whenever my girlfriend travels back to Hong Kong (every 6 months or so) she gets lessons from a Kung Fu master (friend of her grandfather) on how to defend herself etc
some of the photos of him (75 years of age) going all out on his younger followers are just incredible.
oh and if you can get stuff on Kendo (japanese bamboo sword fighting) it's excellent and very fun (the girls that do it are scary because they scream, as loud as they can, at you... :))

kendo. heh, i was in japan last year with my school for a short exchange and one of my friends' billets did kendo :D. she was tiny, quiet and didn't speak a word of english, but she did take him to a lesson after school. only afterwards did we hear about the beast within.... he quickly learned when she was going for a head strike
lol @ 75 yo kung fu master

not being racist or anything...
but if you see an asian person doing kung fu and stuff and if you see a person of another ethnic origin doing kung fu, who do you think looks more intimidating? for me personally, its the asians. commercial mainstream media must have corrupted my mind...

As it was pointed out to me last ULC lan, cant remember his name, but basically he had heaps and heaps of clips from UFC and Shooto - japan fighting championships etc etc... Any of the 'kung fu'... tae kwon do .. etc was totally obliterated by the hard hitters.

if a guy who's 6 ft 4" piledrives you, of course you're going to go down. martial arts doesn't teach you to become invincible, unbeatable etc. it's a form of fighting just like boxing. practitioners learn to defend themselves not only through striking certain points and using weight advantages, they also become fit, flexible and learn to scrap using certain weapons. this doesn't make them invulnerable, it only improves their chances of winning if they need it. of course if the guy you're fighting is bigger than you and knows what he's doing, you're fucked either way.

My old si hing once told me that the loser in most fights is the one who makes the most mistakes.
ie: Don't get yourself in a place where they can piledrive you!

I would call boxing a subset of the martial arts. I mean I've boxed and studied jun fan/JKD/kali/win chun/whatever else si hing taught that month.

It really comes down to skill. Sheer strength only matters in certain actions, and most of that is "how hard can you punch him?". Almost everything else comes down to skill.
I mean I'm 6'4", I know a bit about fighting and I seem to have kept some of the instinct for when to use what move, but I when I was training I was regularly drilled by little bastards who could move faster, or who would take the fight to the floor and grapple better, or who could use trapping etc etc. In those situations my superior boxing - both technique and strength - were useless.
And muay thai is more of an equaliser than you might think. Thai Roundkicks hurt.
Post 21
i thought that although in many disciplines strength, fitness etc is all important, but the fluidness and flow of your moves and your skill are just as important i.e. you dont necessarily have to be stronger than your opponent?
Post 22
strength determines not only the amount of hurt you can dish out, but the amount of punishment you can take. a stronger person will hurt you far more with any single punch than you can hurt them. skill determines the way you fight, sizing up the opposition, taking advantage of whatever opportunities are given. for example the smaller, faster fighters only beat you because they could pick your weaknesses and maximise their strengths. this is in itself a skill, but a bigger opponent who knows what they're doing will win everytime. why? a big man (ie 6"4' weighing around 85-90kgs little to no fat, just for this example) only needs to land one half-decent punch. it's all downhill from there, because if you lose focus you're finished. a smaller fighter will not only have to avoid the punches religiously, they will also have to land more hits to bring someone down.

The "skillful big guy" hypothetical gets a lot of airplay, but it's never that simple. Sure, I could knock smaller guys flat with a right cross or right uppercut, but smaller guys tend to be better at stuff like punching me in the nuts, or taking me to the floor in a painful manner (esp as I have a higher centre of gravity), and then choking me.
I mean being strong is one thing, but the strongest man will pass out if put in the right sleeper hold. It's a very disconcerting feeling, losing strength in your legs, watching the world go gray, getting tunnel vision. After that I'm not sure how it goes, because I tapped out :)

seems you were on the losing end in the schoolyard :P. how bout i fight you, and being smaller than you i will "lose" and then we'll call it even. you can win the brawl, i'll win the argument...;)
Post 25
Heh, the stronger and bigger man will always win? Take a look back at Bruce Lee. He could kick everyones ass, regardless of their size! :P
Speed would also have alot to do with a fight. Most of the power from a kick/punch/headbut/etc comes from speed.

I haven't lost a brawl yet, schoolyard or not. Being as big and as ugly as I am, I've not really been in that many brawls.
I have, however, had my arse handed to me in training by my sifu and by little flexible guys who simply 0wnzd me while grappling.

what about your inner-chi!? :P

Bugger that, kick them in the crotch, Martial Arts or not, land one there and U win hehehehe

and be shamed for the rest of ur days, martial arts aside though, i wouldnt want to fight sumone thats 6'4 (me being about 5'10) purely cause of the fact they got a longer reach then me, if they are totally unco i might be okay, but if they have half a clue id be proper fucked. sure i can get in close, but if they can keep me out i got no chance.

exactly
Post 31
Size is not overly important. I do wing chun and the only thing the size of an opponent would change is your strategy to nail them. They have a longer reach? Again all it would do is change your tactics ( i wont go into specifics). El Prez you studied 4 forms of martial arts in a month?
Post 32
Seriously tho, almost every fight someones tried to start with me, I've just said look mate I'm not going to fight you and walk off. It works surprisingly well, no idea why but it does :D

I trained at the Man Ho Martial Arts Academy, still operating in coconut grove. Despite the tacky name, it was a good school.
The sifu there is of the Jeet Kun Do pursuasion, so he teaches a very wide range of material. You get stuff from win chun, muay thai, boxing, savate, shooto wrestling and brazillian jiu jitsu, filipino stick fighting and traditional chinese weapons.
I mean I was a lazy student and I never progressed past yellow sash, but the guys on red sash know a whole bunch of stuff about just about any situation. They train to fight with anything.
It's a good school for the breadth and depth of the sifu, and the excellent range of top-flight seminars with famous martial artists he pulls in from overseas, but he's very disorganised. It's difficult to advance in the academy because he's so disorganised about gradings.
