the matrix... cause it was an awsome cinema experience and the idea was somthing similar to a warped idea about the world i had as a kid
star wars series... cause i had seen the first movie 5 times by the time i was 6 my dad used to sneak me to the drive in while mum was workin nightsift as a nurse (thats the old nightcliff drive in for those old enough to remember)
once were warriors... one night a friend and i went into dcc to see pulp fiction but got there half hour later than movie started. this movie was playing so we were not gonna waste a trip ... we were both speechless at the end of it. what a powerful movie....nuff said
pulp fiction.... cant say what it is about his movie its just great
the Jay and Silent Bob series(clerks, mallrats, chasing amy, dogma, Jay n Silent Bob strike back).... damn kevin snith is funny and he knows talent (or they wouldnt be in his movies or any others for that matter)

Once Were Warriors is a great movie drama..and the Actor who played the Eldest Son of Jake The Muss played Apoc in The Matrix
And i think The Matrix has the best non DTS Encoding Compression Audio Transfer to DVD..great show off to your home theatre reciever.better than some DTS and EX tranfers out there for Region 1

Hmmmm...yes im not completely certain, i'll check it out when i get home, but someone really screwed up these films, who ever did the timothy dalton films did a really bad job.... there wasnt even a Q in the movies, i think or was it M. Hmmmm...i'll have to watch them tonight, and do some research.

I made sure sly got a copy of this when we exchanged a few moofies and I think he will also back us up in the claiming it is a wicked show. (especially if you ever wanted to see Willem Dafoe [not sure on first name spelling] play a gay fbi agent.....and if you didn't then you should want to :P)

By the by dont include any Jackie Chan ones in that list, because they are a completely different kettle of fish.
Then i would ask you (if you have actually seen any) how many of these Hong Kong movies that you have seen, have stared Chow Yu Fat as the lead?
Heh for Chowie in CTHD he's actually put quite a bit more effort into acting to his usual. 'Shoot everything now, get shot in every limb, bleed more blood than any human could possibly have, turn wallhack on and win the day' mode of movies. Well bit of an exaggeration but the asians and HK movie freaks would understand.

That doesn't always mean anything - I've seen some twisted movies win Academy Awards in my time - box office takings are a much better indication of the popularity of a movie if you ask me.

why did life is beautiful win?!... because foregin movies hadnt ever won, so they decided that any old flick would do. its a stupid movie and should have been a 'straight to video' for the plain ness of the story.

Ok then fine if you place no faith in the acadmey awards then lets look at the facts.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was released in hong kong and a few selectted china town (around the world) cinemas.
Why? well the big movie studios didnt want to pick it up cause they was afraid that the greater viewing puplic would be unable to get there small puny minds around the subtitles and amazing effects.
They said that the american public would not be interested in such a long movie with seemingly impossible stunts.
This in itselfs is a bloody joke, when you look at the money racked in by Mission Impossible 2 and the Matrix. but thats another story for another post.
Anyways after the initial release, the movie was a massive success. The hong kong studio then went back again to the big guys and said look at our figures. Can you please help us release this movie to a bigger audience. They said no agian. So they left it running in the same therates etc. By now a month has passed and word has spread through the net and word of mouth about this amazing movie.
anyways long story short,eventually the movie was picked up by tristar and they eventually released it (tenatively) to the wider audience.
It opened at #1 in the US that weekend for takings.
So if you people only go by the # of millions it raked in then fine. I dont know the exact $ but it did extremely well in the USA.
Its harder to measure in Australia as we had already had it for a month at various china town cinemas and they are not included in takings ratings.

