This is just twisted... and in my opinion is an awful design.

although i must admit that it wouldn't be too terrible to work it out, it is just that there are enough problems with people not knowing how to work out a normal roundabout let alone one big one and five little ones....

Post 2

WOW........... how confusing???? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

Post 3

Hmm round abouts arent too complicated if you just think about where you want to go and to make sure your in the right lane.

It looks like it would work but for some odd feeling I think it'll be an area prone to accidents more than anything. I can picture maniacs going through them at insane speeds and with a bit of traffice weaving in and out :?

Post 4

Why?

What is the need in a roundabout like that?

There really are some strange people in this world...most of which design road l;ayouts and stuff!

Post 5

People whould have no chance, there are still morrons who cant use the two lane roundabouts....

Post 6

ewww roundabouts. oh i well guess it must serve a perpose however ugly it is. apparently theres roundabuots some places where people get stuck on them for up to an hour now that would suck.

heh nice sig dr_uges, calvin and hobbes is the shizz!

Post 7

did any of you read that article?? cause they were saying that they have only had 73 accidents in 25 years. now this could mean that they are better/more responsible drivers, or that it really isn't as hard to use as it looks ;)

Post 8

73 accidents is not something to brag about. especially at ONE section of road... in fact, coming from the son of a cop and an insurance claims officer, that is bloody terrible.

Post 9

Let me see 73 in 25 years, one every 4 months. Thats accidents. Thats nothing.

I bet there are some similar sets of roads in Darwin with pretty poor accident records. I remember seeing quite a few on the Esplanade. Mst involved pedestrians/cyclists too.

ANy the reason why it is so big is that there are 5-6 entry/exit points. The multiple minor roundabouts mean that more vehicles can be on the intersection at a time, stopping the back log that would normally occur.

Its actually probably very logical.

Post 10

all i can say is: lol.

you are talking about 14 SERIOUS accidents (which involve loss of life or debilitating injuries) in 25 years. that, by anybodies standards (obviously you don't keep track of things...), is bad.

not to mention the minor accidents....

and no, there is nowhere in Darwin quite that bad.

Post 11

Look at the volume of traffic. Serious does not mean death or dehabilitation. A 6 car pile up is a serious accident and no-one may get hurt in one of those.

And I do know of roads in Melbourne that would have similar accident rates. I keep on forgetting from my time in Darwin, that there is no real traffic up there.

Post 12

the words "Serious Accident" have a definition which i just stated - don't believe me? do a search. a six car pile up may be a serious accident for the media - it is not a 'serious' accident for the parties that really matter ie the police, insurance firms, victims, courts etc.

we are also talking about a relative town (157000 people, bigger than darwin but comparing to Sydney or Melbourne's traffic intense roads... it is nothing) so the traffic flow would be quite minimal.

Post 13

We differ on the interpretation of serious here. You may be using what you consider serious, but I feel what the author means is not what you take it at?

Have you worked the reason out for the serious accidents yet? Involving pedestrains?

I would say that they come from the football stadium in the background, the home of Swindown Town? Drunk, happy/sad football fans sprawling out, I know how many near misses i have seen outside colonial and the MCG and they are relatively well designed.

And of course Swindon is really isolated too, just like Darwin, not!!. I just pulled my UK Road Atlas and its on the main road between Bristol/Cardiff and London? And for those that dont know, London has the population the equivalent of Australia.

maybe i should email them to see what they mean by serious?

check to see whether there are any freeways of any sort bypassing swindon... as most likely there will be. cannot fathom why that kind of main road is so small... (ie 2 lane, there is one three lane road but that opens to all the other 2 lane roads)

Blatantly wrong... but nevertheless.

EDIT: Email sent for Clarification.

Post 15

You are right London may be down a couple of million. It only has 12 million people in it. May I bend and kiss your smelly socks so firmly planted in your own little far away righteous world.

And the M4 is in the vicinity because if you read the street sign you would notice it quite clearly at the top.

