The Death of no1 server

What has happend to the number 1 cs server that for years I have played in and enjoyed talking to all the octa friends that i have made. Since the introduction of the registerd server it has slowly lost its players and sits empty day after day. What happened to the full of life server that was full all day and everyday. I miss the old ways and put it to all the old octa gang that the server should be returned to its old state. Please help to me to return the sever to it original ways and post you feelings and ideas to.

It has been a registered server for a while, but it is dying a quick death, whether this is releated to the move to ozforces or the release of other games such as NS, or due to the fact that half the time the stats arnt working. I'm not sure if OD is looking after this server or one of the other techs at ozforces. But alot of the servers that we once had r going to the dogs, ie dickheads on the broken server. These r just some thoughts for the day.

we were told that it was only being physically moved and thats it. but....there is no GU anymore ;(

i want it back at octa4, if they would ever sort out their link.

Looks like people are more interested in playing NS with a 1000 ping :shock:

This is also another proplem, the broken server which i have resorted to using since no one plays in no1 server. Not a day go's by where on the broken sever i am abused or called a cheat. I dont cheat and just because I have played cs for years and are quite good at the game I should not have to put up with this behaviour. Also there seems to be a lot of cheating on that server and while it is sometime fun to put your skills up against a newbie hack that is wall hacking with a awp halfway across that map it can sometimes be disheartning that this can happen in a server that use to be good fun! :cry:

Well I stopped playing CS.. so that's one less person.. okay I played CS for a bit but I got addicted to NS.. so mostly say 95% NS.

IMO I think the death happened when the servers moved. I'm in no way saying they were better off in Darwin.. I'm not saying OD is a bad bloke at all.. what I am saying is that playing on the servers when they were in Darwin, you got a feeling.. and now there's no feeling. Now it's like 'Oh I'm playing on a server like any other' for eg. Tosstra, slOptus, etc. It's lost the 'OMFG OMFG OMFG THEY HAVE INTERWEB IN DARWIN?!?!!?!' aspect... lol.. like umm yeah.. hehe..

I mean fair enough.. people move.. the GU community is becoming more and more national by the day.. (or the week or sumfin).. which is cool... so anyway.

Apparently the word is that the stats for server 1 are being fixed/rebooted/whatever :D just after the new year. Also I tend to agree that NS may be having an effect in that its a new mod that shows a lot of potential.

Hopefully if the stats get fixed then all (and there are still a lot out there) the registered players may start playing on server 1 again. Of course thats not saying that all registered players are stats whores :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Fingers crossed anyway .... and yeah it is fun to play on the broken server occasionally but one does tire of all the "Noobs" who can only play well by using hacks and the like 8) and who dont hesitate to yell "CHEATER" at the first sign of a "legal" and good player coming onto the server.

Well, i have noticed this too.

Before, i could jump into the GU1 server and find players at almost any time. now theres hardly anyone in there>?

I attribute this to the server move. I personally feel that there is no longer a GU community.

...well, no GU community in regards to CS anyway.

kinda sad really, all things considered cs isn't exactly the best game ever, it's addictive but what made it really good was the fact that the octa4/gu community was there. since the move and a few other things i won't get into.... a lot of well respected / elders of cs (no offence intended, merely the way i see it ;)) stopped playing the game... it has just died.

I dont really play ns, quite frankly i dont really play cs.

I am however just getting back into it now..

However i still play on internode as i enjoy best pings and also does not cost me anything (download limit)

One of the reasons i played cs which isn't that great a game was because of the feeling that i was playing on a local server that had people on it i new. Altough i will still play it if theres people on server 1 but its just doesn't seem as fun :(

