could you handle 56k? what about multi linked 56k?

the BM-server can be set up as gateway, and could also multilink phone lines if its needed.

I volunteer my optusnet account for the weekend (unlimited download),

IF this is to go ahead, (multilink)
all i need is another optusnet account for simplicity.
who else is on netrollover 255?
and have you got a serial modem?
all for simplicities sake that is, i know you can multilink different isps and stuff....

i got a 30 meter modem cable, and a modem to put on the server, if tn1/crew could arrange a phone line, or two.

what do ya reckon?

Sounds like a good idea.... specially w/ multilink that would allow for a bit more than just ICQ :) Would be good to setup a proxy too.. though I like Squid cause it works properly.. as in it actually caches properly.. unlike all the lhama style Wingate/Winroute's... SquidNT might be the go. I've used it a bit and while it did crap out eventually it should be fine for the period of time we're talking about. Unless you wanted to run IAS.. or whatever someone would have a copy. Unless you think a proxy would be totally unecessary but I think it would.... especially if you're going to have 80 ppl all trying to get down 56k or 112k at the same time :)

This assuming we used BM-Server? Someone might have a spare machine for a bit of smoothwall w/ transparent proxy which would solve some problems and iirc in the past smoothie was run for DHCP at DGA? Dunno how smoothwall deals with multilink though. I could possibly bring along my P200 and chuck smoothwall on if someone wants?

Anyway..

It is a plan .. all we had to do last LAN was get a connection for the office to hall, cant remember what went wrong with that!!!!!

Post 4

if we set up a proxy, all the machines connecting to it will have to be reconfigured for the proxy settings, and that is just a fuck around...
sure i can put proxy+ on it, or what else, but its still win2k at the moment, i need to learn nix ;)

i know a few will groan and whinge, but i think ICS on win2k here will do the job fine.
and that means that we can use DHCP, which saves even more trouble.
the server will be there early sat morn so no problems.
unless tn1 has objections to DHCP? or anything else.

BM-server will still be win2k at DGA15... ( not going to the 3-4-5 august one unless crusher takes it.)

unless anyone else has any ideas?

sounds good to me :)

We already have DHCP server running as a gateway with net access, Thanks to Cthulhu. only problem is the school had one phone line onto the school, and is avaiable to us after 13:00 on saturday, but the room gets locked after 14:00 and we dont have a key to unlock it come late sunday night. The next DGA #15 should have full internet, but thanks again Ruinwulf :)

Only problem with the new place, was the phoneline, everything else is Sweet 8)

Post 7

awww bleh..

FFS! ICQ? you should be playing CS dammit! hahaha

who wants to net....

Post 8

dhcp has been run at all the recent dga events.

good luck multilinking dialup accounts, exactly how many phone lines do you think you're going to have access to at the greek school? not to mention i doubt you'd get true multilinking, just some half assed load balancing thing that would basically just mean multiple 56k streams, not combined.

true, ics works fine, but can't beat a solid masqueraded connection where you can limit what people can access, and see who's abusing your link the most. firewalls rock.

Post 9

pwned lol

FFS paladin it was an idea, and it would have worked enough.

and hell multiple streams is till multilink dammit!

grrr

we arent adminning an OC1 line! lol

rainwulf if you setup a transparent proxy there isn't anything to setup.. assuming you're using DHCP it's all set and it all just works (magic)... and with Squid you can limit what files people access (like deny .zip, etc) and sizes, etc.. so they don't clog up the connection downloading animal porn. anyway.. I'll stop now... /me am Linux n00b..

Post 11

i prefer being a nazi, auditing traffic, and cutting off anyone who's abusive.

mind you caching is damn handy in that setup.

squid? seafood?
lol

Squid: a caching proxy server
Transparent Proxying: the act of forcing all traffic on specific ports through a proxy server, regardless of a browsers proxy setting. accomplished by inspecting packets as they pass through the firewall and redirecting packets with a matching destination port to the proxy server.
Seafood: a disgusting dish some people like to eat. ugh.

Post 14

paladin.. I like your humour :)

I'm a n00b rainwulf.. I can install linux and I know a bit..

For an example I will tell everyone that I don't know shit about cars.. Anyway one day I was telling my mate about some car and how it was turbo, etc.. and he didn't know what I was going on about. He said things like "What's a turbo?" and "Supercharger?".... so I explained to him what happens, pro's and con's, etc. and he was all like "Wow man.. see you know heaps about cars.. more than me" and I was like WTF? To me that was very basic knowledge that took 5 or 10 mins worth of reading time. So take that example and apply it to Linux and you can see what I mean :) Though I have had access to Linux since about 1994 or sometime. Still got some CD's... but I could never be bothered - what a mistake :)

Post 15

i havent be able to go to a DGA event yet and i am wondering why u people need internet there?

Post 16

Addicts...

Well I would say ICQ/MSN, etc.. also IRC (though that's a bit hard cause you'd get spanked for clones if you all piled onto the same server) and a bit of web browsing. If there was a small patch that people just really needed then you could get it... anything large might require someone to drive home and download over dsl.... web browsing for everyone at the same time wouldn't be any good simply because it would not cope with that number of people trying to squeeze their fat arses through little mr 49.2 or whatever it connected at. For an analogy think of what it was like accessing the net from school. Now do you want to feel like you're back at school again? :) But it would be bareable at least as long as people were considerate and I guess mostly used as an emergency... type thing.. but shit who knows...

Post 17

all i gots to say is, the linux HOWTOS are freaking BRILLIANT sources of information.

Post 18

whats a IRC?

is it possible to have icq or msn running over a LAN or dose it only run over internet?

Post 19

Internet Relay Chat

basically a chat service.

ICQ/MSN etc require internet connectivity to function, i dont think there are any third party servers for them, i understand where you're coming from tho, and am still hoping to have a lan (and dga) specific instant messenger service up and running by evo. we'll see. i've been busy lately :(

Post 22

is this in the same unit as the file sharing app???
need it need it :D

Post 23

yes. also intend to roll server-query like functions into it.

Post 24

oh yeah, you da man!!!

then you can sell it and come to hate pirates and we can all sit about and appreciate the irony (pronounced I-RONNY) :P

Ahh, the chaos factor of it all... I still can't believe some of Paladin's frickin' LS coding worked first time.....long nights spent going:
"I really don't think that will...hey..Wow!"