Or is it because you fail to grasp the concept that those movies are made mostly overseas, yes thats another country and thus a foreign movie.
Sure Jackie is more widely accpetted nowadays, as is Chow Yun Fatt as well. Sure some of Jackies new movies are done by hollywood (ie rush hour 2). But you will find that they are not of the same calibur as his Golden Harvest (his Hong Kong studio) or same level of martial arts skills.
Also you will note that both of these actors have been making successful movies in Hong Kong for in excess of 20 years,before hollywood. By the by this dose not make them bad actors or directors. Just makes hollywood look bad. :)
Nah I was just saying that because it's how I feel. I've grown up with them since I was young, among the first movies I would watch as a child and as far back as I remember I'd watch them in movies even if I didn't know who they were yet. Only to figure out that who they really were a couple years later when I"d watch the movie again and remember.
Since I've grown up on their movies as such, to me it just always feels weird to consider their movies as foreign. I guess in a way yeah I do fail to grasp they're made overseas :D because it feels like their movies are from right at home.
Heck I even know heaps of gossip about those actors of type of gossip you'd only hear about Hollywood stars :lol:
One thing I have to admit on failure, as much as my parents, family, and friends have desperately tried to force Cantonese or Mandarin into my head I still haven't learnt. :oops:
Oh and some of Jackie's chinese songs rule!
Though I will say I'm more of a Jet fan though, tended to see his movies more often than others.
always been a Jackie fan over Jet... but he is changing my mind more recently :)
anyway, i too grew up with jackie, bruce, jet and many others (mainly the hong kong and japanese movies) and i'm as aussie as you can get :P
i spose i would consider european movies as foreign but because i've been watching asian movies for 13+ years...well you get the pic.
wish i knew Mandarin and Canton...:'( still trying to pick up all the facets of the Japanese language (which i've been learning for the past 4 years) :|

My absolute favourite movie is Crouchiing Tiger Hidden Dragon. I have a few other favourite movies, basically your Matrix and stuff like that.
Same as Seqo, i prefer Jackie over Jet Li, Jackie's old stuff (the Cantonese Chinese movies) i find is much better then the new stuff, Jet Li had one awesome early movie, but ive forgotten the name, Kiss of the Dragon was awesome, "The One" made me cry, because it so was pathetic.
But ill be happy to say, Bruce Lee owns them all - the only man who was as fast in the movies as in real life, and who didnt need to use ropes.

Yup, this is a great example - its a vote of popularity from the general public, not by a small group of cuban cigar smoking industry hacks.
I've never gotten to see the movie, but as an anime fan I have no problem with subtitles - I'm not knocking the movie dude, only the Academy Awards people :P
meph - if you ever get around to hiring out the movie or whatever. no matter what happens do not torment yourself to the evil ways of the dubbing. which seems to be the only way they release the VHS in darwin...it quite plainly sucks.
never really liked CTHD, it was ok-ish but never really got to me like some movies....
bruce lee was cool to begin with and his movies were good....however i think he was a pretty pompous arse :P i mean seriously, one punch finished off everybody :P (slight exaggeration but he had so many ppl trying to kill him and i swear in some places he wouldn't even touch them and they died...funny to watch though :P)
i would just like to say thankyou to whoever had the Jet Li movies at Evo #2, i've been watching them recently and they are pretty damn good :)

Im the same way Jay, i dont consdier them foreign, but the greater audience does. I grew up with them as well, well perhaps not grow up with them, as we didnt have TV till i was like pretty much grown up.
But thats some of my 1st video expereicnes Jackie Chan and Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer movies. Good clean fun movies, with ace fight scenes. :)
As for the best martial arts actors. Easy as Bruce Lee (man he would rock if he was still with us), Jackie Chan (watch druken master 2), then Jet Lee, then cant think of dudes name akido dude with pony tail, was married to grifiths chick (beat her up as well i think) sure he has few slight issues, but as a martial artist hes ace good, then fianlly old chucky. Sure hes old, but he went toe to toe with Bruce, so he has the moves and would most likely bust all our butts with out much effort.
Always thought Jackie Chan-Mr. Nice Guy ( Jackie ) was a Australian&Hong Kong Production. orig done in English and then dubbed with subtitles for Asia Markets..
good seeing director Sammo Hung doing a cameo..did not actually see it until i brought it on DVD fews days ago
think City Hunter is up there a classic in it's own right...seeing him playing SF2 Chun Li was funny..and was made in that time to 93-94 which made it better