If the server stayed where it was it would be totally dead as it had become unplayable due to very bad lag that didnt matter what ping you had. When od left to go live in Canberra he didnt intend to move the server he did it in the end because it was so bad as to be unplayable as once he left there seemed to be no real care factor on the part of octa4 to fix it. He in fact did his best to try to ensure we had a place where we could all keep playing. To blame the move for the server dying is not in my opinion correct at all but it is an easy thing to blame. The introduction of NS has currently reduced my cs time down to almost nil but this will change as NS is so new and I find I can comfortably play both but there are many many others who are now also playing NS. I belive that perhaps if we all, while playing on other servers where say [GU] on the end of our names and bind the address for gamers underground so we can periodically bring it up during games and have periodical server invasions to other servers to try to attract other players to our server so that we can get back to growing the great community that GU is. I am sure other people have ideas so how about trying to be positive and make some suggestions instead of pointing fingers as that is not going to help much at all.
I will say it again as some people seem to forget how bad the servers had become if it had stayed at Octa4 we would be much worse off and nothing seemed to be happening to rectify this at all.
One of the biggest problems and reasons I feel is responsible was the introduction of the registration set up which we only did because the cheating was so bad and the maturity level so low on other servers it was decided something had to be done so it was introduced. This unfortunately also cut off alot of the suplly of new players and I guess we are feeling the effects of that now more than ever but I believe there are now open slots available on the server so we other people can now ge in so it would be an oppourtune time to start building the player base back up to replace those that we have lost.
This community wouldn't exist at all if it wasnt for OD, off his own back, setting up the servers and organising the set up of the forums and webpage and I seem to remeber a time when his efforts where appreciated but I for one am saying now Thank you for your effort OD and we will try our best to keep the cs community up and running so we can play on an enjoyable server whenever we please, so can we have some positive suggestions about how we can do this as none of us want to lose our unique identity. btw I dont feel the forum community is in any sort of danger at all only the cs one.
And seqo_ae I believe that Sly is one of the many NS converts and no longer has any interest in playing CS I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong but that is what I have been lead to believe.
And in regard to the broken server there is now a very active admin called array playing on there and he has no hesitation in kicking dickheads so you will find the situation will improve as they get weeded out.

The point is the broken server is open public. Not restricted to the GU community only as it used to be and as the GU1 requires.

I wouldn't attribute the server going down due to the move at all. No that was probably the best thing for the server. However just a coincidence that Natural-Selection came out at around the same time and the players of many years of Counter-Strike found something else to meet their desires.

I believe the influx of absolute tools in the broken server is due to our loss of adminship rights to this server.. Well i know i have lost mine not sure about the rest of you though..

But remember half of the players that used to play on it were O4 dialup customers with a ping of 160-200 vs cablers with pings of 80 and dsl'ers at ping 120. Was nice and fair ping wise.

Nowadays even with a Ozforces account you are lucky to get a sub 280 ping and now the cablers have a 20-40 ping, it's too much of a difference.

But hey if you are a 56k'er still the Ozforces dialup only servers are great, a few fakelaggers sometimes but nothing major :)

I haven't played in server1 for months (except for running around in an empty server :roll: ), every time I go in there it's dead.

ok yeah well me have been playing the dial up servers becuase got a ping for 300 or so, sop yeah but i do go on the broken server and it's alright but i NEVER know people on there the only person i've known on there was unseen and i been waiting to play on the GU server but no one there so i just play dial up again. PS i dont like ns it is to confusing for my brain.

Never was I trying to say a bad word about OD or anything at all.. it was all about the feeling damnit.. heh.. I know OzForces rock.. I'd much rather play with 200ms ping than 400ms.. :) I haven't actually played on the GU servers in a while so I don't know what half you are talking about regarding all the tools and what not.

Agree with HS on this one.

If Octa4 pulled their heads outa there arses and took a look around at what they had, and pissed away, then the problem wouldnt be there. I apoligise to the techs at Octa4 who have no real input and are unable to rectify this. But it was obvious as the nose on your face that the heirachy were not interseted in maintaining the servers, providing support and components to run them, or even supply actual machines. As usual all they were interested in was shafting businesses and corporate companies for internet solutions.

As for the managers and decision makers, ya couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery.

As was said before, the move was done to ensure the survival of the GU Server, and it has survived. It may take a little recruitment drive to now coax the players back.

As for the cheats and dickheads on the Broken server, I shall get on, analyse and incinerate a few of them if they are cheating.

From my tone youve probaly realized Im a littly shitty with local business, Well your right and I have a bloody good reason to be as well.

OK - with any server move, there will be a transition period. Problem is is that NS was then released, and a lot of the hardcore "play every day" regulars now mostly play NS and not CS. That is your primary reason for the low numbers. Simple. Oh, and the move to OzForces must be the reason because now the majority get better pings. What a hassle...

The second reason is number of admins for GU #1 (I'll deal with Broken later as that is a seperate issue). That is a valid point that I just haven't had the time to address, but will be rectifying now. ( http://www.gamers-underground.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7696 )

Well I'll be playing Tuesday around ~6PM+ (and have a break for midnight) then resume as normal. I know that you will all rush to come play with me and not all of you can fit in the server at once, but I will understand if I don't see some of you there. :)

It went off for about 2 1/2 hours tonight :D Seemed that all read the post and had a look to see if anyone was playing.....and there was so more joined and then more...until it was like before...how i have missed the GU server :D

was very good tonight but the ping was litlle over top BAD

mmm Okay appears I may have had a bad hair day. I just need to stress to the techs and support staff at Octa4 that you do a bloody marvellous job with what resources you have.

OD, Meph, Hit and the rest of the guys that were are or still involved with Octa4 are, have and did and still do a good job. They are gamers and understand what we needed but unfortunatly those above did not believe them.
