This article gives a very disturbing view of ms and what they plan to do

Yeah, I know, I f*cking know.

Has there been a petition organised or do we need to organise one.

Post 3

There will be options to disable such things in the new AMD systems, and there is always ways around MS operating systems, it just takes time.

Post 4

Odyssey, they have a vested interest in making this technology work.

They screw everything else up because they aren't bothered. They can and will do something well if it will actually help them.

Post 5

Somehow, Bill Gates is starting to remind me more and more of The Brain.

"What are we going to do tonight, Brain?"
"The same thing we do every night, Pinky: Try to DRM the world!"

Aravi, hackers (and the general gamers market) have a vast interest in making this technology not work  .
AMD said you can disable it anyway so why do we really care? The Pentium3 had something similar (spyware), but the public didn't accept it so Intel were forced to provide an option to disable it, as AMD will.

As for OSes it's called Linux or Lindows ppl.

When this palladium or whatever comes out (years away) everyone will move elseware. Have you noticed that quite a few new games on hybird Mac/Windows CDs can run perfectly fine on Linux?
BTW that AMD and MacOS thing may still happen.

Post 7

Yeah,
Have you heard of that dirty scheme where M$ gave away nearly a BILLION dollars to charity..shit ehh, what a scam.

And when he pumped 250 Mil into Apple in '95 to keep them afloat.
How evil....

When they wanted to throw 200 Mil at IT in Oz to sponsor a college and better training to compete with the programmers coming out of India.
Alston said No..:(

Lucky Linus has done so much to help the general computing industry to balance it out... *heavy sarcasm* :)

Post 8

Linux is still the underdog.

If it gained more power Windows would be screwed, it is only the perceived lack of Linux apps that lets it survive.

HA!

Microsoft didn't "give away" money to charity. They announced their intention to provide a billion dollars worth of hardware and Microsoft software to disadvantaged US schools as part of an out-of-court settlement to get the class action lodged against them for monopolistic practices off their back.

Does it strike you as strange that as part of a punishment for trying to perpetuate a monopoly, they offered to give out MORE of their software to schools, to push people to use their stuff even MORE? Oh yeah, and they valued THEIR OWN PRODUCT for the "giveaway" at full retail value - you can't tell me it costs them $700 or whatever to stamp a copy of MS Office Professional.

So they wouldn't have put themselves out a billion dollars anyway. And then Red Hat came forwards (in a stunning display of calling-your-bluff trickery) and offered to provide their OS and support free of charge to those schools as an alternative to MS (who would still be bound to provide a billion dollars worth of hardware anyway :P ).

Can't comment on the Apple thing. Probably a fee given in exchange for ownership rights to some Apple technology, though.

While we're talking about that grant given to that college recently. Know why they did that? That college was "asked" to introduce Microsoft's C# language as a core programming subject in their curriculum, replacing Java. Nice guys my ass - that money was a bribe to try and push .NET onto our future software developers.

Microsoft is a corporation. They don't do ANYTHING to be nice. They only EVER do ANYTHING for profit - whether it's tangible or non-tangible. It's not bloody nice, but it's good business.

Addendum: Bill Gates himself (NOT his corporation, HIM) did recently make a fairly significant contribution to charity from his own money. For this, I congratulate him.

Heres the solution, by the fastest processor that doesnt support Palladium and stay with it until the manufacturers realise it cant continue. Hell i would be happy with and XP 2600 for the next 5-10 years. Especially while only running win2k and Linux.

Microsoft plans to implement Palladium DRM (digital rights management) in a hardware chip, initially implanted on the mobo, but later on embedded in the CPU, and employing hardwired encryption throughout. The purpose of this is to flag every file on the computer with a digital signature telling a remote server what it is. If it's an unauthorised file, the remote server will tell your computer not to let you execute it. This is basically an attempt to stop the trading of mp3's and/or warez

Nooooooooooooo, what am I to do about MP3's?

F__KING MICROSOFT, I'M GETTING LINUX!!

Post 12

Darkie,

The American IT schools initiative was different.
MS handed over a whipping big BILLION dollar check and THEN Bill himself gives away more money a year then this whole board combines will ever earn :)

Look it is ALL self interest...no doubts, all companies do it, hence why they are in BUSINESS for....

So what if he wanted Oz to help with the .NET implementation.
It would have created hundreds of jobs of which several ppl here would probably have gone to or studied these courses.

