2000 from www.edonkey2000.com

Then Go into options and add your username.

Then click on shared - go thru the tree and select the directories you want to share and then press OK - wait while it hashes all the files - takes sometime the first time. Then bam you are ready.

But if you need any assistance between now and the lan please ICQ me or call me 0407766461.

I hope this makes file sharing a whole new experience.

Thanks everyone and I look forward to you joining my server to make thing better and faster.

I have a local test server on the net ready for you to try

Post 4

Please Everyone share all the files first before connecting to my server.

The hashing takes a while so please be patient

Thanks

is it ok if i just share shit?

i will have a 40 gigger in the p3 1100, and 140 gig on my beast, can i just share it? or because everyone will be using edonkey, will i have to as well?

Post 6

Thats cool dood,

I just want to try this and see how it goes.

If no good we revert back to Standard

Post 7

ok with edonkey i have this problem where it just crashes....it happened to me before then stopped, i got rid of it and it has been doing it for the past month now...

i fire it up...five seconds it crashes...this happened to anyone else?

i thought it might be a WinXP prob but i'm not really sure about that...

Post 8

yea i got the same problem, i downloaded the latest version and still got the same thing, so i didnt bother about it.
Does anyone know of a fix ? orhow to fix this

Post 9

Never had that problem.

I know that always happened to me in KazaA but not edonkey.

So at the moment I couldnt say. But lets check it out at DGA and get it rectified

Post 10

yeah i had the same prob with Kazaa too but no probs with edonkey
but i aint on XP i am ME

Post 11

I dont think it is OS related, what it is, I dont know..
I have Kazaa close on me within a few seconds of it openning, but edonkey runs fine..

OS - Win2K Pro.

Post 12

will winmx run on a lan?

Post 13

the version with cydoor crashed for me (edonkey) the version without, didn't. why you'd want the first version i don't know.

i may as well spill the beans, i have planned, and indeed have begun development of, a lan specific file sharing application that will double with a few other neat features as well, which i'll mention when i get them working.

don't expect to see this at the next dga, not even in pre-alpha form, but given a month or two, it should be fully functional, and worthwhile.

Post 14

I know why it's crashing, I had same problem but I fixed it, you people giving up too quickly, you are actually downloading the wrong version, you need to download the client version from the webpage that ends with .60 and it will work, thats the problem I had, and thats the fix!

Post 15

Just so it doesnt go unnoticed, that sounds really cool Paladin..

I would love to find out more about it when U have a chance.

Post 16

...hmm well i'll try that other download, get it checked, i also have the same problem with Kazaa, never had a prob with WinMX

and palading, i'm looking forward to seeing this in action :)

Post 17

sounds good paladin - nice little project for you. As a programmer I always find myself asking this question ... what language are you writing it in?

Post 18

A few. Starting in Java, simply because i'm more versed in java threads than any other language, i'm planning on writing it in c# also under windows, just as an experiment to see how it works, but eventually i'd like to polish it off in c++, because i'm not really happy with java's UI or execution speed yet.

Post 19

oh yay
can i help with the programming
i can probably do the bit that ads 4 and 7, just as long as the numbers stay as 4 and 7 ok :P

Post 20

yep currently programming in java (as we speak even) and have to agree with java being very good for threading and networking (ease of coding that is) but slightly slower in execution. Personally I have done very little c++ so don't know a thing about its threading etc. From memory I did write a simple file sharing program in uni not to the same specs you will be writing now but I might see if I can rustle it up as might have some stuff in there of use/interest to you? (doubt I will find it though as it was along time ago and a few house moves ago etc etc)

good luck with the project though and I look forward to hearing of your success :)

Post 21

Yeah, java has native threads, C/C++ doesn't, so becomes OS dependent. ugh. Got a better Java IDE than Forte? ;)

Post 22

Iam a bit confused. Whats the point of using edonkey? Why not just use the way it already is for file sharing, seems a lot less complicated. Also considering the problems some people have just running the program as is.

Post 23

because windows file sharing places a freaking huge load the machine being leeched from, the idea is to distribute the load, or lessen it as much as possible.

i am occasionaly completely unable to play games due to the number of connections to my machine, which i don't mind really, but yeah, thats the reason why.

Post 24

plus being able to search for the files thats good
also windows networking is crap i hate it takes forever to find anything :)

Post 25

for those of us that *actually* connected to it, it seemed to work well - though I did still get some inexplicable glitches - possibly due to the number of cycles something was taking up in the system

Post 26

well i "actually" connected to it :)

and 700 meg file was gonna take an hour, and that was when it was fast :P

Post 27

It all boils down to what settings you have your edonkey running on. I grabbed a few files and where as on the Net my best is between 30k-50k my best at the Lan was 5335k an average of about 3500k. So yep it worked okay then the old edonkey devil came in and it went to shit

Post 28

bleh, i guess i am spoilt by a powerful machine... leeching never bothers me.

win2k anyone?

Post 29

yeah, noone ever has trouble with sharing on win 2k
pfft :P

Post 30

peons don't suffer load because the brunt of it is borne by a select few.
