Ok People, lets get over the fact its an apple product here. I have Word:MacX on my computer - its a microsoft product, I don't complain! MUCH!

Even if you have a mac, I reckon get the Windows based one, because OS X supports PC Hard drives :wink:

Most Apple products own, unfortunately people dont realise how good they are. eg: people think their computers suck because their "slow".
Only problems i have with Apple is their stuff is pretty expensive and their computers arent compatible with all the games that come out (with exception of Blizzard games :))
I have to agree. Most Mac products are pretty expensive. But one thing that Apple have always done, is gone out of their way to help education based people. If you buy a mac product of software under education, you will get a fair discount - if you buy hardware (ie computer) you get three years warranty...
only usb standard in use are 1.1 and 2.0 usb 2.0 is about 25% faster than firewire. Most scanners skip firewire and went to usb2.0 for the home market cause there was very little support for firewire in PCs. that is why most graphic studios use macs handy for already aquired high end scanners and digital video cameras.
Apparently there's some problems with terminology of USB2.0 Can't remember the exact terms but there's things like 'full speed' and 'high speed' where full speed is actually slower than high speed. But these things apparently are going to be changed soon.
I'm a DV editor, and firewire kicks arse, I could go all techie, cos I had to do a major study up on firewire for my TV course, and USB 2, is at the moment about the same, but firewire is underging improvments, please stand by...
Don't worry about that.. USB 3.. coming soon to a PC near you :) Well.. one day.. heh.. don't forget USB 1.1 was only 12 Mb/s. The confusion I believe is that devices can be USB 2.0 compatible but only run at USB 1.1 max.. which is just silly. They are technically compatible with USB 2 but won't run at Hi-Speed or whatever it is.. it's just manufacturers way of talking up their products.
Firewire is a lot more popular in Japan, etc. iirc because the all the PCs came out with Firewire ports and so all the Camcorders and stuff followed suit.. unlike here where we get very little Firewire products in comparison.. even though they're more or less the same model they just have a different interface.

Firstly: FireWire is beautiful, and it's nice to see USB and FW going for each other's throats. But the reason FW will win in areas like DV is that FW has the ability to operate without a hub device: ie, you don't need a PC to intermediate a FireWire network. Gee, I wonder why Intel support USB?
Secondly, the old "Macs are expensive" line. Get thee to the laptops, where you will find that Macs are cost and feature competitive with any PC. Stack up all the standard features on a freaking iBook for the price and it still comes up as a winner against Dells, Gateways, Toshibas, IBMs, you name it. I should know because I've done the sums before.
And OS X ... OS X is the operating system used in Heaven, I swear. I was never a big fan of OS 7, 7.5, 8 or 9. But X is beautiful. Gorgeous. Beauty and Beast in the one awesome package.
...not to mention OS X is an utter wet-dream to use...
it is an amazing piece of software...

USB 3 will be yet a while away compared to Firewire 2 coming out in the not-too-distant future - mid 2003 if not Earlier. seeing as USB 2.0 has pretty much only been out for a few months on the consumer market (at the most) and firewire was out for... what? a year beforehand we can expect the next large leap in firewire technology to hit very soon.
Granted USB will always have it's uses (mice - keyboards - peripherals of a computer) and is very good but i have the belief that firewire is still and will always be better for DV editing and the like.
Currently mulling over the iPod or the Creative Jukebox 3... Arghh choices.

Oh and USB2.0 owns Firewire IEEE 1394 no matter what usage. The new Firewire is somthing to look out for tho..IEEE 1394b, 3.2Gbps. But like the original firewire, expense is gonna limit it yet again.

You can use your iPod to store any file. And if you have a Mac, you can use an iPod to boot it, as an external hdd.
No, I'm deadly serious. A lot of tech shops have been buying 5Gb iPods to use as emergency boot kits.
Or you can boot your Mac in FW mode, where it acts as a FW hdd, and copy files off it without booting the OS (which saved my own bacon once).

That is definately sweet.. though the new motherbaords that support USB booting are pretty cool too.

i don't think Firewire 2 will be 3.2gbps - that is too high a figure. as i said in my previous post - 800mbps is the proposed and expected figure at this point in time.

expense? where? firewire is incorporated into current soundards, add-on cards - it's even on the PS2. i don't see the expense. I even have it on my old Fortissimo sound card - cost me 120$ 2 years ago...
Read my original post about firewire and USB2.0's weird 'lowest possible speed' problem. maybe it will be fixed in other versions but a generalisation of USB2 owns firewire is flat out false.
iPod is expensive minorci go to teh apple website and it should have prices. friend of mine paid "000 for his a little way back... 10gb model.
I am not a big fan of the iBook, its the only mac to still have a G3 in it, but what a fast G3 - 800 Mhz... Anyway, a Powerbook G4 1ghz with DVD burner - that is just awesome for a laptop - and its a powerbook, we all know how cool they are... http://www.apple.com/powerbook :)