Guess what ...No jobs..No money...Oz falls further behind the world again.

I 'm not ANTI-nix, Just anti-FUD and there's plenty coming from both sides :)

Actually, he hadn't donated a cent until someone brought up that, with all that money, he has kept it all to himself. Gatesy then started shovelling heaps of money into charity.

Benign act of goodwill my arse, more like PR salvaging.

Doesn't matter. He still did it. You don't see any of these filthy-rich oil sheiks giving any money to charities (that we know of).

I'm not saying he gave until it hurt and he's some kind of martyr - to him, the donations he gave are pocket change, but to the charities he gave it to it's very significant.

Another reason why you Windows users don't bash *nix is you don't have any good points to bring up. You stick to Windows because you're too complacent to do otherwise.

Whereas we decided we didn't like MS or Bill Gates and have chosen an alternative.

No Aravi,

We just don't CARE enough about our operating systems.

Im keeping it.

I *COULD* sit here and start a ANOTHER flame war between nix and dows but what's the point?

I've made all my points in the last 3 of these type posts.
Unix and Linux have MANY problems, if 90% of the worlds PC poulation was using it there would be MANY more found.

It comes down to personal choice...

I've used Unix, Linux, REdhat, Debian, Smoothwall?? and a few other distros over the last 10 years. I'm not anti linux but don't think it's all that great.

DOS ROCKED>>>>>>WOOT!! :)

And what's this 'WE' stuff Aravi? *looks around*

Imagine if ALL the windows users ganged up and continually heaped crap on nix the way ppl like Aravi do to M$.

Would be a very funny and very short netwar for sure :)

With what ammo, you have
* More games

We have
* Stability
* Real power
* Real control over our machines
* Not helping a monopoly gain power
* More efficient OS

And your "more games" argument falls over where Wine/WineX are considered and given the trend towards Linux ports for games.

There is precious little you have.

Post 24

Quote from Aravi:
You stick to Windows because you're too complacent to do otherwise.

Yes true, if this is how you define complacency:
NOT having to fuck around with your OS most of the time just to get it working. And then some more.
NOT having to read through innumerable reade's, howto's etc.
NOT having to wait until someone decides to code for that new device you just bought.
Fuck it, the list could go and on and on.

I installed win-doze for one purpose - gaming. I have a pc for one purpose - gaming. (Client gaming, not serving obviously.) Windows lets me do this in about 1\10th of the time and will support practically everything i buy of the shelf without patching coding etc.

In this instance i define complacency as intelligence. What can Linux offer that is half as 'simple' for us complacent bastards?

Post 25

ROFL this is getting funny :)

Blue screen...hmm I dont see those...

98' Box stable since 99, 3 years since a rebuild, never crashes.

Win2K box at work, been running with about 6 reboots a year for the last 18 months, never had a blue screen.

If this is ALL you can pick on Aravi your in trouble bud.

I use standard Hardware and I don't overclock...hence why I get no blue screens, the way you SETUP your PC determines the amount of memory errors/CPU cycle errors.

I wouldn't be bringing either Sly or Paladin into this either.

They are BOTH well aware of the shortcomings as well as strengths of a nix based system.

I don't see any support from them, in fact Paladin and I have had this argument MANY times over the years and we both agree to disagree.

The thing they can do, that you seem not to be able to is to see the 'other' side of the argument.

I think it's great that more ppl are experimenting with Linux.
However die hards like you are the reason more ppl are turning AWAY from Linux.

Ever tried to get help on a linux question on a linux forum?

Might as well post a "Why was a banned post" the responses are identical.

Honestly if you CAN'T see the benefits of either than you shouldn't be talking about it. How can you argue when you don't have knowledge of both sides?

Your just being blind there.

Your Quote?
* Real power
* Real control over our machines

Bwahahaha THAT IS SUCH rubbish.

You have a command line interface that has direct control over the hardware IF you want it.

Dos on roids really, Windows did away with that for a reason, although i'm sure you havent put much thought into that.

In fact you havent put much thought into anything here.
It's just the same garbage that we've all heard for the last 12 years now.
Your just regurgutating it.

Sit down and have a REAL hard think about WHY MS have gone the way they have, think about society, think about the average PC user's knowledge and why most ppl havent bothered to become 'experts' in PC's
like many people do when they grow up with them.

If you can post some new, interesting or original ideas or rebuttals go ahead and i'll reply.

