i had a volcano 7 i likes the temps than me and dazza changed the fan to some quiet one and my cpu temps are too high for my liking but the fan is quiet
so yeha i want a quiet but cool hs/fan combination for xmas :D

Yeah I've got that heatsink on my machine, and the quiet version too. It's literally silent so the only sound on my case is the PSU.
HHC-L61
Idles at 45 degrees and maxes out at 50 degrees. Pretty damn good considering it's using a super quiet fan at low speed on an XP.
If you're wondering if those heatpipes make a difference. On max load the heatpipes on mine get close to being too hot to touch.

best CPU for those temps? either a Celeron 600-800 or wait for the next generation AMD and Intel processors :P

ohh, your talking cpu cooling :roll: if you want a heatsink to run cool, you need something to pull the heat away from the cpu. If your using air, you'll need lots of it. Lots of airflow = noise, so to be honest, if you want quiet, you'll need a processor that won't generate much heat, or you'll need to learn how to watercool with an active refrigeration block (ie. peltiers).

If you want a cool CPU go get a Tualatin Celeron 1.2 or 1.3 GHz. The 1.2 is only $90 in retail stores and you get a great little efficient HS+F and a cool little sticker :)
If you wanted to give everyone elses comp a run for their money yet still be ultra cool then you could fork out more money and get a P3 Tualatin 1.4 with 512K of L2 cache. Thats what im doing, not sure if im gonna stay on SD RAM for long with it though :)

DDR only takes effect on a P3 when in SMP.

The Zalman flower HS's work by dragging the heat up the thin fins and the heat is dispersed by the case fan airflow passing throguh them. You can also have the 120 mm fan that comes with it blowing over the HS

I'm looking at this one, it weighs less, much less, but still works well (and quiet 8) ). The copper base is obviously rectangle and is positioned the same way the Barton and Thoroughbred are. If the Athlon core is only small then why would you want to have the whole HS made of copper?

I currently have a Volcan7, I've been told it weighs 520g, but I have never personally weighed it myself. Tt don't tell you it's weight which is really really stupid :shock:
That above Zalman is only 270g and bloody quiet even on "normal" fan speed :P
AMD recommends a maximum of 300 grams :!:

knight heat sinks dont make noise, fans do. you can put pretty much any fan on the slk800 (supports 60mm 70mm and 80mm) u could get a low noise sunon and chuck it on it and it would be sweet.

Remember heat sink does most of the work.. you dont need a 8000rpm fan.. PERIOD!!
Wortel has that HHC-L61 and its pretty dodgy. Last lan his comp was crashing cause his cpu was over heating
while my volcano 7+ was fine :) (i have an slk800 now they rape all heat sinks:P)

i just looked up the Thermalright SLK-800 Heatsink
it looks wiced and yes it woudl work really well with the sutron 80mm fans i would think but i looked donw at the price and i am nelly in a coma

the thermaltake volcano 9 isn't bad, but I swear by thermalright - I have an sk6 on mine with a 60mm Delta fan, and I have an slk800 on Lilu's machine with a thermaltake 80mm smartfan on it. Both are noisy as hell, but they keep the temperature waaay down.

yeah see thats no good for me cause i have my computer on all day and night and its like 2 meters away from me when i sleep so a fan going to 500rpm and sounding liek a light aircraft aint very good for me

a shim will not stop u form crushing ure core if you drop it on the cpu
The slk800 comes with its own pads as the base of the heat sink runs along the center of the core :)so you need pads not freaking shims..

A shim is only a few micros less than the height of the CPU and is solid. The pads on the CPU are soft and squishy.

DansData has the best hsf comparo on the web. I don't trust THG anymore and won't go near HardOCP either (whether anything naughty happened or not).
My Tbird hit 70 the other day.. not so bothered by heat anymore though. If it's not crashing I don't really give a toss. I cranked my fans up though (were only running 7v :/) and now sitting in 12v my Tbird hit max 65 and case temp max 38. That's full load running OGR. Stupid AMD retail coolers :P

My Athlon doesn't have problems with heat, just everything else in my case near the CPU does. :shock: I have registered DDR and that cooks already so the Athlon doesn't help it out at all.
The Voodoo5 doesn't seem to be bothered by the heat and there is little to no air flow in my case. It locked up the other day (first time in months, with the exception of CS) I'm surprised it's as stable as it is with my current non-existent airflow, but I won't have to worry about that in about two to three weeks. :twisted:

My dad bought a few anodised blue shims when he got his Tbird and he only used it once then tossed it in the draw never to be seen again. I think most heatsinks now come with decent mounting clips.. some even use the mounting holes around the cpu socket... you'd have to be pretty unlucky to crush your core.

i know someone who chipped/cracked the core of their athlon by just hitting their case, now if it can happen that way, whats stopping it from happening in transit? Even packing the case in really well and driving like radeonwhore wont completely prevent it from happening

Still more pimping for the heatpipe Coolermaster HSF. It has the best clip and thumb handles for it I have ever used or seen. Pressure is just right too.

once the SLK800 is on, short of it ripping the CPU mount free of the board or it snapping all the hooks on one side of it, its not coming loose - Dragar will agree with me since he got to clip it onto Lilu's machine once or twice already :P
I'm waiting to see if Thermalright makes a heatsink with heat pipes on it - methinks it'll be a very sweet little setup.

OK my HHC-001 cost me $85 from Bits and Bytes. I'd like to say that it is quite a nice hsf. With this epox board and my cpu @ default clocks 1800+. I get about 45-50 on idle which isn't bad in my hot room.
The base of the HSF is not totally flat which I am concerned about I may lap in when i can be bothered. I can run stable @ 1701 mhz @ 1.9v in my hot room. This hsf is good but i the SLK-800 shits on it.
I do believe that the V7+ was 1 degree coolers in some tests I have seen. That THG test is total crap even if it does say my HSF is the best.
There is no way I am going to buy a SLK-800 it just isn't worth it because to overclock the extra 100 mhz my cpu needs 2.1v and that sends the temp soaring for that i will need water cooling.
