Guys, recently Octa4 was approached by an admin from Ultima Online asking us if we wanted to host a server for them. I need to know from as many of you as possible if:

a. you would consider making use of such a thing

and,

b. If in your honest opinion, it would be a popular addition

This is purely factfinding, which is why I didn't post it in the gamers servers section - if it does happen, likely it will either be very loosely afiliated, or have no link at all to this community - this is purely you lot helping me with some homework :D

yeh i'd play it, and would greatfully be an admin.
but the problem with free UO servers is... they get hacked, you gotta frig around with the map, and theres so many bugs where you can get the same weapon a few times.
i dont think we should personaly, origin have the best servers but you gotta pay.
if you dont pay. you play on free servers with lotza bugs.

Post 3

isnt that illegal?

Post 4

Well i personally havent played it but if its an rpg and i could either get a cracked version from an ftp or if i see it in a store and think it looks good id buy it.

Also related to crapy public servers, would there be a way to keep it free but also private (like the CS servers)?

Post 5

its not illegal.

Post 6

YES
i would play it

Not even vaguely interested. There is no other game than CS

Post 8

Mehehe Im sure old Swervey wouldnt agree with ya Ment..

Neither would I.. But UO is Sooooo old..

I think OCTA4 could host much more popular and current games than Ultima Online.

Dont U Meph ??

Post 9

but UO is different from most games gamers are into
its a game where u can do more thanjust kill people
u can get dragons to do it for u :P
but yeah would we still have to pay the "0US a months to play it?

yeah most free shards have a sing up page you have to go thouhg then they will appove your account but i guess it can be done the same way beening a 19 month vet and knowing alot about the bugs in the game it is really not that hard to mantain one from what i know proly hardest part is banning people for using bug and abusive people on the shard and in game surport is anthor big thing those are some things if you want to know more just ask me

Ok, to clear up some apparant missconceptions, as well as to more fully explain what happened:

I received a forwarded email from Octa4's operations manager, which was basically a submission for us hosting a linux UO server. The note from my boss asked me if it would be worth the company's time and effort. The box would be remotely maintained and admin'ed much as the CS servers are now. What I'm after is two things, firstly if *you* (the reader :P) would play if the server was available, and secondly, do you know of anyone(s) else that would like to play on a local server(at this point, numbers would interest me more than names).

I figure that anything else in the way of hosted gaming servers would be a good thing, more leverage for me to talk them into more servers in the future. What I need your help for, is that i don't know all *that* much about Ultima Online, and I haven't got the faintest idea if its popular enough to bother with.

Post 12

it's not really popular anymore, more popular games in that kind of genre would be something like Everquest....which is really good :)

no i wouldn't be interested in UO, frankly i didn't like the game, none of my friends like it either...

i could probably only name one person (that i know of) that would consider it...yet she is very stuck on everquest and anarchy online atm

Post 13

hell yeh, i know i would play it. A server hosted in darwin!

Yehs i know at least 3 other ppl who would play it.

SO what if its old, its still going strong!

Post 14

UO is _so_ 1990s.

Apart from that, do you really want to attract HUNDREDS of people to play on your UO server? i mean, an MMORPG is crap when only a few people play it. and i imagine, expensive to run when it's a good server.

Now, if you want to go ask lucasarts if you can host a Star Wars Galaxies server, go right the fuck ahead ;)

Post 15

yeha me and my mate (who plays now) will definetly be in on it
so thats 2

Post 16

I believe there are many other online games which Octa4 servers would better serve.

Post 17

yeah. like hearts. or something.

Post 18

Maybe retro gaming. Anyone in for a game of subspace?

Post 19

In the hundreds of ppl I know in the gaming fraternity, only 1 of em plays Ultima Online.

And she is in Canada.

Nuff said..

Edit : No and I know another lass in New York and she plays as well..

But thats it..

Post 20

UO just doesn't have the fanfare it did a few years ago...imho octa4 could put up some 'better'games...

Post 21

i played UO for 2 n 1/2 years...
Free servers chew up bandwidth for the host, and i mean chew up because you have macro'ers.
then you have all the people that jsut create an account, play for 1 day and leave the account.
Macroers also jsut stay on the server constantly, and so you have limited spots. people that cant get on get anouyed.
it would be good, but the game is old and outdated. personaly i think you if wanted to host a game that would get customers. Get a more later game, or pop game. UO has faded to everquest, and soon to come shadowbane

Make a MUD server :P I'm sure Wolfspirit has a few he's coded just waiting to be put up. I'd be in for that! ^_^

Post 23

I could finish up the Colonization/Space conquest web-game I was going to create with PHP. Not far into production yet but I could make it.

Although I somewhat seriously think people won't have an interest.

Post 24

stay tuned - I just got official authorization to create a survey to find out what O4 members as well as members of this fine community would like to see hosted at O4. If we can get a general concensus for a specific game or genre of games, I'll be making an official submission for server hosting with my superiors (as well as hardware donations for the machine to run it on :P)