But i'm not going to waste my time with a person that can't or won't listen to anothers point of view. :)
Might as well argue with a wall , even tho it has a penguin on it :)

*grin* Aravi - no bluescreens on this workstation or my two home machines since I bought my first computer 5 years ago with win98SE on it :P

I may disagree with Bill Gates's business policies, but I can't find too much to fault the O/S in general.

In fact, just to throw in a spanner - our linux servers here at O4 crash more often than many of the workstations (what can I say, some of my co-workers are truly inept :P)

Stability of a machine running *ANY* O/S is due solely to proper maintenance of the computer. Also if you run the machine outside the specified settings for the hardware, you get whatever comes - and no sympathy from me :P

I'll happily bag out Bill, but O/S bashing is about as lame as the whole AMD vs Intel or 3dFX vs Nvidia vs Raedon arguments.

Been running WinXP for almost 2 years now, both at work and at home - not one single blue screen - most program errors don't do more than crash themselves.

I say again - blue screens are a sign of an improperly maintained computer, not the Operating System.

Post 41

Running Win2k - updated drivers and SP2 (mind you a legit version too) I rarely if ever get the blue screen. I got the blue screen most often when I first tried using the GA Perfomance utility, only to find out it was an overclock utility which on an unlocked XP caused wonderous blue screens.

Oh yeah I used to get the blue screen very often with my Audigy eX but some updated drivers fixed those up fairly quickly.

Windows does not give you any true power, you can click a few buttons, but can you assemble the entire OS from scratch piece-by-piece in a configuration of your choosing?

Bah, I think not.

And efficiency, it kicks the sh*t out of Windows here.

Total Annihilation, running on a 233MHz K6

Windows 98:
Barely playable framerate at 640x480

Linux + Wine
Silken framerate at 1024x768.

You'll probably find that the framerate and playability was also due to this particular problem.

All I'm trying to say dude, is different people like different things - and thank f$@k only people who know what theyre doing try to use *nix - else I'd be a raving psychopath with large implements of distruction.... ohh... hang on... never mind :P forget I said anything after the *nix part :P

Post 45

Just think of an OS as a tool for the right job.

You can use Windows as workstation, just as you could use a flavour of Linux or any other OS for a workstation. They both have pros and cons, flaws and differ in usablity. It's usually the problem is on your end or the other software used.

However once DRM comes out, everything is going to be a whole new ballpark.

Post 46

I wish to keep my right to choose.

Understand what makes em tick softwarewise and hardwarewise. While most of the ppl who use windows do it cause they get it with there comps and there either too stupid or too lazy(me) to use linux. I also note that in the majority all the people who use linux seem to like it and stick with it. It might be noted that everyone of these ppl previously used windows and did not like and so did not stick with it.

that windows was performing poorly because the hardware was faulty.

The only reason Linux was running smoothly on it is because it wasn't using the same amount of resources.

Do me a favour Aravi and don't try to make it look like I'm bashing Linux cause I'm not. I'm bashing O/S bashers. Both systems have their uses, as does the Mac O/S. Close minded elitists of any variety frankly bore me - 99.9% of the time theyre so puffed up with their own self importance and wrapped up in their "mine is better than yours" mentality that they start getting very repedetive.

You say that Windows is a very crappy system, but then if it was as unstable as you like to point out, I seriously doubt Microsoft would be as powerful as they are today, even with giving away the system with nearly every new computer sold today. A properly maintained computer with good working hardware running virtually any operating system will not crash. Problems only arise when people don't maintain their computers, tinker or do otherwise inadvisable things to either hardware or software.

Post 51

I have not read all the reply’s to this post as I was to impatient to post my own views on the matter. So if anything has been repeated, Sorry and if I’m wrong about anything say so..

I don’t think I have much to say besides a long stream of abuse directed at Microsoft.
And controlling the internet would be very profitable, but I strongly disagree with all this DRM Bull S***t, I don’t know if the US government will take off on the idea, If Microsoft will be able to view files with DRM and control them, then governments around the would wont Jump to the idea to well. And if all this happens I don’t think web sites/server/ISP’s will update there OS and hardware to this controlled environment M$ is offering.

If most of the consumers (Us) have computer systems and software that does not have the DRM file system of the new Longhorn/Palladium technology then the market probably wont update their systems, other wise they would be blocking the consumers out (Us) and would loose Billions of dollars.

