I've noticed that quite a few people need help learning to play counter-strike, so, in the strive to find more challenging players for myself while I'm online I decided to put down quite alot of useful tips on how to play counter-strike, think your 1337 or above this, then dont read it, if you have any tips that might be useful, feel free to post them or comment in general below

Have a low sensitivity, I used to have a high setting (of 10) and DID have until 4 days ago when I dropped it down to 2.5, I noticed a lot of improvement of long range shooting and just my accuracy in general. To find out your sensitivity in the console type
sensitivity
If you have an optical mouse that has a high refresh rate (most do) then there is no need for the mouse filter so make sure you set it to m_filter 0 as the filter decreases your accuracy for those snap head shots
There is also a way to change your sensitivity when zoomed although I cannot remember command as I do not change this from default

Run with the knife, no matter how many times I see some people running around (from spawn) with their primary weapon out shits me to tears, YOU RUN FASTER WITH THE KNIFE!!! Yes it's true, you do, you run faster then while holding anything else, and the name of the game is SPEED as it's very useful for storming or getting to a primary position ahead of the other team and in clan wars, can mean the difference between winning or losing.

Use quick change, I use the keys wasd as my movement keys because then I have the whole keyboard to fiddle with and believe me, I used at LEAST half the keys when I play CS. I have bound q (bind q lastinv) as my quickchange key, what this does, is swap IMMEDIATELY (no delay in changing weapons) to the LAST thing you had in your hand, whether it be the c4, hegren, pistol, knife or anything, it will just swap between the last two things you had in your hand. A useful example of this is the following
Whenever I move on the map I normally have my knife in my hand, if I suspect there is enemy nearby I swap to my primary weapon, then IMMEDIATELY to my pistol, thus, if an enemy comes out I hit quickchange to my primary weapon, shoot at the enemy, if they aint dead, hit quick change again and shoot with my pistol.

Lately I started leaving at least 2 rounds in a magazine. If i have an enemy in my sights I will shoot with primary weapon until I have about 2-4 rounds left in magazine, then i'll swap to the pistol, and continue to shoot them, whether I kill them or not matters nothing, it is always good to have a backup, and if they think i'm out of rounds and come in for the knife, well I quickchange back to primary weapon and take them out with my last few remaining rounds OR when I'm being attacked and another enemy jumps onto the scene at a distance, I have a better chance at taking them out as well then with a pistol

Shoot through things, you'd be surprised how many different things you can shoot through, I dont know if you've seen me do it or not, but at bomb site B on de_dust2 there is a wall you can shoot through to cap the terrorists coming in from their spawn, I've killed so many people doing it and have been called cheat many times because of it, no I do not see it as a cheat OR an exploit, merely a soft wall that I can shoot through so I do. Walls are not the only thing either, if you see an enemy run for cover behind a box/crate/pillar to reload, then shoot through it at where they MIGHT be, if you think they are in the middle behind the object, shoot in the middle of the object, if you hit them, you'll still damage them and i'm sure they are gonna be pretty freaked out and you might even kill them.

Lead people into your line of fire, dont aim right at the person and shoot, if you and/or the other person is moving, aim off. In the military we have to sight our weapons because everybody's eyes are different and you need to ZERO a weapon according to that persons eye, if you use a weapon that is not ZERO'd then while shooting you need to aim off, that is aim off the target a little so the bullet will hit it's mark, well this is almost the same thing. If your standing still and the enemy is strafing from left to right, simply put the crosshair to the right of him, and wait for them to move into it, then, you wont have to move the mouse wrecking you aim, and you'll have a much better chance of hitting them. If your moving as well, then the same principle applies and you should notice a lot better accuracy or at least you'll be hurting them alot more.

Dont under-estimate the pistol, the pistol is a very powerful weapon, I've seen "1337" players play on a map, with the top score using nothing but pistols, in particular, the desert eagle, a highly accurate, highly powerful (50 calibre, same as the AWP) pistol that is most useful, if you suspect an enemy around the corner, then rip out your desert eagle, and JUMP (yes jump) around the corner shooting at where the enemy MOST LIKELY will be. The pistol is also accurate while strafing/jumping so a much better choice then any other weapon.

HE GRENS, dont spam them people, it's not a fuck fight trying to see who can spam the other team as best as they can, it's a war were fighting, and we plan to win. Dont just throw them willy nilly at the start of the round at where the enemy rush the most, thats ridiculous, because a. they probably know your going to do it, and b. they are probably gonna do the same and get you. Hold onto them, dont waste them at the start like every other n00b on the server, wait until theres been a few fire fights and their HP are reduced, then give em a hurl. A few points to note with HE GRENS are, they are not shrapnel grenades, the HE stands for HIGH EXPLOSIVE, meaning they burn you, and because of the heat factor, THEY GO THROUGH WALLS! If you know some bastard is on the other side of the wall in say assault, then hurl it at the floor so it will bounce towards the wall and explode there, you might kill them in doing so. Ways to avoid them, well unless your superman and can run at the speed of light, your gonna get hurt, but not always as bad as you might think. The initial reaction for the majority of people that see HE grens coming towards them, is to back pedal as fast as you can. DONT! This is the dumbest thing yuo can do, if a grenades running at you, why run with it??? Exactly, it's stupid, so next time you see a grenade coming your way, run at it and try to get past, unless of cuorse it's already bounced, then back off, otherwise, if you do get past it, you should reduce your damage a fair bit, and also have a chance at getting the prick that threw it and is still getting their weapon out.

Bomb plantings, if your a ct and are approaching an already planted bomb, be cautious, more then likely it's a trap. Dont just run up and defuse the bomb first do a quick check of the area, then, approach the bomb, hit your use (defuse) key, then stop, and back off a bit and look around, if an enemy heard you then they are more then likely gonna think your an easy target and try to pick you off, but if your ready for tehm, you stand a much better chance then with your head down defusing a bomb, if all else fails, just leave the bomb, stay alive and keep your weaponry, there is no need to be ridiculous, at least come out on top even if your team does not win the round, at least you did not die needlessly.

Hostages, these little babies can win the round, respect the hostage and he'll respect you, ok I'm joking. One trick myself and bluemania did as terrorists, is we used to shoot the hostages until their health was below 10. Then we would make the hostages follow us (you cant do that any more) and we would just attack the ct's normally, and more then likely, the ct's would cap the hostages, even a careless grenade (remember that) would take them all out much to our amusement and the cries of anguish from the unlucky butcher. Do try to get the hostages, they give your team alot of money, and help you win the round.
As I remember more tip/tricks, i'll post them, feel free to comment or post tips/tricks of your own as i'm sure we all know some little thing that might seem like nothing, but it may help one of us

Shooting, alot of people die because of the way they shoot, with weaopns such as the MP5 it does not matter AS MUCH, it still does matter though. I mainly use the ak, colt, deagle, and the usp. With the ak and the colt they are nearly identical in shooting. All I do is continually fire single shots unless I see a big group of targets. The Ak loses accuracy after 3-4 rounds so the longer you shoot the less accurate you'll be. If I see an enemy, i'll crouch, aim, and keep tapping my mouse at the rate of about 4 times per second, I dont shoot off nearly as many bullets as most people, your accuracy is alot better, and I still kill (RAPE) a lot of people so obviously, I must be doing SOMETHING right
