I happen to disagree with all of you. One thing you're all forgetting, in all of this, is that there were actual people in those towers. Not statistics, not nameless clones, people. Those people had lived, on average, a total of thirty years; thirty years of experience, thirty years of life, times three thousand, all extinguished.
That said, the Sept. 11th attacks on America were NOT the biggest tragedy of the century. 80% (Eighty percent) of Kenyans have AIDs and will be dead in ten years; more people die *every day* of hunger and dehydration then died in the towers. Yet, these things are barely known, and talked about even less. But it's the very concept of the attacks which astounds; there was no military or strategic value in attacking the two towers with aircraft, and precious little in attacking the Pentagon. America doesn't run a centralized military; even the complete annihilation of the Pentagon would not have disrupted their military powers in the slightest. No, the attacks were not done for any military reason; the reasons were entirely psychological. However, history is not on the terrorists side.
I have not found, anywhere, record of any attack of any description against civilians doing anything except killing a few people and wasting bombs. Take World War II, the Battle of Brittan; Adolf Galand made the decision to cease bombing Brittan's airfields and RADAR stations and focus on her cities, and while the cities did indeed burn, Britian was angrily united as one against the Germans. In addition, the time gave Britian a chance to rebuild RADAR stations and get their planes flying again; the Germans only had one more chance to equalize the war, and they blew that one, too (Use of the ME262 fighter craft would have, in my humble opinion, completely reversed the tide of the war and bought the allies to their knees; however Adolf Hilter insisted the aircraft be his 'Blitz bomber', and in the time it took to convert the aircraft to a bomber <which could only carry a single bomb>, the plants and factories which produced the craft were overrun by the allies).
The attacks on the Twin Towers had hoped to, as President Bush put it, "Scare us(Americans) into chaos and retreat." As he also said, "They have failed." America has united in such a way that has never been seen since the War of Inderpendance. One of my good American friends was talking to me a month or two back, when America was still bombing Afghanistan; she said that, as a pacifist, she felt sick every time she watched the tapes of the bombings and missile attacks against Afghanistan. But, at the same time, she lives in New York; she said every day she goes to work, she can see the vacant place where the Trade Towers existed, and suddenly, she doesn't feel so sick any more.
But there is a flip side to all of this, of course, as there is with anything.
I also had a long talk, two nights ago, with a close friend of my mothers. We didn't mention Sept 11th, but we DID talk about the middle east, Israel, and the concept of Palastine. Two weeks ago, her friend and an aquaintance of mine, a local judge in fact, was in the middle east; she was standing in the sun, and it was hot. So, she went to move over into the shade; apparently, this simple action was enough to cause the local Israelie soldier to point his loaded M16 assault rifle at her and motion for her to move back into the sun. Needless to say, she complied. Also, that day, she saw a dead body in the street, riddled with bullets. Naturally horrified, she made inquiries into the man's death, and why no-one had movied the body, even though it had clearly been there for at least a day. She learnt through her inquiries that, just the day before, the boy who was infact no more then 15 years of age, was taken from his house by the Israelie soldiers, and machinegunned in the middle of the street. Why? His *brother* was *suspected* of being a spy.
Now, with those two incidents clearly in your mind, one must imagine how those in the middle east feel. Israel is a state which was created after World War II as a place for displaced Jews to live, and it recieved (and still today receives) large payouts from the American and British governments. The M16 that the soldier I spoke of earlier was wielding was paid for in American dollars. Why all the interest, you ask? Why does the United States back Israel so strongly? The answer is simple; oil. That's all it is. Middle East has it in huge amounts, America doesn't. A single American consumes more oil then three hundred and seventy Etheopians; they comprise 5% of the world's population, but consume 25% of it's energy. 99% of the energy supply for road transport in OECD countries is sourced from crude oil. They need the crude oil that comes from the middle east and Africa; the only way they can get it, is to ensure stable allies in the area, by literally moving people there over the top of existing people, call it a country, then giving the inhabitants of the new country enough money and weapons to enforce the existance of the new country.
Imagine how the 'Palastinian' people must see the United States? As strong supporters of Israel, strong support of these barbaric acts, strong support of the soldiers who preform them. I understand completely where the anger towards the United States in that part of the world comes from. It's not 'The Religion of Islam vs the United States', it's most of the middle east vs the United States. Funnily enough, the predominant religion there is Islam, and therefore most people assume that it is that is the Islamics alone who preform such acts; such assumptions are simply incorrect.
I am sick of something, however. I am sick of those who comment on the 'media frenzy' surrounding the events of Sept. 11th, I am sick of those who are looking only at the negative aspects of media coverage and ignoring the positive. The Sept. 11th special on Channel Eight was shown completely *without* advertisments; a very big thing for a commercial television station. This pleased me greatly, just as it pleased me that Saving Private Ryan was shown on Anzac day, again, on Channel Eight, and again, advertisment free. These are important issues, and they need to be known.
So, in conclusion, I am not sick of hearing about September 11th, because judging from the content of this thread and of others on other boards around the internet, a lot of people don't know why it happened and need to learn.