I checked out the dictionary and thesaurus on Palladium and Longhorn and came up with the following..

Palladium found in 1 item.
Safety
Excerpt: "..., sniffing valve; safeguard, palladium. guardianship, wardship..."

long•horn Pronunciation Key (lông hôrn , l ng -)
n.
1. Any of a breed of cattle with long horns, formerly bred in great numbers in the southwest United States.

2. A variety of Cheddar cheese molded into a long cylinder.
\Long"horn`\, n. (Zo["o]l.) A long-horned animal, as a cow, goat, or beetle. See Long-horned.

Now for my own theory:
Microsoft are sniffing the valve of a long-horned animal in preparation for the safeguard of their guardianship full of cheddar cheese molded into a long dildo type cylinder for self insertion into anal cavity.
Your views????

And about the Linux V Windows debate that’s just taken place.
Most windows users don’t like linux for the fact that they don’t know how to use it, I for one would not be using Windows XP Corp if I knew how to do everything that I do in windows with linux, I think that the setting up of linux is what really puts most people of, it can be annoying and time consuming.
That’s just my opinion though..

#46 Pd
Palladium

Discovered in: 1803

Discovered by: William Hyde Wollaston of England

Description: Named after the asteroid Pallas (which was discovered about the same time), palladium is a lustrous silvery-white metal. It is malleable, ductile and unreactive in the presence of air and water, but does react with acids and alkalis. Palladium is unusual in that hydrogen gas can filter through hot palladium. This quality allows palladium to purify hydrogen gas. At room temperature, palladium can absorb up to 900 times its own volume of hydrogen. It serves as a catalyst, and catalytic converters in automobile exhaust systems account for much of its use. It also is used in surgical instruments, watch-making and electrical contacts. Due to the fact it will not tarnish in air or water, it often is used in dental work, usually alloyed with gold or silver. White gold, often used in jewelry, is an alloy of gold and palladium.

Biological Rating: No known benefit for life processes.

Biological Benefits: Palladium has no known biological use.

Percentage Amount in the Human Body: 0 %

Obtained from: Palladium is generally found only in pure form, and along with platinum is found in sulfide concentrations in mafic igneous rocks It is mined in Russia, the USA(Montana), Zimbabwe, Australia, Canada and Finland.

I have both WinXP and linux (Mandrake, though thinking of swapping over to slackware). And i can say to all Windows users that if the reason u havent tried linux is beacuse ur lazy to learn, dont be. These days linux (mainly Redhat and Mandrake) are as simple to use as windows. When i first installed Mandrake i thought to myself, this aint linux, its a bloody windows clone. And with only years of windows knoweldge (and some dos) i was happily playing around within hours, didnt even need to look up a help file. Only thing that really confused me was the file structure and where it kept stuff. But i had that sussed within an hour.

Personally i like having both, best of both worlds. I use WinXP for ease of use and great game support, while linux for war games and other net based activities.

Post 57

Male - some of us *have* tried it - for day to day stuff, I'm very happy with winXP.

Linux is my server platform of choice, but I'm more than satisfied with Windows on my desktop.

Post 58

i kinda like the ability to be able to function in BOTH environments and not limit myself to one or the other. but gee, that makes a little too much sense i think.

Post 59

Jeez, you lot.

The word Palladium comes from an ancient Greek legend of a statue that stood in the city of Troy holding a shield and a spear. It was believed to have been hurled from Olympus by the god Zeus at the founding of the city, and it was thought that this statue protected the city. In the tenth year of the Trojan War the Greek heroes Diomedes and Odysseus stole the Palladium, thus facilitating the fall of Troy.

There you have it :)

Now, with regard to MS bashing. Hell yeah, I'll bash MS until I'm blue in the face. Fact is, they're an extremely successful corporation, mostly through being thuggish, monopolistic, expansionist, and trying to assimilate every company, technology, and person who gets in their way. They're scumbags, but that's how you make lots of money.

Notice how the OS wasn't mentioned at all there? Windows 2000 and XP are both very stable and pretty damn hard to crash, and others have said, you need to have things wrong with your hardware to get blue screens in them. They're fairly good operating systems, and for the average home user, I recommend Windows. Easy to use, no buggering about for hours trying to get hardware working, and games run pretty well on it.

