hmm... basic concept is a standard (non DOV enabled) ISDN modem will get charged something like " per minute of connection to Telstra - DOV means that the connection is made using an analog signal, which fools the network into seeing the connection as a voice call, which is charged at $0.20 per call, ie. if you stay connected for a week, it costs you that for the entire call.

ISDN Voice Calls are untimed.
ISDN Data Calls are timed.
DOV = Data Over Voice, ie, establishing the ISDN Call as a Voice call (untimed), and then pushing data across it anyway, hence circumventing the per minute data charges, until telstra says 'fuck j00' and times voice calls as well.

These guys are the kings of DOV.

This is the place you buy the special DOV modems (or OD if he still has them)
The gear telstra supply apparently only does 56k / 112k and no DOV by itself.
For home you should be looking @ Onramp Home Highway and 18c's local untimed calls (local = within 25kms)
For about $35-40 month rental you get 2 x 64k channels (digital lines all the way to your house). You can make ordinary voice calls @ same rate as a normal line. Data calls are very expensive, so thats where this DOV comes in. The DOV call starts out as a "voice call", then both ends agree to swap to "data" straight after, thus fooling the telstra billing system.
From memory its setup cost is "80 to convert an existing telephone line to ORHH or over $300 for a new line all together.