Post 16

 oh i would like that very much dear ignorant sir.

don't let this turn into a flame war dude. personal jibes aren't necessary.

yes i realised that, however i would've like to have known whether it was a leading road ONTO the M4, whether the M4 actually bypassed Swindon or what the exact situation was. Seeing as you had your trusty roadmap out it would have been good to know, hey?

if you don't feel like debating this further, flame me via PM if you so wish. or respond reasonably with something that might be considered worthwhile to share with the rest of us.

Post 17

The M4 passes south of Swindon but the A348/419 pass through and that is the main route for Southampton/Portsmoiuth region people to get to Birmingham.

And I am still awaiting your resposne regarding the football stadium hosting the famous Sinwdon Town Football Club who made the League Cup final in 1966 (well late 60s if my memory is served correctly).

Thats probably all your 14 seriouos but really not that serious accidents.

PS I had already sent an email when the serious thing came up. See if they respond.

Post 18

i'm not sure i fully understand your scenario.

i also asked in the email if they had details on each of the accidents and whether they were available via an internet website or whether they could just tell me. if it proves that the serious accidents are not so serious afterall then i will apologise to all.

if a pedestrian was killed or seriously injured (especially fourteen times) then it doesn't stop the fact that it is a hazard does it?

like i said at the beginning, it wouldn't be too hard to get used to but for anybody new to come onto that 'thing' they call magic they are just asking for an accident.

Post 19

Negative.

Brilliant designe, good implementation.

The major prob with roundabouts are streaming traffice flows (ie, you end up with a continous line of traffice moving through the roundabout and no one else can break into it).

This design also overcomes this issue.

Bring em on in darwin i say!.

Post 21

I admit I was wrong,

they beat Arsenal in 1969, not 66. http://www.arsenal.com/sportsappcontroller.jsp?command=setSelectedId&nextPage=displayheadline&type=com.sportapps.news.NewsItem&id=3897277

I had a well crafted response and IE stuffed up, so you get this garbelled rubbish instead.

My main point with the stadium being there, is that the County Ground, home of Swindon Town would actually have brought many people into the area over the previous 25 years who otherwise would not havve been in the area. This along with drunk nitwits leaving the ground crossing in front of vehicles, as all pedestrians are liable to do, would show that this intersection has been reasonably well designed and though out.

As for the dangerous pices of road in Australia, I think that the Calder Highway between Gisborne and bendigo (especially in the Black Forest), Hume between Albury and Gundagai and Pacific Highway would matc this toll.

And for dangerous intersections, the roundabout surrounding 'le Arc de Triumph' in Paris is that poor, you car is not covered by insurance when driving around it. Something to do with traffic on the round about having to give ay to traffic entering. My mate watched it and kept him amused.

Post 22

roundabouts are great imho.

i just think this one isn't.

The Arc de Triumph (or however you spell it) in Paris is one of the world's roundabouts (could be the largest actually cant remember) but during peak hour it has been known that people can circulated (very slowly) in it for 3 hours

Post 24

Some small roundabouts actually are not very good. I read something in the RACV about it.

PS received this in the mail.

Dear Benjamin
Thank you for your email, and for using SwindonWeb.

As far as we know, no one has lost their life on the Magic Roundabout, but we can't be exactly sure about that. What we mean by 'serious' is a head-on crash or a car wrecking accident where a broken bone may have occurred, or the occupants were taken to hospital.

According to our notes from 1997 (when we wrote it), we researched it with the Wiltshire Police, but our contact there has since left.

I hope this helps.

And, can I ask. How did the argument get started?

Kind regards.

On the page regarding the Magic Roundabout, I was wondering as to what you meant by 'serious' accidents occurring on the roundabout or as a direct result of the roundabout. In police and insurance terms 'serious' means loss of life or debilitating injuries due to the accident. However, I was unsure whether this was the case or not in your story. If you could provide details of the accidents through any means (web address would be ideal) it would be much appreciated. If not, then I would appreciate it if you would clarify it for me.

P.S I found your website to be extremely interesting.

Noting that they will take you to hospital for concussion I regard that as a pretty good record.