However, for servers, I recommend Linux all the way. Better server performance, lower cost, better power. And for power users, at least TRY Linux. You might be pleasantly suprised. It can have a harsh learning curve, though - especially if your hardware is unsupported.

Darkwolf.

Post 60

Some of the newer Linux distros are aimed at the less technology savvy user (eg. Lycoris and Xandros), and from what I gather they've improved the ease of use significantly.

You also have newer GUIs that are intended solely for the home user, take a look at OEone for example. Obviously designed for home users (I wouldn't use it as it isn't as flexible, but it would be perfect for someone who just reads email and does simple things like that).

Linux has versatility, and it won't be long before ease-of-use surpasses Windows. The many distros focus on different things, so a different Linux version is good for a specific task and it can cover all of them.

It can be made as right tool and it can be changed to suit another purpose.

And anyway, Windows is just so.. limiting.

Post 61

Tell me the day that usability and ease of use passes windows and I'll give it a go k? ^_^

Post 62

Ok i read all of that and assumed a point of view.

For now, im happy with Windows. Mainly because it came as a w***z, same with office, yadayada basically every program except Half-life (needed original CD key for here). The fact is however, that i cannot afford most of these programs, and as long as there is an underground, ill use it. With Palladium however, this isnt possible, and this will initiate my change to other options for this reason and others.

On my computer, i play games, surf the web, as well as write essays, music and compose images. Hypothetically, who owns this data with palladium? Me or Microsoft? I am using their systems with their code and authorisation, there is a genuine chance you wont own your own data.

Total cost of my computer, when new May 2000: $2500, add my upgrade last Nov-'01 of 500.
Now, legitimate essential software (for me): Windows2kPro, Office2k, Fruityloops,Photoshop, (add games). This in itself is worth up to 1500.
Now, linuxOS, Linux-word processor - Free. I like-it.

If Palladium becomes mainstream as they're predicting, heres what im doing:
Buy lots of stocks in microsoft, because if this gets off the ground, it wont stop. Then immigrate away from computers to become a recluse in the himalyan mountains, occastionaly going to town to buy food with the dividends of microsoft. Bliss.

How can Microsoft force individuals, corporate company’s and government organisations to upgrade to this new technology when the software they will be upgrading to wont be secure, some how I don’t think the Governments would like that. If you think about it, Microsoft would be able to view documents of banks, law firms, Government Documents as well as military information..

Speaking of which was watching the 7:30 report and listing to how crap Australia’s Military is even though our Soldiers are Some of the Best and how it is fundamentally imposable for us to make a contribution to the attack on Iraq without putting the lives of Australian Soldiers in danger by the use of obsolete equipment and tactics.
And all this was stated by a resigned SAS/Commando Commander.
Was funny watching the new Defence minister think and choose what to say without saying to much, looks like some ones got him on a leash already..

Well duh, most of our stuff is second hand :P

Might I also point out that most of Iraq's equipment is ALSO second-hand. Hell, so is Israel's, and so is Iran's, and so is most of the world's :)

Yes, our equipment could be more up to date (the F-111 Raven is freakin' ancient, ffs), but it's still ok.

The main thing I've got a problem with is bloody John Howard constantly sucking up to the US, and even worse, agreeing to back the US 100% in any action it does (how do you think Germany got into WW1? By making the same promise to Austria), even if those actions just happen to go against the wishes of the UN.

I may have my timeline a little out of kilter - but isn't the Steyr Aug a little newer than the colt M4?

Isn't warfare normally dangerous?

Back on topic, have you heard about some of the strategies they're using to sneak Palladium in?

Thats why it ran at Evo without a hitch. The only perceived problem was an inability to connect to a server, which was because I was running an older version of HL/CS. Updated and I had no problems.

LAN 1 - my machine didn't have the grunt to play anything you guys were playing (was on a 233MHz K6, no 3d card)
LAN 2 - WineHQ build of Wine was refusing to work, got myself a copy of Winex, simply installed the RPM and it ran like a dream.

Blue screens are also caused by hardware conflicts such as sound card & burners in win98's archaic DMA, IRQ's and all that stuff.

Not really a badly maintained machine, more a shit operating system.

Aravi...you mentioned on the first page that everyone has a right to choose...so how about you give up on bagging windows and leave us be? As it's been stated, how often do windows users bag out linux? Get over it, you use what you want to, and we'll do the same. That doesn't make anyone better, or wrong, because of personal preferance.

And that's my say for the day.
